I would agree with you about the story - I just happen to love the music (it's the music I was really calling trite - very standard 80's vibe, but I still love it ).

I'm still not really saying it right - I say "trite" because it was such a "standard" on broadway for so many years that it has gotten a backlash of criticism, when it was never really meant to be an epic story like les mis or phantom, just a neat bit of fluff with fun costumes and fun songs. To help explain - the definition of trite: hackneyed or boring from much use : not fresh or original; TRITE applies to a once effective phrase or idea spoiled from long familiarity.
