In spite of the great films he made prior to them (Duel, Jaws, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.), I think Steven Spielberg is going to rightfully be remembered for the tremendous job he's done in filmically memorializing the WWII era. Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and the work he didn't direct but did shepard very heavily, Band of Brothers. Those four are among my ten favorite WWII films, with Saving Private Ryan being my favorite.
I think The Big Red One has benefitted the most recently with the release of the expanded director's cut of the film. To me it's gone from what felt like a really good TV movie to a very fine film of real depth and excentricity and characterization. You can see and more importantly feel the insanity and deep passion of the original source Samuel Fuller book now.

My favorite WWII film from an Australian POV: Attack Force Z starring Mel Gibson and Sam Neill. I love this movie and it drives me a little mad that it still hasn't had a US release.
