Well after saying I would not see it I did anyway. It was a good film. The crowd had a lot of variety. The crowd clapped at the end which seem strange with the way the film ends. I would give it 3 out of 4. The scenery was amazing. My wife found it funny that they did the dishes more than they had sex.

It made #8 this weekend which is fantastic considering it is still only playing in limited release.
'Brokeback' Wrangles Strong Numbers in Expansion
by Brandon Gray
December 18, 2005
In limited release, Brokeback Mountain saw another stampede of moviegoers in its second weekend, while there was no springtime for The Producers in its debut.
Focus Features' cowboy love story lassoed an estimated $2.4 million from 69 locations, averaging a potent $34,188 per site, raising the total to $3.3 million in 10 days.
Last weekend, Brokeback Mountain trumpeted a $109,485 average at five bustling theaters in Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco. It's natural for a picture's average to drop significantly as it adds smaller markets.
"The danger with distributing a movie like this is if you get ahead of it, you lose it," said Jack Foley, Focus' president of distribution. "We'll do what we have to do to meet the business capabilities and the demand. I'd love to see this movie in 2,000 theaters. I have no limits to how wide I want it to go."
Foley said that the expansion will be more aggressive than previously planned, with around 275 theaters set for Jan. 6 and about 400 for Jan. 13. The original intent was to be in 300 venues by the end of January.
MOUNTAIN HIGH: Brokeback Mountain's eighth-place finish in the weekend box-office tally betrays its accomplishments. The groundbreaking film took in $2.4 million across just 69 theaters, an average of $34,194 per screening — a record for a non-IMAX film with more than 50 playdates — and is the first film since 1995 to crack the box-office Top 10 while in fewer than 100 theaters. "You can't do what we're doing [appealing to just] one demographic," a Focus Pictures exec tells Variety. "The notion that this is a 'gay film' is proving to be mistaken."

***One related comment that has nothing to do with the other topics discussed: If BM only costs $14 million to make, why do I so often read that studios avoid making westerns because they are so "costly"?? Have the quality westerns ("Unforgiven", "Dances With Wolves", "Open Range", "The Missing") released over the past 10-15 years not done all right at the box office?

Looking at Western's top money makers, Dances with Wolves made 184.2 million and opened limited. Man, looking at the list, I didn't realize that Dead Man only got released to a max of 37 screens, that is one of my favorite movies of the year.

It's worth pointing out that being married and "living a double life" is still a very common way of dealing with being gay--and that it's a problem created by repression, not by homosexuality. It's still the most common way of coping in repressive cultures like the Musliums and even present-day Mormons. As the TV Guide reviewer put it: "Lee's film says unequivocally to straight audiences that it's in everyone's best interest for gay couples to live openly and safely."

The whole basis of the movie is and is very true to life in its portrayal of society and what men should act like and who they should be with even if they are unhappy. When they go against what they are feelings towards men (and I know a few in real life) they ruin not only their own lives but the people around them as well.
If society were more supportive of their feelings instead of making them hide them because of hate than they would be better off in the first place.

Thanks for the information regarding western grosses (although had to laugh at seeing Back To The Future III on the list). Sad to see the fine western The Long Riders barely ahead of Bad Girls. Also interesting to note the nearly identical returns for Young Guns I and II. Apparently the exact same viewers went to see both...or hung around the theater until the second half was released.
