Which Wonka?

So, now that many of us have seen the film, which version of Willy Wonka do you prefer?

I really love Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, but my vote goes to Johnny Depp. In my opinion, he can do no wrong as an actor.

Well... we'll just forget all about The Astronaut's Wife.

Depp...because he was 'acting' or 'playing a character'...wilder was just gene wilder in that movie...and I'm sorry, but being a person who actually likes to read the the books movies are based on, that definitely does not mean gene wilder IS willy wonka...

Both played very different characters. Moreso than the numerous Batman incarnations we've had. While Johnny Depp is always good I would've preferred a more sarcastic cynical Wonka like Wilder played.

but Johnny Depps wardrobe was so much more "hip" than Wilder's - those boots at the end, you go girl!

Wilder may have been a better Wonka, but the overall film IMO is no where as good as the new 2005 version.

Yeah, if only Gene had stuck with the fake teeth, the slightly higher pitched voice and "acted" more effeminate.

Hindsight 20/20 and all..

This is a no-brainer...Depp may be the better actor, but Wilder embodied that character...it's the one he'll probably be most remembered for in his career.

Saw the new one last Sunday and watched the old one for the umpteenth time last night. While the new one is very good it lacks some of both the charm and biting edge of the original.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - ****/****
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - ***½/****

Gene Wilder - ****/****
Johnny Depp - ***½/****

Gene Wilder, and that says a lot because I liked Johnny Depp before the kids were into Johnny Depp. But Gene Wilder is the author of my style.

Oh please. He's the only interesting thing about that cineschlock fest.

I have yet to see the new movie, but since I'd do Johnny Depp in a heartbeat, I'll pick his Willy Wonka over Gene Wilder.

Besides, as cuddly as Wilder was at the time, I never could stand the singing.

I'd also submit Secret Window as well. I'd agree that the only reason I own and would watch both is because of his presence. He's always a treat to watch, even in dreck like that.

Just caught the new one today. I liked it, but still enjoyed Wonka more (Wilder quoting poetry and all).

Has anyone ever noticed that in every movie Gene Wilder is in, he goes on some sort of monologue rampage where he starts off speaking sing-song dialogue in a halfway normal voice, and eventually winds up screaming his lines? He's kind of like a Dalek reciting Vogon Poetry.

Never cared for Wilder's performance. Too "Mary Poppins" for me.
