Which Wonka?

So, now that many of us have seen the film, which version of Willy Wonka do you prefer?

Johnny who?

Matthew Chmiel 07-20-05 08:09 PM

It's all about the Wilder.

Cornelius1047 07-20-05 08:31 PM

I really love Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, but my vote goes to Johnny Depp. In my opinion, he can do no wrong as an actor.

Well... we'll just forget all about The Astronaut's Wife.

Cameron 07-21-05 12:04 AM

Wilder and shame on you 14 who voted otherwise

for shame

freshticles 07-21-05 01:28 AM

Depp...because he was 'acting' or 'playing a character'...wilder was just gene wilder in that movie...and I'm sorry, but being a person who actually likes to read the the books movies are based on, that definitely does not mean gene wilder IS willy wonka...

PopcornTreeCt 07-21-05 01:58 AM

Both played very different characters. Moreso than the numerous Batman incarnations we've had. While Johnny Depp is always good I would've preferred a more sarcastic cynical Wonka like Wilder played.

but Johnny Depps wardrobe was so much more "hip" than Wilder's - those boots at the end, you go girl!

ShagMan 07-21-05 09:28 AM

I voted for the Gene Wilder version.

Giles 07-21-05 09:40 AM

Wilder may have been a better Wonka, but the overall film IMO is no where as good as the new 2005 version.

Yeah, if only Gene had stuck with the fake teeth, the slightly higher pitched voice and "acted" more effeminate.

Hindsight 20/20 and all..

Shannon Nutt 07-21-05 11:40 AM

This is a no-brainer...Depp may be the better actor, but Wilder embodied that character...it's the one he'll probably be most remembered for in his career.

movielib 07-21-05 06:34 PM

Saw the new one last Sunday and watched the old one for the umpteenth time last night. While the new one is very good it lacks some of both the charm and biting edge of the original.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - ****/****
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - ***½/****

Gene Wilder - ****/****
Johnny Depp - ***½/****

mookyman 07-21-05 06:37 PM

Gene Wilder, and that says a lot because I liked Johnny Depp before the kids were into Johnny Depp. But Gene Wilder is the author of my style.

Oh please. He's the only interesting thing about that cineschlock fest.

I have yet to see the new movie, but since I'd do Johnny Depp in a heartbeat, I'll pick his Willy Wonka over Gene Wilder.

Besides, as cuddly as Wilder was at the time, I never could stand the singing.

onebyone 07-21-05 07:52 PM

I went with Johnny Depp's Wonka, but I have much love for them both.

I'd also submit Secret Window as well. I'd agree that the only reason I own and would watch both is because of his presence. He's always a treat to watch, even in dreck like that.

Just caught the new one today. I liked it, but still enjoyed Wonka more (Wilder quoting poetry and all).

mllefoo 07-22-05 09:37 AM

Has anyone ever noticed that in every movie Gene Wilder is in, he goes on some sort of monologue rampage where he starts off speaking sing-song dialogue in a halfway normal voice, and eventually winds up screaming his lines? He's kind of like a Dalek reciting Vogon Poetry.

DRG 07-22-05 02:36 PM

Never cared for Wilder's performance. Too "Mary Poppins" for me.

auto 07-25-05 11:32 AM

Looks like a landslide for Wilder.

darkhawk 07-25-05 12:48 PM

Gene's a better Wonka but Charlie &TCF was better

Chew 07-26-05 06:41 AM

The original gets my vote in both movie and character.

ianholm 07-26-05 07:59 AM

Depp's

I agree with this..... I was a big fan of the books as a child, and although I grew up watching the 71 film dozens of times......Gene Wilder was never creepy enough in the role for me. I thought Depp was much creepier and darker. Wonka was a sadistic bastard.......he's not meant to loveable, at least that's how I always read him as in the novel. so I really don't understand people's complaints in the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" thread about Depp's Wonka not being likeable. He's not supposed to be likeable, at least not in any real way........but Depp's Wonka was a lot funnier.....and that's enough for me!

SpaceBoy 07-31-05 08:20 PM

Wilder and the old version, it's not even a contest imho.

johnnysd 08-02-05 12:33 AM

Don't see what anyone sees in the new version

I think that the new film is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I liked nothing about it. I thought it was creepy, and strange for the sake of being strange. Easily in my bottom 5 movies of all time. I hae disliked many movies in the past, but could see why someone liked it. I am totally baffled by anyone liking this completely awful film.

hdtv00 08-02-05 02:57 AM

The new ones aweful compared to the wilder one. I could'nt stand ANY of the songs in the new one, and the umpa loompa in the new one, um ok. I almost go as far as the poster right before me.

ok.....but hello "Young Frankenstein"

The Bus 08-02-05 08:38 AM

I haven't seen the new one simply because of how irritating Depp seemed in all the scenes. I'll still buy it when it comes out and see it then, but I figured I'd hedge my $15 bet and wait until the DVD release.

6 years later it is still Gene Wilder , I saw it again recently and Depp ruined the whole film

I can't believe a six year old thread got resurrected.

With that said, I'll say what I have always believed. Wilder IS Wonka. And I say that as a huge Johnny Depp fan.

Re: Which Wonka?

I never got the complaint with Johnny Depp towards the film. Yeah he was creepy but he was supposed that's what he was hired for. The remake was awful because its one the biggest pieces of visual diarrehea ever and the special effects looked awful especially 1 guy playing all the oompa loompas. I have nothing against modern CGI effects but if you can spot them easily as effects you don't get lost in a story as much.
