Does anyone know how long it takes for the call to be made after entering the info? I know I'm late to the party.

Joe Molotov 08-18-06 08:27 PM

Snakes on a Plane is at 65% (53/29) at RottenTomatoes. Suck it down, haters.

Brent L 08-18-06 08:28 PM

It's at 8.4/10 at IMDB right now.

Yes, I know that will drop, but still. It's awesome to see that score on the SOAP page, even if only for a day or two.

The call comes maybe a minute after you submit it.

mdc3000 08-18-06 08:54 PM

Saw it again tonight, theatre was only 1/4 full (like last night) and it kicked ass again. I don't care if it is a B movie, it's a B movie that I fucking love - both times I've had a hell of a time and I love seeing the reaction to certain scenes. I brought my family this time instead of my friends, and they ate it up to...seriously, my 50 something parents loved the shit out of it.

My favourite throw away line in the movie is
Spoiler:
When the power goes out, shortly after they realize the air isn't circulating and someone yells out "SNAKES!"
...pure fucking gold.

Casablanca and Citizen Kane are fantastic by themselves. SoaP isn't supposed to be. Those of you who believe only internet geeks and 40-year-old virgins are the only people interested in this I think you are misguided. Anyone who understands that this isn't a typical movie experience should be able to have fun with it. I've had a hard time explaining this movie to people who didn't see it today. It isn't good, it isn't bad... its fun.

out of all the movies ever created, why is this one the exception? Why does it get a free pass? The crowd participation factor is a bullshit excuse in defending the movie. I have a feeling that if the movie wasn't called Snakes on a Plane, people would put this in the Anaconda group instead of the "greatest theater experience of my life".

UncleGramps 08-18-06 09:47 PM

My wife and I just got back from an 8 PM showing and it was a lot of fun. I had low expectations after some reviews said that it wasn't "so bad it's good" but just plain bad. We definitely thought it fell squarely in the "good bad movie" category. Our theater was fairly sparse, and we didn't have a lot of people talking to the screen, but it seemed like most people were in the right mood, laughing at all of the death scenes, cheesy dialogue, plot holes, and so on. We got our money's worth and found it very entertaining.

Have you never heard of Rocky Horror, or are you just trying to belabor this point for some other tiresome reason?

Mr. Cinema 08-18-06 10:31 PM

I guess the point I'm making is movies shouldn't be rated based on how much the audience talked to screens. I'm reading people saying overall the movie was poorly made and a piece of shit, but the audience members bought it so it was good. well, which is it?

wewantflair 08-18-06 10:42 PM

Different things play well to different audiences, and the reaction of the audience enhances the experience. Like everything else in life, this can be equated with something like pro wrestling: audience reaction and participation can make or break how a particular event is perceived. Surely, if I watched pro wrestling taped in front of empty arenas, it would be much more challenging to evoke the responses that it does; a movie such as this is aiming at the same intellectual/social/cultural areas as pro wrestling, so I think the comparison is apt.

Bandoman 08-18-06 10:59 PM

I fucking loved this movie. It was ridiculous, unbelievable, untenable, stupid and FUN! It was pure cheese. Motherfucking snakes on a motherfucking plane indeed.

Brent L 08-18-06 11:02 PM

No, movies shouldn't be rated based on how much the audience talked to the screens. Movies should be rated based on how much you were entertained, or how much fun you had, or how the film moved you in different ways (have it be bringing you to tears with the latest drama, or just flat out making you laugh at the latest comedy).

Every single movie isn't meant to be a work of art. Some flicks just want to be fun.

You know what you're getting into when you go to see this. This movie isn't for everyone, just like a Federico Fellini classic isn't for everyone either.

Cosmic Bus 08-18-06 11:13 PM

I was surprised how empty the theater here was, particularly for a college town; only about 10 - 15 other people were at the showing this evening.

In a nutshell, I thought it was okay, but honestly, felt that it sort of occupies this grey area of being too dumb to take seriously, yet not nearly bad/corny enough to warrant the hype or (desired) reputation of being the penultimate B-movie for this generation. Not overly funny, exciting, or scary, just kind of... flat. There was only one guy who kept laughing and clapping, which kind of made me feel awkward.

These kind of crowd-interaction event movies aren't exactly my bag, so it's unclear as to whether a more packed theater would've improved my experience or just irritated me.

I'd hesitate to call the whole thing disappointing since my expectations weren't much to begin with, but I know I've had far more fun with any number of other movies (both good and bad).

Dr_Evil 08-18-06 11:43 PM

Just got back from an 8pm showing. I loved it. Eveyone was primed and ready for some motherfuckin' snakes. The theater was only about 1/3 full, but everyone was there to have a good time. If you have any interest in seeing this movie, see it this weekend to hopefully get a fun crowd to go along with a fun movie.

Strong agreement with mdc3000 on the throwaway line, it drew big laughs at my screening as well.

Kudama 08-19-06 12:37 AM

Spoiler:
I liked how the cobra that bit the kid used hemotoxin, while the rattlesnake that bit the pilot used neurotoxin (If I remember correctly).

I LOVED IT.

This is what Eight Legged Freaks wanted to be.

Kudama 08-19-06 12:53 AM

Now I have become outraged at the misunderstandting of venoms. The little kid (cobra) should have been dying of respiratrory failure...(Not a swollen arm)

Adiras 08-19-06 01:07 AM

All I know is this movie is setting snake-human relations back decades. :grumble:

slop101 08-19-06 01:12 AM

How's this tracking?

I have bet with a friend that it won't break $35mil. for this weekend.

Detective Thorn 08-19-06 02:08 AM

The only report I have heard was that it made around $1.4 million for the 10:00 Thursday shows.

Digital Groove 08-19-06 02:09 AM

Yeh I really want to see how much it makes this weekend.

What a great and entertaining movie. I laughed and laughed hard. Even when scenes were over for a good 30 seconds later I was still laughing. I"m happy to be alive right now. I wore my SOAP t-shirt there too. I saw other people with it but I felt at home.

DJariya 08-19-06 03:12 AM

I really want an audio clip of Sam Jackson's Mutha Fucking Snakes rant! Greatest sound bite in B movie history!!

This article says it's tracking a little better than Pulse and expecting a weekend in the teens.

movieking 08-19-06 07:05 AM

From what I've read, it's not tracking great based on early returns and online ticket sales. I'm estimating 10M-15M, but this is my guess, not anywhere else.

orangerory 08-19-06 07:43 AM

Good - I shorted it on HSX in the 80s. If it makes around $20 this weekend, I should make a nice return. Internet geekdom does not equal $30 mil opener....
