I did when I was in high school (before I got a job at the movie theater). I wouldn't dream of doing it now any more than I would go into Best Buy and steal DVDs.

Re: Movie-hopping...do you do it?
These old threads are cool to see all the old posters that no longer visit.
I've never done movie hopping but when I was 16 my friends and I paid to see The Big Green 'cause we were too young to watch an R-rated film that we wanted to see, so the plan was to sneak into that one instead. However, we were caught within minutes after going in. We were allowed to finish The Big Green but that was appropriate punishment in itself.
A guy at work does it though. He's over 50, goes by himself and has been doing it for years. Usually he stays for 3 or 4 films so he brings snacks and juice boxes hidden strategically in his clothes. I don't condone it but I've met him numerous times there and it's freakin' funny when he starts pulling stuff like sandwiches and peanuts out of his pockets and socks.

Never doen this, but when I would go to the theater as a youngster with a big group we would buy two tickets to the movie we wanted to see. The theater we went to had theaters upstairs and the box office downstairs. There was a balcony upstairs above the box office. So two guys would go in, and drop the stubs from the upper deck. Two guys below would pick them up, and go in and repeat the process till all were in. only worked if the theater had no checkers at the individual theaters. Sometimes they did, and that is why we got two tickets. If there was someone checking stubs at the individual theater, one guy would bring out both stubs, and only drop one over the side. Took longer, but just as effective.

The one time I snuck into a theatre was when the box-office refused to sell me a ticket. Seriously.. my brother and I walked 20 minutes (because our mom took the car) to see a 12:15 AM showing of "Sleepy Hollow".
We got to the box-office at midnight to buy the tickets only to be told by the teenagers behind the glass that they're closed. CLOSED? I said to them "The movie isn't starting for another 15 minutes and you aren't selling tickets?!"
"Sorry, sir, the box office closes at midnight."
"Well, we're the only ones here, there's no line behind us, can you just sell us 2 tickets... the movie HASN'T EVEN STARTED."
"No."
So we started walking home, them my brother said "fuck it" let's go back. So we just walked into the lobby, walked past the ticket-taking station (no one was there) and went into the theatre and watched the movie.
Even though I am against sneaking into films, I think it was justified in that case.

Only did this once. Me and some of my friends were wanting to see The Matrix Reloaded but couldn't go in because we weren't old enough at the time so instead we went in to see X-Men 2. After it got over we went into the theater playing The Matrix Reloaded and watched the last half or so of the movie.

For all of you questioning the moral compass of those who movie hop, I wonder how many of YOU snuck food/drinks into the theater? You realize that is where they make their money, right? I wonder how many of you would have your moral compass bothered by affecting them where they REALLY would feel it?

I was able to buy a ticket to Blade II and Resident Evil when I was 15 with no problems, but I didn't risk it much. For most R-rated films, I didn't start going regularly until I turned 17. I've seen so many kids in R-rated films nowadays I truly don't think the BO really cares any more. At least here.

I did this when I was in jr. high. Nowadays, they have too many ways to prevent it, and besides, I don't want to spend more than a couple of hours in the uncomfortable theater seats anyway.

No. Not that I'm feeling all self-righteous about it, but it just seems like one of those petty things. I don't mind paying for movies. Hell I own hundreds of them. On the rare occasion I've planned things to see two movies in a row, I will buy tickets for both.

Like most people, I did this when I was younger. Definitely did the buy two tickets and then take the stubs out to friends so they can get in deal. I have only done this once recently and I feel it was justified. I went to a theater in the city (St Louis) and all these people were talking real loud on their cell phones and yelling at the screen and the theater wouldn't do shit about it or give me my money back. I don't mind the yelling at the screen cause sometimes it makes the movie more enjoyable. Kind of like when I saw a Denzel Washington film (don't remember which one) and this lady kept saying all kinds of funny shit. Ex: Denzel got shot at and she says "Ohhh boy you done fucked up now. You don't shoot at my man, he's gonna put a cap in that ass" Being there it was hilarious, but dammit I can't stand the god damn cell phones. Makes me want to go over and punch those people in the face.
Because of DVDs being cheaper than going to a theater and the cell phone people I don't see movies in theaters to often. But I do think I wouldn't do this, not because I care about the theater, but because I don't think I could sit through several movies at a time in those chairs.

