Surpsied by some of the negative reviews on here... I LOVED The movie and thought, so far anyhow, it's easily the best movie of the year. Extremely well done and enjoyable. A Must See this summer.

Crowe made this movie (that and the cinematograhy). The man may do some silly things off the screen but he commands it on the screen and has yet to make a clunker since Breaking Up in 1997. Hey, he was the only good thing in Proof of Life. Heck, I even thought he was awesome in Virtuosity.
I believe Ben Affleck was in talks to star in this before Crowe. And wasn't Billy Bob or Travolta considered? Anyways, I really can't see anyone else in that role. Crowe is just a man's man and totally believable in this.
Anyways, I very much enjoyed Cinderella Man and would recommend it.

Saw this movie last night, I absolutely fell in love with it. Russel Crowe portrays James Braddock amazingly, Paul Giamatti did an awesome job as Braddock's trainer and Rene Zellwegger is great as his wife, Mae. Ron Howard also once again proves himself as a great director.
The one thing that i did not like about this is the portrayal of Max Baer. While some of the stories and such of him are relatively true, he was not the ferocious beast that he is portrayed to be in the movie. But, what can you really expect, the more evil the "villian" is, the more the audience will care for the protagonist. While I do not agree with this, I can understand it a bit.
Overall, this is a great movie. Hopefully MDB's wins at the Oscar's last year won't affect and nods or wins for this movie.

I caught this today and absolutely loved it. Fantastic from start to finish. I didn't get bored once and I was a little worried as I'd seen Star Wars and just walked over as CM was starting in 10 minutes.
Crowe and Giamatti were fantastic, hope to see oscar noms for both of them.

You can't fault someone for interpreting a true story, unless they take creative liberties and completley bend the truth.

Phenomenal film. Beautifully realized and extremely well-mounted. All three principal actors deserve Oscar nominations, as does the movie and Howard's effective direction. I think it's one of the finest boxing films ever made. Up there with "Raging Bull" and "Body and Soul." Sure, it may seem familiar and not particularly original, but it's still a beautiful, inspiring story that is wonderfully told. My God, people, what on earth more do you want from a Hollywood summer movie? The industry gives us a real chesnut of a movie in the middle of the most juvenile time of the year for releases, and people still bitch and moan about being manipulated or it's sappy and sugary.

Saw it last night, really enjoyed it. I liked the pacing, reminded me alot of Seabiscuit. I'm looking forward to the DVD special features to learn more about the making of the man himself.
Crowe is just an incredible actor. Too bad he's nuts.

Anyway, it's nice to see everybody's favourite Aussie Oscar-winning, scrotum-scratching, barroom brawler back in action doing what he does best: crushing human skulls for a living...
In other news:
Russell Crowe arrested for assault.
Crowe's film takes a beating at box office.
And my all-time personal favourite:
Russell Crowe wants to become a gay icon.
As Baby Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) said to her big ex-movie star sister in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?: "But chu'are, Blanche, chu'are!"

Good Luck, Russell!

This movie was incredible. The scenes were so intense and heart stopping. A really excellent boxing movie. The whole time I was thinking "Rocky I". It had so much heart and soul and it was all true! I loved it and can't believe there was so much hate for it.
Paul Giamatti was robbed before...give him Best Supporting for this. He was amazing.

I too loved the movie. The first half might be a bit slow for some people but I loved it and it proves to be crucial for audience to root for the character. Paul Giamatti is excellent, but I do wish that I see more Clinty in the movie.

I saw this for the first time tonight and loved this film. I am, by no means, a Ron Howard fan, but he delivered here. This felt like I wasn't watching a Howard film, which was a plus. Crowe was excellent. Giamatti was excellent. The pacing was great, the fight scenes were authentic and well shot. I think we'll be seeing this movie at the Oscars with a few nominations (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and maybe Screenplay and Cinematography.)
In all, one of the top 5 films I have seen this year.

this is great movie. very moving. rene zellweger was fantastic, her accent was so perfect i didn't even notice she had one until the end. her best performance i think. easily best actress for this film, who else this year has given a better one. hopefully crowe doesn't get robbed at oscar time like he did with "a beautiful mind". i have to watch it again.

Watched this last night. Great movie. Very moving, and I really got caught up in the excitement of the boxing scenes. Enjoyable from start to finish.
I wonder why people who obviously can't stand Ron Howard films still watch them? Maybe they need something to complain about??

Someone's complaining about Howard's film? Wow. That's just... wow. May be they're die hard Michael Bay fans (no offense, but Bay's film is awful. Thankfully he did good in The Island - which is the only film of his that I liked).
I always thought Howard have a great sense of how to pace his film. His Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind are a good example of it - besides Cinderella Man, of course.

I liked it when I first saw it, but now I'm beginning to love upon repeat viewings.
And Howard can do a pretty good commentary.

As far as Cinderella Man I Gotta say it's one of my top 5 favorites of the year. Russell Crowe plays a man who is virtually nothing like he is in real life.
I suggest anyone who thinks that it's just another tripe underdog story should watch it again, it's not so much about boxing as it's about dealing on hard times and what certain people were willing to do for their families.

Cinderella Man nominations??
Why is this movie only nominated in 3 categories? And 2 of them are crappy categories. I don't care for Russel Crowe as a person. But his acting is superb in every movie. He should easily be nominated and the movie as a whole should be up for best film. Ron Howard should be nominated in the director category too
What is wrong with this years noms? Obviously Brokeback should be there. But what about the others??
What a crock.

You know, we already have a thread on the topic of who got snubbed and why. Cinderella Man would be part of that. Though I will say that Paul's nomination seems to be one of those "make up" easy wins for him.

Sorry, any mods can delete/lock this if need be. I noticed that thread after I posted it. Besides, the topic is for Cinderella Man nominations. The other thread talks about ALL nominations.
Thanks for the replies.

I thought this film was hand-made for a slew of Oscar nominations. I guess it goes to show that the Academy may not be as formulaic and predictable as I'd once suspected.

Universal screwed up the film's chances by releasing it in the Summer. This boxing movie would have played better during the Fall season. Had they done that, it probably would have scored more nominations and possibly a Picture one. People forgot about this movie. Giamatti deserves his nomination and I hope he wins, but part of that reward is the Academy's way of saying "we're sorry" for snubbing him last year.
What's worse was this was the film they were banking on to bring home the gold. And they completely mishandled the release.

Well they also wanted to see if it could perform well during the summer. I agree though, you can't have it both ways. They should have kept it for the award season. It was tayler made for that.
