Those of you like me, who only have Marcus Theater chains, will not being seeing this:

My wife is going to be very upset.
"Unfortunately, as a result of the negotiations with Paramount reaching an impasse, Marcus Theatres will not be showing 'Sweeney Todd' at any of its locations," said Bruce Olson, president of Marcus Theatres, in a news release. "This decision was reluctantly reached because the price requested by Paramount to show the film in Marcus Theatres was too expensive in the opinion of our film buyers."
My wife is going to be very upset.

This is going to be alot like Brokeback Mountain in terms of the reception it gets in the media and awards circles--and possibly the public as well.
It has no shot to win its weekend--its big hope of being a success depends on becoming a gradual cultural/media sensation in the weeks and months *following* its release. It'll be driven by a cult audience that's been drooling over its exceptional artistic pedigree, but it also has particular ties into fangirl and gay commercial markets.
It'll be one of the best reviewed movies of the year, not to mention the holiday season, and it'll be nominated for more academy awards than any prior film by this director. Then, sadly, it'll lose everything due to the academy being too squeamish about its subject matter.
Those are my predictions in a nutshell: BBM round 2.

Especially if it's not playing on the Seventh largest theater chain in the country. Yeah, it's not that big of a chain, but 49 locations add up.

Big fan of the stage musical and thought the movie was great. Yeah, I miss some stuff (no chorus so no one says "God, that's good!' in the song "God, That's Good!"), but it's about as faithful as I could have realistically expected. For the record, I also liked Phantom, Rent, Hairspray, and Chicago.

I'm looking forward to this although I have to say, every time I see the trailer and Depp breaks into song, I think he sounds horrible and I've even heard people snickering in the theater.

And people snicker at everything in theatres now a days.

Johnny's voice works surprisingly well. It's a bit too "early David Bowie." With an unfortunate touch of Anthony Newley. But all in all a great acting-while-singing performance. HBC's vocals are much weaker and crappier--but she makes up for it with a very strong characterization and "reworking" of the Lovett character. And she does more with "Nothing's Gonna Harm You" than any stage Lovett has ever managed. She's less goofy, less of a doddering crone, and they're both less funny. Then again, Sweeney hasn't ever been a "monster movie" before, and it works damn well.

Really dumb question, but is there dialogue in this film or is it a straight musical from start to finish like "Evita"?

I didn't much care for "Sweeney Todd", the singing was average (Depp was out of his depth on the singing, especially when the kid outsung him quite easily), and the story wasn't all that interesting to me. Now, it does pick up steam in the 3rd act, but overall, not a film I'll revisit in the future.
I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

As someone who has enjoyed the various stage versions, including the original Broadway production, I was amazed at how well the movie captured the essence of the show. Sure, there have been some cuts, and the interpretations are not the ones that have been traditional - but the result is a breathtaking piece of filmmaking that does justice to Sondheim's masterpiece. I'm already looking forward to heading back for a second viewing.

as for the gore quotent - whoah! even though there's alot of grue, the blood looks like watered down tomato soup and less like total 'realistic' karo syrup film blood - that might have been a prob with the MPAA. Why is this a Dreamworks Warner Bros. collaboration and not a Dreamworks Paramount joint project? To bad the eventual HiDef release of this will be HD-DVD only.

Saw this tonight. I was already excited, as Sweeney Todd is one of my favorite musicals, and I love Burton and Depp. But this blew me away. This is a new Burton classic we have on our hands. He treated the material so respectfully, but without ever being slavish. The only problem I had was with Joanna, who looks like an alien that has made a poor attempt at imitating Christina Ricci.

Not familiar at all with the stage show, but I really liked the movie... The first few minutes I thought were a bit slow, and I was thinking this isn't going to end well, but then it got going and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I don't know what it is, but I find HBC strangely attractive.
