I think they both have things over the other. But I'll grant you that NotLD certainly seems to have gone on to be the more influential of the two. Personally, I like them both. NotLD is a more modernesque film and The Birds definitely has more of an old Hollywood aesthetic. And whereas The Birds did not invent the 'rampaging animals' genre, NotLD has certainly given rise to the zombie genre. It's tenuous to measure a film's merit based solely on its influence on other, subsequent, films, however. For instance, I think we can agree that Lawrence of Arabia is a better film than Die Hard, but Die Hard is the more influential of the two (at least directly so, anyway).

I think, for the most part, we're in agreement. I do like The Birds, I just don't think it's a masterpiece or Hitch's best.

'Birds' redo calls Campbell as director
By Borys Kit
Oct 19, 2007

Martin Campbell is circling to direct the re-imagining of the Alfred Hitchcock classic "The Birds," which Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures are producing for Universal.

Naomi Watts has been loosely attached to star for some time, but her involvement is script dependent.

While Campbell has no offer to direct, the early talks put the potential movie's production dates past any possible directors and actors strike.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing via Platinum Dunes, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing via Mandalay Pictures.

"The Birds," released by Universal in 1963, featured an attack by birds on the California coastal town of Bodega Bay. Coming after "Psycho," Hitchcock's innovative use of special effects and sounds continued to cement his reputation as a horror director and launched many "nature on the attack" imitators. The movie also featured the screen debut of the director's newest ingenue, Tippi Hedren.

The studio says the redo will owe more to the Daphne du Maurier short story than the Hitchcock film based on it.

Scott Bernstein is overseeing for Universal. Exec vps production David Zelon and Jonathan Krauss will oversee for Mandalay.

CAA-repped Campbell last directed "Casino Royale." His credits include "Beyond Borders," "The Mask of Zorro" and "GoldenEye."

Martin Campbell in talks to direct for Universal
By TATIANA SIEGEL,

Naomi Watts will star and Martin Campbell is in negotiations to direct Universal's new version of "The Birds."

U is planning a reimagining of Daphne du Maurier's short story, which inspired the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce through their Platinum Dunes shingle, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures.

U is not looking to rush the pic into production prior to a possible strike.

Stiles White and Juliet Snowden wrote a version of the script that is still being developed. New scribes may be brought aboard.

For the moment, Campbell's and Watts' dance cards are already filled with other projects.

Campbell is attached to Fox's runaway train actioner "Unstoppable" and crime thriller "36" at Paramount. He most recently helmed the latest James Bond installment "Casino Royale."

Watts, who will next be seen in Warner Independent's "Funny Games," is filming "The International" and will follow that up with First Look's adaptation of Amy Sutherland's "Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premiere School for Exotic Animal Trainers."

Mandalay's David Zelon and Jonathan Krauss will oversee for Mandalay. Scott Bernstein is overseeing the pic for U.

I'm not a big fan of the work Platinum Dunes does, but I like Campbell as a director (for the most part) and any opportunity to stare at Watts for a prolonged period of time is ok in my book. I'll wait for a trailer.

Re: More horror re-makes Part 2 (Bay at it again) - this time... The Birds

After successfully remaking several 80s slasher films, Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes banner look ready to remake one of the master of suspense’s classic films alongside Peter Guber’s Mandalay Pictures.

Platinum Dunes, Mandalay Pictures and Universal have tapped Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen to direct the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.”

Bay will produce along with his Platinum Dunes producing partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller with Guber and David Zelon also producing through Mandalay Pictures.

The original plotline followed a San Francisco socialite who moves to a small northern California town that is suddenly under attack from various types of birds. Plot details for this pic are unknown at this time.

Universal Pictures executive vice president of production, Scott Bernstein will oversee the project for the studio.

Van Rooijen is repped by WME and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman and is best known for his foreign film “Taped.”
