Well, yeah...kinda embarrasing, actually, but I've never actually watched Star Wars. But I just for some reason got the itch to do so. But what order should I watch them in? 4-6 were the "originals," right? So should I watch 1-3 (the "new" ones?) first, or 4-6? I'm confused...thanks!

how about best to worst? 5, 4, 3*, 6, 2, 1
seriously, I would go 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3
*DISCLAIMER: better than ROTJ but worse than ANH is purely speculation

Proper order is: 4, 5, 6. Make sure Han Solo shoots first.
Then read a summary of 1 and 2 if you must.

I like em. They can't compare, but they certainly don't suck, IMO.
James Berardinelli has good things to say about the 1st and 2nd if you're looking for positive reviews.

I wouldn't say I hate them, they're just disappointing compared to the first three. Occasionally some flashy special effects, but the stories aren't nearly as interesting and the writing is nowhere near as good.

Watch them in the order they were released. 4, 5, 6, then 1, 2, and 3. The prequels do tell the story before the last three, but really they work better as telling the backstory.
Plus, if you start with number 1, you'll get to part 2 then have to stop and wait or skip part 3 until may.
And definately watch the prequels. They're not as great as the originals, but in general they're fun space advanture movies with fantastic special effects. Well, I think AoTC is, I don't care for The Phantom Menace. But give em a watch anyway. As backstory they are interesting, and visually they're spectacular.

Seriously now, I agree with the 4-5-6-1-2-3 thing. Actually, if you can get your hands on the original cuts of 4-5-6, I would suggest:
4OE - 5OE - 6OE - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4SE - 5SE - 6SE
Where OE = Original Edition; SE = Special Edition (the one on DVD)

If at all possible watch the original widescreen versions of IV-VI. I'm not sure how you'd be able to find them these days(aside from bootlegs or LDs on eBay), but that should be your first exposure to Star Wars.
I suppose the DVDs will suffice, but I'd hate for you to be sitting there wondering who that shaggy haired kid is at the end of Return of the Jedi.
