On the TV show, Ebert not only gave it a thumbs up, but said it was one of the best films of the year.

Ebert also loved SPAWN. Nuff said.

Care to specify? After all, Superman had three nominations.

Boy, nothing is a secret nowadays...My personal review of the movie...

Spoiler:
Batman is an intense, cerebral character, and that is just this type of movie. It's true that the movie doesn't really necessitate more than one viewing; and many of the details become very hard-grounded so that the audience doesn't miss them. It's a little slow for what it is and I don't blame Nolan for choosing the path that he did. Nolan did a great job of making a confusing movie watchable and enticing without alienating audiences with "Memento", and he does an excellent job here as well.

The "two villain" motif doesn't work like it did in the other Batman movies and most people will probably be surprised at just how little we see of them and Batman in the suit in general. This movie is really about the driving forces behind Bruce Wayne's life. Even the big-budget effects scenes are really toned down and are less about eye-candy than they are about moving the story along to the next dialogue sequence.

The acting doesn't need any comment. Everyone here is at their best; Bale and his endless charisma that makes Brad Pitt look like a flat lifeless statue; Freeman and his "fatherly but not condescending" role that he is apparantly destined to play for eternity; Holmes and her quiet naivete while at the same time channeling a very real strength of character; Neeson again plays a mysterious master of the arts - for a second I thought I was watching Qui-Gon Jinn.

I finished the movie VERY satisfied. If this is the beginning of the Batman franchise I think that audiences have a lot to look forward too. I like it much better than the Spider-man movies (which I thought were a little to hammy for their own good). Other mainstream comic movies were really lacking IMO (X-men 1/2, Hulk, DD, Elektra, blah blah).

So would you say the movie will do well or not so great at the B.O.?

Plus when you consider the main audience, wealthy media folks, is it's easy to imgaine them pricing it like that.

From what I've read, I think it will do well, but not extremely so.

From reviews it doesn't sound like it will be the type of movie to draw in a ton of repeat business (due to being kind of long for a summer movie and apparently slow in parts).

I can't wait to see it though!

........and Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2, and Van Helsing. That said, Batman looks like a good movie. My guess in terms of box office is around 225-240 million. Why not any higher? Because I'm not sure a dark, gritty, deadly serious film about a comic book character is the recipe for huge box office. Also, from what I've heard, Batman doesn't appear until a full hour in the film. That is going to make for some restless souls. Anyone remember Hulk? I thought Hulk was a good film, but people basically didn't want a deadly serious character study. They wanted to see Hulk wreak havoc, and he didn't appear for 40 minuts. Batman, like Hulk, is the main attraction in the film, and he doesn't show up for 60 minutes.

Now, none of this means it's not a good film. In fact, I expect it is. But that doesn't necessarily garner huge money at the box office. I expect it to do very well, but not 300+ million huge. Plus, we've already had four Batman films, the last one being not good at all. We'll see.

My guess it WOTW has a better chance at 300 million.

RocShemp 06-06-05 11:52 AM

The basic concensus, I believe, is that this film, while finally a Batman film done right, is not a crowd pleaser. I agree that it will do good business and will probably open very big. But I think word of mouth will be poor as I think that Varierty reviewer is a good example of your average filmgoer that just wants to see tons of Bat-gadgets and non-stop mayhem. Therefor I think it is at a risk of sinking very fast, as well. :(

I'm sure a sequel will get made but I wonder if it will get a budget as big as this one.

Wasn't that essentially the same case as Superman and Spider-Man in their respective films as well?

I do agree that Batman probably won't draw huge numbers. I predict something along the lines of the X-Men/X2 range.

RocShemp 06-06-05 01:46 PM

The problem is that Superman was one of a kind (and still is) and Spider-Man had been in the works for over a decade. Those films had a lot of interest in them (and Superman was truly great whereas Spider-Man was very good).

Although it's been a few years, people still feel the sting of Batman & Robin and there are still a large group of people that view the Burton films as some Holy Grail (which, though very good, they are far from being). Just look at the IMDB boards to see how polarized the audiences are towards this film.

Batman Begins seems to be truly excellent and, in a bizarre twist that seems like something from The Twilight Zone, its excellence may very well be it undoing as many seem to favour pomp over quality these days (particularly as regards comic book and action films).

I doubt the film will bomb and I don't think it will underform either. But I have a feeling this wont be a record setting hit, either.

I think the movie will do extremely well opening weekend, possibly even eclipsing Spider-man, but then it will drop off significantly. I can't imagine chidren enjoying this movie.

I agree with you about the kids, and I agree that it will drop off, but I think the curiosity of review readers (especially non-comic fans) will allow the film to have legs beyond the normal four-week multiplex stay.

Cornelius1047 06-06-05 08:44 PM

Opening weekend will not beat Spider-Man. No way. I do believe it will be a better movie though. I'm pretty stoked, as Batman has always been my favorite comic book (non)superhero.

I agree! It won't even come close. I'm going to say 65-70 million.

Deftones 06-07-05 01:31 AM

Why such early reviews? This still doesn't come out for over a week.

The movie has already world-premiered and there has been a number of press screenings done for this movie.

I saw the film with a bunch of 12 year-olds, and they LOVED it.

It'll be big with the pre-teen crowd. And lordjesusmanno, the geeks will see it over and over...

BATMAN BEGINS is the very best beginning to a Superhero franchise I’ve ever seen.

Kudama 06-07-05 06:28 PM

I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but I really felt very very let down by the Burton films. Then I hear that they're doing this and i'm like "right. another everyman Batman. God forbid the character have any drive to act like a psychopath."

Over the past 6 months, as I read and saw more and more...Well I am pretty goddamn excited. After Sin City, this has becaome my most anticipated for the year.

Color me :D

Mr. Cinema 06-07-05 09:02 PM

I can't wait to see this. The trailers were great and I'm excited to see Cilian Murphy as the Scarecrow.

IMDB lists it at 140 minutes. Assuming there's 10 minutes of ending credits, that's barely over 2 hours. I think the summer movie crowd can handle an epic of that length.

Catch 21 06-08-05 03:02 AM

I just came back from an Advance screening. Yeah , I have to agree this is the best Superhero start. I loved the cameos or hints of. I also went with 5 comic book store employees and they all thought it was "badass".Finally, a movie where the main

Saw a special sneak preview last night. I'm not going into depth here, I want you all to enjoy it. But everything is amazing. I really doubt if anyone will not like it. People were clapping and laughing; the audience was talking how flipping great it was heading to our cars.
It really blows away the Burton series (he directed the first two and produced the Schumacher two). So many neat moments. I can't wait til the 15th to see it again and to talk more in depth about it.
