Best WWII Film...

What is the best WWII war film? Which movie is the best at depicting that terrible conflict that occured over 60 years ago? Of the top of my head, here are my personal faves:

1) The Dirty Dozen

2) Band of Brothers (mini-series)

3) Patton

4) Cross of Iron

5) Das Boot

6) The Pianist

Is there?

Ok, in that case this thread will locked any minute now by the Mods, stupid me. -ohbfrank-

Cancer Man, I think we can still try and take this discussion in a useful direction if what you are looking for is more in-line with "Most Realistic WWII Film" instead of the generic thread title "Best WWII Film". So in this case we are not talking all war films as with those other two threads referenced or even favorite/best war films. We are looking at what people feel are cinema's most realistic depictions of World War II.

I'll suggest:
A Walk in the Sun (1945)
Story of G.I. Joe (1945)

Soldier Of Orange

The Thin Red Line

not enough films are made about the Pacific theater of WW2, and also TTRL is my favorite American film of the 1990s.

I agree on showing more of the Pacific Theater being a Marine myself but that move was soooo boring, I liked Windtalkers better then that, and not a big Cage fan.

The Thin Red Line was a truly beautiful film. I'm looking forward to Mallick's new film.

My favorite like said in one of those links is Cross of Iron

FinkPish, Those two older threads were both for "Best War Films". This thread is a lot more specific and only about "WWII Films" - which is a subgenre of the War Film genre - so I don't think this thread is the same as those other threads (despite the fact that most war films do deal with WWII).

Saving Private Ryan

I think I'd have to go with Band of Brothers as well ... anything that makes me care about that many characters and makes me want to sit and watch 10 hours of TV at once is a winner in my book.

MScottM 09-19-05 08:08 AM

My votes go to:

(Contemporary)
Band Of Brothers
Saving Private Ryan

(Old School)
The Longest Day
The Best Years Of Our Lives (if you haven't seen this one, you should if you get a chance)

Jazzbutcher 09-19-05 08:18 AM

I like MScottM's choices.

I would also add Come and See and Stalingrad to the mix. Absolutely harrowing depictions of WWII.

hermes10 09-20-05 01:37 PM

Downfall

Das Boot

Stalingrad

Come and See

A Bridge Too Far

Patton

hermes10 09-20-05 01:41 PM

Another one:

A Generation (Andrzej Wajda)

chente 09-20-05 06:33 PM

I really like Kanal. Another Andrzej Wajda movie.

Heat 09-20-05 09:28 PM

Hmm...

The Grey Zone
Run Silent, Run Deep
The Day the Clown Died*

By the way, are there any good Japanese WWII movies? The Germans have made Das Boot and Stalingrad.

* If you know what this movie is, you'll know I'm joking

SuprVgeta 09-20-05 09:34 PM

Saving Private Ryan.

The ones that first come to mind are:
"The Human Condition" trilogy - R1 DVDs are OOP
"The Burmese Harp" - not on R1 DVD
"Fires on the Plain" - not on R1 DVD

tdilia 09-21-05 09:43 AM

Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Great Escape

taa455 09-21-05 12:07 PM

others for your consideration:

Enemy at the Gates
Downfall
The Pianist

I'd say most realistic has to be Band of Brothers.

Shannon Nutt 09-21-05 01:18 PM

If we're allowed to vote for Band Of Brothers (mini-series, NOT a movie), then I'm casting a vote for The Winds of War and War & Rememberance.
