I'd pay to see a debate between creekdipper and art.

Crap, can we please stay on topic and not spin this thread into dvdtalker A vs. dvdtalker B?

At least that's her viewpoint.
Again, the movie is very meticulous about sticking to the story:

Spoiler:
Jack's wife is distant and cold to Ennis on the phone, but also remains cordial, and there is some evidence she may be putting two and two together finally when she realizes Brokeback was a real place the two men shared together.

What *I* think Ms. Proulx is saying about the ending is not "Yes, Jack was killed by homophobes." She's saying: Ennis' worst fears are not misplaced. His refusal to build a life together with Jack is a tragedy, but it's built on an accurate picture of the lay of the land.

(And no, any speculation that the Jack's wife "had a hand in her husband's death" didn't come from the author, in spite of what someone's friend might think they heard the author say.)

creekdipper, if you have seen the movie and want to comment on it, then do so while sticking to the actual movie. If you want to debate the merit of homosexuality in film or to debate the morality particular forms of sexual expression, then this is not the appropriate thread.

Well after saying I would not see it I did anyway. It was a good film. The crowd had a lot of variety. The crowd clapped at the end which seem strange with the way the film ends. I would give it 3 out of 4. The scenery was amazing. My wife found it funny that they did the dishes more than they had sex.

It made #8 this weekend which is fantastic considering it is still only playing in limited release.

'Brokeback' Wrangles Strong Numbers in Expansion
by Brandon Gray
December 18, 2005

In limited release, Brokeback Mountain saw another stampede of moviegoers in its second weekend, while there was no springtime for The Producers in its debut.

Focus Features' cowboy love story lassoed an estimated $2.4 million from 69 locations, averaging a potent $34,188 per site, raising the total to $3.3 million in 10 days.

Last weekend, Brokeback Mountain trumpeted a $109,485 average at five bustling theaters in Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco. It's natural for a picture's average to drop significantly as it adds smaller markets.

"The danger with distributing a movie like this is if you get ahead of it, you lose it," said Jack Foley, Focus' president of distribution. "We'll do what we have to do to meet the business capabilities and the demand. I'd love to see this movie in 2,000 theaters. I have no limits to how wide I want it to go."

Foley said that the expansion will be more aggressive than previously planned, with around 275 theaters set for Jan. 6 and about 400 for Jan. 13. The original intent was to be in 300 venues by the end of January.

MOUNTAIN HIGH: Brokeback Mountain's eighth-place finish in the weekend box-office tally betrays its accomplishments. The groundbreaking film took in $2.4 million across just 69 theaters, an average of $34,194 per screening — a record for a non-IMAX film with more than 50 playdates — and is the first film since 1995 to crack the box-office Top 10 while in fewer than 100 theaters. "You can't do what we're doing [appealing to just] one demographic," a Focus Pictures exec tells Variety. "The notion that this is a 'gay film' is proving to be mistaken."

1st week: Highest per-screen average ever on record while being shown on 5 screens.

2nd week: First movie since 1995's Pochahontas to crack the top 10 while being shown on less than 100 screens.

Okay...I surrender. The irony is that you have stated my point exactly...this thread should be devoted to discussing the merits of the movie. I began reading this thread because I am an Ang Lee fan and was "curious" (LOL) to see about his newest film. The first couple of pages in this thread seemed to stay on topic in discussing the merits of the film itself...not used as a soapbox for name-calling and political commentary. Now,go back to page three and begin reading. Long before my first post on this thread, I learned from fellow DVDtalkers that those who share my feelings on the topic ("homophobes") are "bible-belt crackheads" who are "threatened" by the prospect of seeing the movie because we will discover that we are "gay". I also read quite a few posts saying how "important" this film is to the idea of acceptance of homosexuality and how the posters hoped the film would change perceptions of homosexuality. Most of these posters had not seen the movie (perhaps it is not yet showing in their markets, either), but I didn't see them being advised to wait until they had seen the movie before commenting. I suppose it's naive to expect equal treatment for all viewpoints (ironic, isn't it?)...I wouldn't have the slightest objection if ALL posters who weighed in on the 'political' merits of the film rather than discussing the artistic elements were told to take their business elsewhere. Yeah, yeah, I know...now I know what it feels like to be "marginalized". Yawn. I believe I can deal with it. Now, I'll keep my 'crackhead' mouth shut so others who haven't seen the film can gush over it and bash those who choose not to see it because they object to the subject matter.
BTW...did anyone ever comment about the fact that these guys are carrying on an adulterous, dishonest relationship that hurts their "wives" and families?? <Sorry..."bible-belt crackhead" craziness coming out there. Realize that archaic notions such as honesty, faithfulness, and truth have no place in discussing such a "beautiful" love story>

***One related comment that has nothing to do with the other topics discussed: If BM only costs $14 million to make, why do I so often read that studios avoid making westerns because they are so "costly"?? Have the quality westerns ("Unforgiven", "Dances With Wolves", "Open Range", "The Missing") released over the past 10-15 years not done all right at the box office?

Brokeback Mountain takes place in the 1950's to 70's, I think, and no set designs or stuff of that nature nor was expensive costumes needed. Also, the film looks more intimate and a grand cast isn't needed. That is what I assume, Kansas City still hasn't got the movie yet.

Westerns also don't really make much money. I won't be surprised if Brokeback Mountain becomes the highest grossing western of all time.

Looking at Western's top money makers, Dances with Wolves made 184.2 million and opened limited. Man, looking at the list, I didn't realize that Dead Man only got released to a max of 37 screens, that is one of my favorite movies of the year.

This movie in *no way* glosses over the pain and heartbreak felt by the women and children in this story; nor does it let Jack and Ennis off the hook for the pain they inflict on themselves, each other and their families.

It's worth pointing out that being married and "living a double life" is still a very common way of dealing with being gay--and that it's a problem created by repression, not by homosexuality. It's still the most common way of coping in repressive cultures like the Musliums and even present-day Mormons. As the TV Guide reviewer put it: "Lee's film says unequivocally to straight audiences that it's in everyone's best interest for gay couples to live openly and safely."

Sounds like someone didnt get a lot of attention growing up.

The whole basis of the movie is and is very true to life in its portrayal of society and what men should act like and who they should be with even if they are unhappy. When they go against what they are feelings towards men (and I know a few in real life) they ruin not only their own lives but the people around them as well.
If society were more supportive of their feelings instead of making them hide them because of hate than they would be better off in the first place.

The film starts out in 1963, and covers about 20 years.

If you adjusted for inflation it probably wouldn't break the top 100.

Thanks for the information regarding western grosses (although had to laugh at seeing Back To The Future III on the list). Sad to see the fine western The Long Riders barely ahead of Bad Girls. Also interesting to note the nearly identical returns for Young Guns I and II. Apparently the exact same viewers went to see both...or hung around the theater until the second half was released.

But it is not so Brokeback Mountain would probably be the top grossing western of all time (or be #2 because Dances with Wolves numbers are mighty high).

The major theater chain in Nashville is Regal Cinemas. I did a search on their website for Nashville and it is listed as opening on 12/30....which really surprises me. I thought it would be sometime in January.

I'll most likely wait for the following weekend to let the crowd die down.
