Hey, a fellow Winnipeger! Enjoying the weather? First big budget film or not, there's no way I could've sat through that crap...

Wow.

I came close to almost understanding this post.

Apple meet orange.

In a concert setting, the performer gets instant feedback. In a movie, the only feedback the cast and crew get are reviews and box office receipts, beyond that any clapping is purely for your gratification not the performers'.

I have never clapped at the end of a movie.
I have been to movies where people start clapping at the end though, when that happens i try to get the hell out of there quick because it is kinda awkward.

Clapping seems silly to me... do you clap after you hear a song by a favorite band on the radio?

"Wow, that episode of CSI was great, (clapclapclapclap)"

The argument isn't apples to oranges, but your reply to my quote is. The paragraph you quoted is not concerned with the honoring of the performers/filmmakers. It is referring to what the audience enjoys. If the audience enjoys applauding when George McFly knocks out Biff Tannen or Chief Brody kills Bruce, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, nor do I think it is stupid. In fact, I would like to be there when it happens.

The only time I've ever seen this happen is when the audience gave a standing ovation after the scene in Desperado where they jump over the rooftop and walk away in slow motion with the explosion going off behind them.

Other than that you feel the audience wanting to clap and cheer during the bloodbath scene in Kill Bill Volume 1, but you just knew that everone was too transfixed on the movie to clap.

Hmmm... The last time would be at the end of The Incredibles (midnight showing).

In fact, when the teaser trailer was first released for The Incredibles (which I believe was back in 2003), the audience clapped when the just the Pixar logo popped up. Besides 20th Century Fox (Star Wars) that's the only other time I've been with an audience that clapped at the logo.

I've never known anyone who actually clapped in a movie theater, but I do know a guy who once got the clap in a movie theater. I guess that's a story for another thread, though.

Well, if we're counting film festivals - Cuba Libre. If we're not counting those (b/c clapping after those isn't too rare) then it was F 9/11.

I was actually going to write a reply to this, but the above argument is so stupid it's not worth the effort.

Just reading that last part annoys me!

I've been in many theaters where the audience claps, usually for the death of the villain or for the beginning of a long-awaited movie. The last one was Freddy vs. Jason, when Jason got his second wind. You can understand that, because it was kind of exciting to see two icons go head to head.

I've never clapped or been to a theater where people clapped. What's the point? So the screen can know that it did a good job of displaying images?

Not really clapping but more cheering

Episode 1: at the pod race when Sebula crashed. Lightsaber Duel when Darth Maul was sliced in half.

Eposode 2: When Yoda's shadow 1st appeared , and during the duel.

these were both at midnight shows, I've never seen the same type of response during regular showings of any movie.

First Off I usually hate it when people clap at the end of movies. In general I think people clap to much anyways. I have only clapped after a few films, and they were all masterpieces. I just think people who clap after a general movie even if its good, are really bizarre. They are probebly the kind of people who say everything is just "great", and "Awesome!". They would clap after seeing something like My Best Friends Wedding. Hope no one mentioned that one. I didnt go back and look.

Years and Years ago at the end of Mighty Ducks 2 or 3, there were people who were clapping at the end and they were serious.
Last time I clapped was at the end of A Clockwork Orange about 2 years ago.

Way to many clap whores out there. They give there clapping to everthing. Back off the clapping in crappy-good movies. Save it til a special time, otherwise everyone around you will just think your nuts.

Sorry, but just the thought of someone doing that is hilarious.

Three applause sessions at movies I went to this year.

Fahrenheit 9/11
Shaun of the Dead
Open Water

One was sarcastic and was also booed (Open Water) and one was started by myself (Shaun).
