And advance reviews on this yet?
I can almost guarantee based on the R rating and subject matter that this will have to rely on overseas grosses to make its money back. Seems almost par for a lot of Ridley Scott/ rated R movies.
While good, Black Hawk Down barely creeped past $100 million in the U.S.

Pretty amazing that they decided to create so much of the city for real.

Interesting tidbit from this past Sunday's NY Times:
" Having spent five months on location, working from a 260-page screenplay (almost twice the usual length), Sir Ridley ended up with a movie of 3 hours 40 minutes. This version will survive on DVD, but for general release he cut the film to 2 hours 22 minutes."
This may be another instance when some of the shots in the trailer are cut from the theatrical release.

I can't believe that, even though I haven't seen the film yet, I'm already giddy for the extended release!

How do we know that what was cut wasn't just fluff?
Then again, it looks like they cut out enough time to constitute a whole other movie, so who knows.

I don't care how much my home theater experience has improved over the last several years - some things just have to be seen in a theater. Now I just wish I could go see a movie in the area w/ digital projection.

From the thread in DVD Talk, it appears the stuff cut was all related to character building and subplots.
Sounds like the theatrical version will be more of an action/war movie, while the extended will be more of a charater drive movie set during a war.

Well, I'm assuming that the 3 hour 40 minute version was not a workprint version, just not edited down.
Cause, well, you don't really get 2 hour 22 minute movies from 260 page scripts. A little disapinted by the massive cuts, but I'll be there regardless. They better release the longer cut upfront though instead of staggering its release with the theatrical one. One can hope at least.

I hope this isn't case where a movie is bashed for not having enough character development, fails at the box-office due to the negativity, and then everyone is kicking themselves for not having the full version in theaters.
This might be another case of Ridley Scott having his true vision be something that is realized a few years down the road.
