Well I finally got around to watching it today. I was surprised that I enjoyed. Yes, the effects suck and definitely need to be retooled (especially during the finale) and the new version of "Princes of the Universe" should not exist (and the whole pointless montage during which it's heard should be deleted). However, the main plot isn't all that bad. To be honest, it's a far better reimagining of the Highlander concept than, say, the alien storyline in Highlander II and that lame "ancient evil" storyling during the tail end of the series. That said, I do hope a lot was cut out of the version I saw because the characters really need to be fleshed out more (especially Anna, given the third act revelation) and the reason behind the state of the world never gets addressed.

Also, I like the nods to Tessa and the theatrical ending of Highlander: Endgame. I just wish Duncan would have lamented Connor, since he was a major loss in Duncan's life as well.

Yes, the villain was no Kurgan. However, he wasn't written as such. He was just and insane pathetic wretch and was portrayed accordingly. Yeah, he was a killing machine but given what the Elder revealed, he was more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

Spoiler:
Oh and Methos is definitely dead. Although it would have been nice to have a direct confirmation, the vibe I got was that Methos sacrificed himself for Duncan.

Also, although it was originally stated that this would be the first part of a trilogy, given the ending, I see this more as a conclusion to all things Highlander. Sure, the definitive ending of the first never stopped them from making sequels, this one really has no place to move foward.

We already know that the child is The One. The Watcher's are all gone and the Guardian was awakened by the nearing of the Source. This to me implies that the band of immortals we meet (plus the Elder) are truly the last of their kind. It's implied that the Elder died once the cycle was broken and Duncan and Anna are the custodians of the child. There's no place for any action-heavy sequels. At least, none featuring immortal characters.

Bump.

"Highlander: The Source" won't even get a theater release here in the U.S. It's heading straight for the Sci-Fi channel on September 15th. This will be the tweaked cut (meaning not the same version that came out on the Russian DVD release a while back).

Joe Molotov 08-25-07 12:03 AM

I've seen all four of the other Highlander movies, so I'll definitely watch this one too no matter how bad it gets, out of morbid curiosity if nothing else.

Ouch.

Wow...ultimate insult.
I'll still watch it though, but with no expectation now.

I assume it is a cover song, who did it? There's a band called After Forever that did a great job with it, but it is pretty similar to the original.

Somebody named John Sloman did the vocals. It's just an awful cover.

As for the Sci-Fi showing, I'll watch it to see the so called "changes" from the other version. I'm doubting they'll help all that much.

BUMP

Just a reminder to the interested that the SciFi Channel premiere for "Highlander: The Source" is coming this Saturday night (September 15th).

Draven 09-13-07 10:02 AM

They are pushing it as a "Sci-Fi Original Movie" - is that accurate? Were they involved in the production?

I might Tivo it. I suffered through Endgame, I can suffer through this.

More than half of tv movies that get a various channels "Original Movie" tag were probably not produced by that channel. I would bet 80% of Sci Fi channels original movies are indi films that are picked up. The two STV Darkman films were shown on HBO in the mid 90's touted as "HBO original premires".

Now that Sci Fi bought "premire" tv distro, they are labeling it as their own. Something similer happened to the "Man-Thing" film a few years back. Which i think has the same director as Highlander-TheSource.

Well

Here we go...

The 'look' of it isn't entirely cheesy, but the FX do seem kind of cheap.

This could be ok.

The acting/script doesn't seem too far out of line...

whoops...might have spoken a bit to soon...

cheesy villain alert...plot went into disjoint mode...

On the plus side, Joe Dawson is around, Methos, & Duncan...

Oh lord....there was a 'Mustafa' moment straight out of Lion King....I sense a death spiral.

Update...
The cover of Princes Of The Universe was absolutely dreadful arrgghhh.

Spoiler:
Welp, death spiral was right...Joe Dawson just died a pointless death

mnementh 09-16-07 04:51 AM

Wow. That was painful to watch.

Goldberg74 09-16-07 08:28 AM

I watched about a half hours worth in two different parts (channel surfing).

I saw the battle between the Guardian and the "other immortal" at the beginning and the...
Spoiler:
quick/blur/speed-up/ADHD/Matrix-like fighting style stunk... how are you suppose to combat that? I almost wish he pulled the head off that guy like he did to the security guard.

Then I saw another part where they were driving around the woods, came upon some guy tied to a cross, and then...
Spoiler:
had their car blown up, chased down by motorcycles, and captured.

At that point, I turned off the TV and went to bed.

I don't think that I missed anything.

You didn't.

This was bad. It was cool seeing the characters, but this was just, bad.

I really couldn't get into this at all. The story didn't get me interested in the characters at all, the plot elements were disjoint, etc...

Regarding the Guardian (opening scenes)...
Spoiler:

It looked like some vet put a collar on the guardian to keep him from scratching his ears or something. It really looked like one of those oversized dog-collar-funnels...WTF?

Did anyone who saw the aforementioned 'Russian version' see this? If so, how different was it?

rexinnih 09-16-07 10:42 AM

Huge original Highlander fan but will have to pass on this one.

mrhan 09-16-07 11:57 AM

Did the word prequel exist in 1986? That's where it should have headed as someone else here posted earlier.

canaryfarmer 09-17-07 10:29 AM

Saw this on Sci-Fi the other night. Words do not describe how awful it was. I honestly felt sorry for Adrian Paul. This was so much worse than H2, which up to now, had been the worst movie I've ever seen. "The planets are leaving their orbits to align! With a bunch of other stars in the galaxy! Oh noes! Earth will be flooded with radiation....somehow!" :suicide:

Superman07 09-17-07 07:55 PM

Is this scheduled to reair or go to dvd? I didn't catch it this weekend...and yes, I'm fighting the urge to say something witty in regards to the apparent awfulness of this film.

Do we know who had the most creative control over this? I know one of the producers died early this year or late last year. If he was responsible for most, perhaps we have endured the worst? Sorry if that came of cruel, but not sure how else to get at what I was going for.

canaryfarmer 09-17-07 08:50 PM

You're in luck (I guess?): Thurs, Sept 20 @9pm eastern.

stingermck 09-17-07 09:39 PM

I liked it. After so-so sequels, I wasn't expecting much, but was entertained.

Spoiler:
So is Duncan still immortal, and the source just helped him father a child, or what? Can he be "The One" if Methos just says so? I could take this as an end to Duncan's arc.

BKenn01 09-19-07 08:28 PM

I'll definitely watch this one too no matter how bad it gets
Oh it was bad. The should be ashamed of themselves for destroying such a great franchise.

duluthdemon 09-22-07 02:56 PM

Glad to see all that "WAIT FOR THE PRODUCER'S CUT" malarkey was total BS.

The film stunk on the Russian DVD, it stinks now. I don't know why people bought that producers crap/

canaryfarmer 09-22-07 10:26 PM

Superman07, did you get to watch it? Your opinion?

elengineer 09-23-07 10:32 AM

To anyone who has seen both the aforementioned Russian DVD and the version that appeared on Sci-Fi:

How did the films differ?
