Thank God I never seen the "cars" version. That Voltron looks like a cheap Transformer knockoff.

I've always thought Voltron was a badass. He looked cool, had lions for body parts, and had a wicked sword. Hopefully this turns out good, and is more adult than I think it's going to be.

The power rangers could have been something similar without becoming crap, but everyone knows what route they took.

Mark Gordon sets up robot film at New Regency

The 20th Century Fox-based production entity is close to a deal with the Mark Gordon Co. to adapt "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into a live-action film.

Gordon has been developing the pic, based on the popular 1980s Japanese animated TV series, comicbooks and toy line, with Justin Marks penning the script.

Should the deal close, project would be one of the company's more high-profile efforts since Robert Harper took over as chairman-CEO of Regency Filmed Entertainment earlier this year.

Interest in the property hit a high after "Transformers" turned into a box office juggernaut, raking in nearly $300 million to date.

New Regency, which hasn't had a major hit since "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in 2005, sparked to the idea of a potential franchise.

Company's upcoming pics include "Alvin and the Chipmunks," the Doug Liman-directed "Jumper," the Alexandre Aja-helmed "Mirrors" and the Eddie Murphy starrer "Starship Dave."

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Gordon will produce with Lawrence Inglee and Jordan Wynn, who are shepherding the project at the Gordon Co., which has Roland Emmerich's "10,000 B.C." bowing next from Warner Bros. Mark Costa and Ford Oelman are exec producers.

"Voltron" pic has been in the works for nearly three years, with Jim Young's Animus Films funding its development.

Marks has become a go-to guy in Hollywood for comicbook, videogame and toy-based adaptations.

He is adapting "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" for Joel Silver at Warner Bros., as well as the Green Arrow pic "Supermax," also at the studio. Marks also has "Street Fighter" in the works at Hyde Park and Fox.

I cant wait!!! I just hope its a decent flick.

I kinda liked that version, they were an expeditionary/military group. The vehicles were divided up into sea, air, and land teams with the ability to combine their (5) vehicles into one team vehicle as well as all (15) into Voltron.

I would like to see the original Japanese version, Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. I never did see the Voltron with the three robots, Voltron II or Gladiator Voltron.

Ryan Kavanaugh's financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including "300."

The Mark Gordon Co. still is attached to produce "Voltron," which is based on the popular Japanese animated TV series of the 1980s.

Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn are producers. Bryan Zuriff is exec producing. Producers expect to attach a director within the next week.

Relativity would finance and produce the project as part of its one-off picture business and shop it to distributors. In the past, Relativity films have been released by Lionsgate ("3:10 to Yuma") and MGM ("Mr. Brooks").

Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin Marks, who's behind Warner Bros.' bigscreen versions of "He-Man" and "Green Arrow."

It's Shia's antics chasing after Megan Fox that made the first hour so enjoyable.

Makowski is in talks to take on the project after New Regency recently put the giant robot project into turnaround after opting to focus on producing more high-brow fare.
