HOSTAGE review thread...

I'm submitting that Ben Foster and Jonathan Tucker are nearly the two worst actors in young Hollywood.

Discuss.

Matthew Chmiel 03-08-05 10:43 PM

As fans of Ben Foster (I was a fan of Flash Forward back in the day) and Jonathan Tucker (I am a huge fan of 100 Girls), I don't know how to respond to you. I'll wait until I see the movie to make any comments.

:)

Taking into account our relationship here on the board, I'm just gonna mark you down as a "disagree."

:) Aww, you know I love you Shelton. ;)

This movie was directed by someone whose previous work is video games. That's all I needed to know.

Snowmaker 03-10-05 08:40 AM

Howard Stern keeps promoting this movie saying, "Bruce Willis is back in his Die Hard form...".

Was this movie script originally supposed to be Die Hard 4?

Not that I'm aware of. He's playing the same type of tortured, reluctant hero though. It's a very John McClaneish role.

The Berardinelli gives it 3 stars:  http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/movies/h/hostage.html

MetaCritic

LA Weekly Scott Foundas
The movie isn't particularly tasteful or finely crafted -- but it grabs you by the jugular, and only during an overcooked climax does it finally relax its grip.

Variety Robert Koehler
What sends this initially tense thriller over the precipice is a plot scheme that never knows when enough is enough.

Village Voice Jessica Winter
Bruce looks hot and underplays handsomely as always, but Hostage is a steaming pile of siege clichés and screaming unlikelihoods.

That is just a canned line he has to say when promoting the movie for when he gives away prize money.

HighSpeedOnIce 03-12-05 12:35 AM

I saw this film earlier tonight and all in all I really enjoyed it.
It was a good popcorn flick. - No regrets here. :)

Tarantino 03-12-05 01:38 AM

I really liked it.

I think the 'bad guy' in the movie was one of the most evil villians I've seen in a long, long, time.

And when
Spoiler:
she shoved the knife through his cheek, I let out a "FUCK!" in the theater.

Good stuff.

Tarantino 03-12-05 02:28 AM

One glaring plot hole...

Spoiler:
When he killed those guys at the end, they clearly weren't the 'end of the foodchain'...so when the boss finds out all of his guys are dead, he'd probably kill Walter Smith and Willis's families anyway...right? Well, Willis and his family for sure...

matome 03-12-05 08:47 AM

I'll probably check this out today. Didn't even hear of this until recently.

rkndkn 03-12-05 12:31 PM

I was pretty disappointed with this movie -- the trailer had me really anticipating it, too. I enjoy Willis a lot, but the story was pretty cliched. And I agree with Scott about Jonathan Tucker -- extremely poor performance and he annoyed me to no end.

movieking 03-12-05 05:37 PM

I liked it. I knew nothing before I saw it. As for the ending:

Spoiler:
I wanted more of a resolution. I am usually fine with a vague ending, but I think that we were cheated out of one with this movie. Wasn't this based on a book? For anyone that read the book, do we ever find out anything?

Patman 03-12-05 09:51 PM

This film feels like Die Hard flipped around, with Bruce Willis playing the cop on the outside, trying to talk a small boy through the worst night of his life as he and his dad and sister are held hostage after things go haywire, and the 3 bad guys are stuck in a messy situation.

Motivations are reinforced, and propel the characters through a night where nothing goes right for the characters involved. There is a bit of over-emoting on Willis's part in spots, and there is some pretty so-so overwrought acting from the bad guys. But as the film makes it way through the twists and turns, it's never boring, but the ending needed a little more tweaking in my eyes.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

Tarantino 03-13-05 02:14 AM

I totally dug the Alien and Crow visual references.

Al Padrino 03-13-05 10:49 AM

Had to see it because my girl is a huge Willis fan. Didn't love it, but I liked it a lot considering I don't care for action movies. I thought it was solid all the way up until the climax, which felt forced to start blowing stuff up and having loud noises to qualify it as an action thriller.

Rammsteinfan 03-13-05 05:20 PM

I liked it alot... one of the better films I have seen this year so far. I liked the visuals and style the director brought. Good acting from Willis. He needs to stick to this kinda film and not comedies of recent past.

Deftones 03-13-05 06:31 PM

I liked it quite a bit. Alot of tense moments. I will say one thing, Rumor Willis didn't get her mom's looks. Bow wow.

movieking 03-13-05 07:18 PM

Didn't realize it was her in the movie.

Don't be too quick to judge though. Willis was on Ellen a few days ago, and when Ellen showed a family picture, she was trying to figure out who was missing, but Demi was. Rumor was a dead ringer for her in that picture anyway.

peon73 03-21-05 12:03 PM

i just saw this movie over the weekend and enjoyed myself alot. like someone said earlier, it's a great popcorn movie.

i couldn't help thinking the kid would be great as bean in ender's game if it ever makes it to film.

I'm assuming the Alien ref you speak of was
Spoiler:
the air vent chase...
... and The Crow ref was what?
Spoiler:
Mars walking through the flames?