Did it last year when I went to see Hancock. Thought that sucked, so we walked straight into Step Brothers. We had never done that before, but when we were walking out there was an electronic sign that kept flashing "Step Brothers starts in 5 minutes" It was like an invitation that we couldn't resist.
Then I went to see Up and it cost 20 bucks for two people and I was outraged...so I haven't gone to the movies since, until today.
So I scheduled it, paid for Julia/Julia, walked into 500 Days of Summer, then to Harry Potter, and finally to Funny People. Ten bucks for four movies!

Re: Movie-hopping...do you do it?
I haven't done it in years. My friend and I used to meet every Saturday night to catch a movie after work and we occasionally would get there early enough to catch two movies since the second movie would be a midnight showing. Usually we just saw whatever was playing including The Grass Harp. We didn't even bother to check times before heading out there since we watched everything.
I don't know what I would consider it. For me it would be pretty much the same thing as downloading a movie instead of waiting for it to come in via Netflix assuming you delete it after watching. If I could keep up with my Netflix movies I could see myself considering it, but I can't even return my Netflix in a timely manner these days.

mcfly, all day is right. We left home at 10am for a 10:30 showing and got back home around 7:15. Crazy how one movie would end, then we'd walk into the next theater and the last trailer would be playing. Flowed really well so it wasn't as brutal as I thought it was going to be though. We didn't get stiff from the seats, we were never bored because there was a good variety of movies, and the time just kinda flew by. Add to the fact that all four movies were pretty good to great and it was really enjoyable. I even suggested that we see G.I.Joe at 7:40...but that might have pushed it.

Honestly I think this is stealing. I saw funny people and GI joe the other day, but I paid for both. IMO sneaking into other movies would be like walking into blockbuster and taking 3 movies in your pocket every time you rented 1. I mean you are going to return them, but you should be able to take more than they cost every time because they are expensive. If you can't afford 4 movies then don't see 4 movies.

I've done it fourteen times so far this year, never really have had a moral issue with it. The only time it really felt weird or I thought that I might get caught was when I saw Sunshine Cleaning as my third movie of the day and the theater was completely empty. I thought that eventually some people might come in to see the movie after the trailers were finished, but alas I was the only one. It was a 10:00 pm showing and I was actually more worried that sine they had no paying patrons that they might just shut the movie off.

Re: Movie-hopping...do you do it?
It all comes down to your own morality and if you can sleep at night. I've movie hopped before and I'll probably do it again in the forseeable future. And I sleep just fine.
And to play devil's advocate a little on the whole "if you can't afford 4 movies then don't see 4 movies" statement, I call bullsh*t. The majority of the houses bought in this country are bought with mortgages. I say if you can't buy a house outright (ie. with a suitcase full of cash) then don't buy a house.
If I could sign up for a mortgage to go see movies then I would.

With a mortgage you are going to be paying it back albeit in installments. Movie hopping, you are never going to pay anything back.. That's the difference between getting a service you never have any intention of paying for and using credit.
If you could go to 4 movies and pay for all 4 of them in installments like a mortgage then I would say go for it, however you have no intention of paying for those 3 extra movies at any point, ever.
Oh, and as you said. If you have no problem with this then go for it, but I can actually afford the movies I see so I'll just go right ahead and pay to see them.

Re: Movie-hopping...do you do it?
But I'm just trying to make the point that with people who take out mortgages, they can't pay for all of it at the point of sale, so they take out mortgages to help them pay. And in some instances recently, that is why our housing markets crashed. Some people just couldn't afford the mortgages, so they shouldn't have bought houses in the first place. But they went ahead with the purchase.
Some people can't afford a house but they purchase one anyways
Some people can't or won't afford to pay for 4 movies, but they'll watch 4 anyways
People are going to do what they want to do.
