How do you pronounce the beginning syllables in "biographical picture"? Same way with the short form. I'm sure that you could hear someone using a different pronounciation somewhere, but seriously, which way seems more logical?
Well how do you pronounce Harass? Why do people insist on saying Hairessment?

Logical is not always the answer.

then again, try asking a brit how to pronounce "elevator"...
"lift"?

Pretty straightforward.

How about the thing that you stick your garden hose into on the outside of your house [not the gnome, the other end].
it's spelled spigot
but I've always pronounced it spicket.
And of course, the exact same thing on the inside of your house is now a 'faucet'.

Bio-pic makes more sense...but I've almost always heard reviewers, people in documentaries about the movies etc. pronounce it bi-opic.

That is my-op-ic and not myo-pic.

Guess you know how I voted

Except it's actually technically incorrect. O-maj is not an acceptable english pronunciation of homage. I thought for sure it was until the English nazi's at my office corrected me and pointed me to several websites... many of which referenced the self-important directors thinking they were cool by pronouncing it like the French.

And for the record I've never heard anyone pronounce it bio-pic. Bi-opic is the way to go.

I just need some clarification.

To the people who say that they have only heard it pronounced BI-OPIC

Are you saying and/or hearing: BI--AH-PIC or BI--OH-PIC ??

Bi-Ah-Pic. Good question that clears things up a tad bit more.

Except that it's short for "biographical picture," not "biography picture," and the word biographical has a long-O, just like the word biopic.

People can call it a "bi-ah-pic" all they like, but I'll take the word of Merriam Webster since, you know, it's kind of their business to know how to pronounce words correctly.

I think the problem stems from it being one word versus a hyphenated word. Bio-pic sounds like two words and doesn't flow as well as bi-ah-pic, which acutally sounds like one word.

According to the dictionary, it's bi-oh-pic. That said, it's so widely pronounced bi-ah-pic, I imagine it'll eventually be recognized as an alternate pronunciation. Just like how so many people added a syllable to preventive that we now recognize preventative as a legitimate pronunciation.

which brings up a good point:

try saying these words -

photography, photographer, photograph

notice something? just because words have the same roots, they don't necessarily sound the same!

I often hear it pronounced both ways, and thats 'often' without the 't' sound.
