I'm with most of you. Liked it, didn't blow me away. It had all the components to become a classic action thriller in the vein of 'Die Hard' or 'The Negotiatior' but it asked the audience to suspend way too much disbelief in the plot. I'm all for mindless, cleverly written action drama a'la the show '24' -- but the story for Hostage was so entirely implausible that I felt cheated from what could of been Grade A entertainment. The charachters were all one-dimensional and motives were never fully explained. Kevin Pollack's talents were sadly wasted. The ending was a big time letdown. Sheesh. Perhaps there was an alternate shot which may show on the DVD?

I finally got around to watching this and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I agree with others who said that those 3 child villians were some of the worst actors that I've ever seen.
Everytime I saw that Marshall character, I kept thinking that this kid looks like a young Undertaker from WWE/WWF fame with that hugeass forehead of his
Other than the ending, I didn't see it as too much of a Die Hard movie.
3 stars out of 4.

I think the thing that really killed the ending was that the only character involved that we had any attachment too was Willis's character. His wife and daughter were barely in the movie before the climax, and Walter Smith was unconscious for a large portion. They should have structured the story so that the children were rescued last. Then at least we would have had more emotional investment in the scene.
The script also had a lot of sloppy elements that lead no where. Like the two copies of the DVD. I thought it would be a bit too cliched to have a switch take place, but then why not throw one more on the pile. Also, the pot smoking scene between Mars and Jennifer seemed to imply a connection taking place, but nothing really came of that other than showing he was a psycho (for those deaf, blind and slightly retarded viewers who didn't get it within the first minute he was shown on screen). I didn't expect her to fall in love, but I thought perhaps a moment of conflict, or at least a bit of empathy. I'm not sure if that was what they were trying to convey with the long shots of her at the end of the fire scene. It seemed a bit late at that point.

I just watched this and I thought it had some pretty intense scenes like the knife in the face and the reveal of Willis' family. I actually wasn't expecting it to be that good and was pleasantly surprised. Good action but the ending could have been a little better. The resolution with the original family was great but Willis' didn't seem as good. I'm not for sure how they could have done it to make it better though. Maybe somehow they could have had the family there in the van at the original house.

it was decent. i didn't expect much and it worked out well.
i just really liked that the sought after object was a dvd.
like a bunch of members here ploted the whole thing to get pollacks the killer crit. dvd.
or bruce willis after telling the kid to get the dvd him also running down his wish list to him, "Hey kid, grab anything OP!"

Re: HOSTAGE review thread...
I watched this the other night (review Blu-ray) and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I like the mid-90s aesthetic the picture had going for it, and Willis was strong, as usual. Nice to see Ben Foster's early work; that guy has some serious range.
