Bi-op-ic or Bio-pic?
How do you pronounce it? How should it be pronounced?
|
Ummm....it's shorthand for "biographical picture." Thus, "bio-pic."
|
bio pic
the other way sounds like you need to see an optometrist |
Bi-op-ic sounds like some kind of eye disorder.
Edit: I guess I wasn't the only one that thought that. |
As others have already stated, bi-op-ic sounds like an eyesight problem.
|
I pronounce it Biop-ic

The correct pronunciation is bi-op-ic, only without any pauses between the syllables.

Don't believe everything you her people mispronounce. ;)

"Bi-op-ic" doesn't even make any sense. The word is a portmanteau of "biography/ical pictures", so you're combinining the 'bio' and the 'pic'. Granted, this isn't the case 100% of the time, but it is enough of the time to be able to determine the 'preferred' pronunciation.
|
Roger Ebert pronounced it bi-op-ic the last time I heard him say it.
|
I never realized that there would be confusion with the pronounciation of this word.
How do you pronounce the beginning syllables in "biographical picture"? Same way with the short form. I'm sure that you could hear someone using a different pronounciation somewhere, but seriously, which way seems more logical? |
What's "logical" doesn't always factor into what's "correct" when it comes to language. I have never in my life hear the word pronounced "bio-pic."
|
Every time I hear it refered to on The History Channel, etc. it is always bi-opic (I suppose that is the same as bi-op-ic in this thread). I have never heard it called a bio-pic.
But then, I hear hollywood directors call an homage and "O maj" which probably just makes them feel smart. Technically correct, but everyone still thinks you're an ass. :) |
Off topic, but is it sit-com or sigh-tee-comb?

would it be considered myopic to assume bio-pic is prefered to bi-op-ic?
|
I suppose the correct way to say it would be Bio-pic, but I've never heard anyone say it that way. I don't think I've ever used the word, though.
I'm going to choose Bi-op-ic, since that is how everyone I've ever heard pronounces it. |
The correct answer is bio-pic. Next question?
|
I've never heard bio-pic said, bi-op-ic on the other hand, yes.

i think the difference comes down to what you want to hear... to me, the difference between a syllable break between BY-OH-PICK and BY-OHP-ICK is so neglible when said fast that you can't really determine it.
then again, try asking a brit how to pronounce "elevator"... :D |
this thread is blowing my mind...I had no idea this was even a problem... it's clearly BIO-PIC and anyone else saying otherwise should be beaten.
