Then, they offered it to Richard Kelly of DONNIE DARKO fame. I can only assume he held the script in as much disdain as many of you do, since it's not exactly like he's a superstar director that doesn't need work for work's sake at this point.
Thirdly, they went to the source, Hideo...

A bit self-important, no?

I think the whole Ring movies have more to do with marriage. Naomi's character doesn't have anyone to go to, she raises her kid by herself, men that enter her life mysteriously die -- even the ghost story doesn't have any men in it, save for Samara's manic father who also gets a tragic death. How much of the fear comes from a creepy ghost, and how much comes from the fact that day after day, night after night, Naomi's character needs to fend for herself, with no assistance?

well, this has convinced me to save my money. RINGU was a great movie, THE RING sucked terribly (and I actually saw THE RING before I saw RINGU so I was not swayed by seeing the original first, THE RING just seemed too predictable and boring to me, where as RINGU, even after seeing THE RING, made me jump). Problem is my friends all loved the garbage that was THE RING (and none are willing to watch RINGU because it is subtitled), and they have been trying to force me to see the sequel. Now I will tell them, I'll go if they pay, then I know I won't have to see it.

My friends watch ample subtitled flicks, so that wasn't the issue... No that would be the freeze frames and essentially ESP aspects to the movie that just made it silly, and a good deal less interesting.
Most critics seem to still blame the script, which bodes will for Hideo's directing (Which is uneven at best to begin with), and while I'm glad they didn't redo Ringu 2, well, this one just shoulda been a shitload better.

Definitely not as bad as everyone is making out but a definite disappointment
It was a mistake moving away from the tape, started off well then turned into a sad possession horror movie. Naomi Watts tried hard but the script let her down.
Had a few creepy moments but not enough

I cannot begin to explain to you how much I despised this film. Granted, I had high expectations after enjoying the first film. Being a fan, and owning the original Japanese films, I was excited they had tapped Nakata to direct. The Japanese films creepiness was derived from the stylish imagery Nakata relied on.
This film was an abomination, to say the least. I had recently watched the bridging 15 minute film included with the re-release of the ring. I thought this was fantastic. It had the all the tension you would expect from this movie. I thought the whole premise of teenagers using the video as a thrill ride was fascinating. I was hoping the whole film would revolve around these characters, and that Watts' character would at some point merge into the story. The beginning led me to believe that this would be the case, but those characters were written off within the first 15 minutes or so. Huge disappointment.
The

was laughable. Someone else had mentioned the comparison between this sequence and the Book of the Dead. Evil Dead was released in 1981. This is the year 2005 if I am not mistaken. If that was a homage to that film, it was a poorly done one at that. I expect a bit more creativity than a
This film is boring...really boring. The only scene that truly made me jump was the deer scene. And even then, the fakeness of the cgi detracted from the impact of it. The dialogue was predictable and unimaginative. The majority of the film focused on Rachel and Aidan. There was no subplot to take the film in a new direction. The story was tired and I cannot believe that it was released in this final form. I cannot imagine that test audiences thought this film was a winner. The only solace I had was that I got a free ticket and only had to pay for one. Otherwise, I would have been even more annoyed that I wasted two hours of my life...

Well, this film doesn't necessarily prove that Gore Verbinski is a better director than Hideo Nakata, but I like him more. This movie was downright incoherent - this was true of both the American and Japanese originals in spots as well, but they made up for it with loads of atmosphere. In this one, the story was predictable and derivative, the filmmaking was joyless, and every single scare was completely telegraphed. It's a shame Sissy Spacek was only in this for a minute; she's the only person involved who puts any conviction into the story (though it was nice to see Gary Cole pop up too).
Here's the biggest problem: the construction of the storyline makes it impossible to be afraid, because there's nothing to be afraid of.
Remember when there were rumors that this would be directed by Sam Mendes or Steven Spielberg? They're pretty hilarious now.

Man, I just saw Rings, the short directed by Jonathan Liebesman (who did Darkness Falls) and cowritten by him and Kruger and I was floored by how soooo much better this was than Ring 2. They should have just followed this storyline and they would've had a classic I think. Funny thing is, this ends right where Ring 2 begins but even then Ring 2's people dont follow the tone set by the short, proving even more they dont know what they were doing.

FWIW, my idea of "justice" is to NOT allow members to take shots at each other like...
