Another 'Silence of the lambs'?

Today the first ever photos from WeinsteinCo.'s prequel to the Silence of the Lambs franchise, Hannibal: Behind the Mask, has hit the web. Read below to see them. "It is a revenge story that shows why he became a cannibal," said Dino De Laurentiis. "But he kills people that audiences want to see killed. So while there is a natural revulsion, the sympathy toward Hannibal remains." Hitting theaters July, 2006, the film stars Gong Li, Gaspard Ulliel, Rhys Ifans, Kevin McKidd and Anthony Hopkins(VO).

I'd heard about this a while back. I won't comment one way or the other until I see it. If it's done well, I have no problems with it, and will actually welcome it. If it's not, well then...

Part of me says they're killing the legacy of Hannibal, but the other part of me, of who SOTL is my all time favorite movie, is curious to see how this unfolds, and willing to give it a try. If it sucks and I hate it, so be it-I don't have to watch it again. I was hesitant about Red Dragon, but I ended up LOVING that one and was glad it was (re)made.

I'm quite a bit more intersted in what happens to Dr. Lecter post-HANNIBAL than what happened to him pre-RED DRAGON.

Horrible idea. How many movies are they going to make about this guy. Good villian but so were Michael Myers and Freddie Kruger the first time around until they ran it into the ground.
Why can't Hollywood just stop!?

Man, Hollywood gets dumber and dumber by the minute. Not that I care one bit about this film, but I'm not impressed by the look of the actor they got to play Hannibal. I'm predicting suck city.

so much for ending great stories with trilogys. Three is the magic number. Will Hollywood ever learn?

I'd always dreamed of seeing Gong Li eaten on film, but this is hardly what I had in mind.

Good idea or not, I'm sure I'll see it when it comes out (although I'm not fond of the cheesy title - reminds me too of VH-1's "Behind the Music"). Having Thomas Harris write the screenplay at least gives the movie some credibility, IMO.

Bad sequels don't "kill a legacy." They just fade into obscurity while the good film remains. 30 years from now, people will probably still remember "Silence," but "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon" will have been more or less forgotten, except by Ridley Scott fans and horror enthusiasts.

Dark Horizons has the title as Young Hannibal: Behind the Mask, which IMO is even worse. I just think of Young Indiana Jones, Young Sherlock Holmes, etc.

Even though it not the Oscar movie that SOTL is I would hope that in 30 years Red Dragon gets a chance. It's a pretty good film. Hannibal on the other hand can just fade away.

Young Hannibal? It better at least have Hopkins in it or it isn't a Lecter movie.

I read he's only narrating it.

They should just remake "Silence of the Lambs."

Hillary Duff as Clarice Starling
John C. McGinley as Jack Crawford
Ashton Kutcher as Jame Gumb

and

Peter Stormare as Hannibal Lecter

Gold, I tell you. Gold.

That sounds like a VH1 show or something. Terrible title.

I still would liked to have seen a return of Will Graham (given Peterson's popularity these days), maybe playing off Moore's Starling as they tried to hunt down Lector or something.

And I enjoyed Red Dragon too.

Terrible idea, in my opinion. And the title...'behind the mask'...ugh. Sounds like it'd be a better name for a featurette on the DVD.
