Voltron (2027, D: Thurber)

Producer Mark Gordon and music producer Pharrell Williams will bring VOLTRON: DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE to the big screen. It will be based on the TV series that ran in the 80's.

The story centers on five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots.

Maxflier 07-26-05 09:36 AM

OMFG!
I hope this is for real and done right.
And i hope Sven is the pilot of Blue Lion, not the princess.

raven56706 07-26-05 09:47 AM

i cant wait for it.... its going to be huge

devilshalo 07-26-05 09:49 AM

Breakfast with Girls 07-26-05 09:54 AM

Awesome.

Geofferson 07-26-05 10:20 AM

Great news!

jdpatri 07-26-05 10:48 AM

Am I the only one that thinks anything they do with Voltron is going to turn out like the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers? I'm fearful. And this coming from the guy that had to get a second set of the real Voltron lions (not those damn plastic pieces of crap) because he wore the first one out.

DVD King 07-26-05 11:18 AM

Where's the source on this? Any link?

I agree with you jdpatri, unlike transformers, I don't think this show could work as well as a movie unless either they make some really creative decisions, or give in and make it another power rangers movie for the kids. I'd rather seem them take on Thundercats instead.

RocShemp 07-26-05 11:36 AM

It can be done right so long as the Robeasts are nasty as hell and they keep the cutesy stuff (the mice) to a minimum. I think we only fear Power Rangers syndrome cos some people would be stupid enough to try and emulate that. It's the only thing I hate about reviving 80's franchises. The targer audience should be the adults that watched the shows as kids but instead studios try to market these properties to kids that never heard about these shows or even care. :(

Rogue588 07-26-05 11:37 AM

Howzabout getting the originals on DVD first..and THEN piss it all over it.

RocShemp 07-26-05 11:37 AM

And I agree with DVD King in that I'd love a Thundercats movie.

Depends on what you mean by "originals". The show as we remember it? Or the two shows that were restructured and dubbed in English to become the show most of us remember?

'Voltron' clicks with Gordon for big-screen deal

"Voltron: Defender of the Universe" is coming to the big screen. Veteran producer Mark Gordon has teamed with music producer Pharrell Williams, World Events Prods. and producers Mark Costa and Ford Oelman to make a big-budget feature of the 1980s giant robot kids TV series and toy sensation. The World Events "Voltron" animated TV series debuted in 1984, about at the same time as Hasbro's Transformers toy line, igniting a morphing robot phenomenon. The story being developed will be based on the 1980s series about five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots.

pdinosaur 07-26-05 12:24 PM

is this going to be the story of a disadvantaged youth and his mechanical, transforming lion?

raven56706 07-26-05 12:27 PM

I still question the involvement of Pharell ..... i mean is he going to make the beats for the lions ;)

RocShemp 07-26-05 12:58 PM

I'd never even heard of Pharrell Williams before today. What type of music is he most involved with?

Rogue588 07-26-05 01:10 PM

As producers? Crappy rap that all sounds the same. As N.E.R.D.? A mish-mash of musical genres that doesn't sound half bad.

Why not both? Worked for Battle Of the Planets/Gatchaman..

RocShemp 07-26-05 01:22 PM

Crappy rap, eh? I hope that doesn't mean a bastardized version of the theme music. :(

I'd love to see that happen, Rogue588, but given that it's two different shows (unlike Battle Of the Planets/Gatchaman and Robotech/Macross) that were used to create Voltron. Heck, we haven't even seen the original show Speed Racer is based on make it's way to DVD so apparently it's not all that easy.

SleepyW 07-26-05 02:14 PM

This had BETTER be the lion version of Voltron. I've been telling my stepson about it for a year or two but no shows to watch. :( If this is that new Voltron or the old car version, no $ale.

raven56706 07-26-05 02:26 PM

what was the old car version?

LorenzoL 07-26-05 02:49 PM

And still there's no love for Mazinger Z. :(

This part pretty much rules out the vehicle voltron:
"The story centers on five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots.

Imagine around 29,000 (more or less) cars that make up the Voltron robot

OK, it was closer to 100, but it was a LOT of them.

Terrell 07-26-05 04:22 PM

The premise of some of the TV properties sounds as bad as some of the videogame movies. Voltron, Thundercats, and Speed Racer sound like horrible ideas for films. I don't envision anything close to good movies coming from these properties. Then again, I don't get good vibes from a Transformers movie either. Maybe it's me.
