Here's the simplest answer:

He changed his name to Ben Kenobi because he was going into hiding. Kind of a witness protection thing. The reason Lucas didn't change his last name was so Luke would be able to think of Old Ben when he hears Obi-Wan in the message. Had he changed his name to Ben Smith then Luke wouldn't think Ben Smith when he heard Obi-Wan Kenobi on the hologram message.

Like Kenobi said...."You eyes can deceive you"

so all he had to do was change his first name.

so there's the books that are directly relented to movie and connecting the gap between Ep 4 to Ep 5.
anybody got any more question?
those aren't novels... they were just collections of the daily star wars comic strips that appeared in newspapers

His name is never in writing in the movies. Your eyes would never have seen it.

First of all they are collections of just comics (that are issued monthly) not comic strips (which are daily three to five panels in the comic section of a newspaper), and just so you a collection of comics is called a graphic NOVEL but call it what you feel like.

Your books are collections of the Classic Star Wars comic books...

...which were collections of the daily 3-5 panel comic strip that DID run in newspapers in the late 70s by Russ Manning and early 80s by Goodwin & Williamson

Dont trust me? Do you trust Dark Horse?
From 1981 to 1984, comic-book greats Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson turned out a popular series of Star Wars newpaper strips. Featuring the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han in the time between the first and second movies, these strips were science-fiction adventure at its best.

Dark Horse reformatted those strips to make them work as a continuous story in a series of comic books

Next time, save your smartass underlining and giant fonts, you're wrong on this one junior. Your graphic novels are just a collection of strips (which, by the way, conflict with the Marvel comic books which detailed inbetween-movie action--none of it is canon).

As GuessWho says, these are just collections of Goodwin/Williamson newspaper strips that ran in the 1980s. (A few of the redundant panels have been removed to help the story 'flow' better.)

They collected all of the strips in their entirety in a limited hardcover set -- something I'd recommend to anyone who finds these enjoyable.

Fun stuff, but nothing that is considered canon except by the most lienient of fans.

I can admit when I'm wrong and I was (partly) but they were still turned into graphic novels, so let's call it a draw

One thing everyone is forgetting is that The Emperor and Vader think Obi-Wan is dead. The clone troopers that shot him down think that he's dead and I'm sure reported that to the emperor.

Maybe he's obsessed with finding him because the little bastard sent him spinning off into space in his little spacecraft and blew up the Empire's ultimate weapon (The Death Star) and Vader wants to get revenge on him?

Vader also remembers his former last name.

A book? oh come on. seriously. i can't believe you actually read a star wars book. those stupid things were written for the soul purpose of trying to earn money. you know how popular star wars was? some redneck with a beer gut probably said " Why is George Lucas earning all the money and i'm Not? *burp*" " Hey Steve, I think I'm going to make up my own star wars story in book form" " I didn't know you were literate Bob!"*burp*" I'm not!" *fart*" What's literate Steve?" Wow I hate to bring back a thread that died over a month ago, but I have to just apologize for my retarded statement that Vader and The emp think Obi Wan is dead. I seriously don't know what the hell I was thinking. Sorry about that.

Here's the official cannon straight from Lucas' mouth. When Obi-Wan first went into hiding he ditched his last name and simply became known as Benny From the Block. After a failed music and acting career he became an violent alcoholic and starred in numerous porn films. By now a withered, old man Benny, shortened to Ben after critical backlash, turned to hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine and quickly injected what little was left of his wealth into his veins. When even viagra couldn't save his sinking career, Old Ben (as he was now jokingly referred to) sold his remaining possessions and was last seen running off into the Tatooine desert screaming like a banshee. He was never seen again.
