I'm surprised to hear of the positive reviews this is getting. The trailer looked awful to me -- glad to hear that may not be the case.

CHUD's review mentioned that in the FPS scene

Keep in mind, those are geek reviews. And two of them aren't exactly raves. I think the paper/online critics of merit won't be as kind. |

I think the paper/online critics of merit won't be as kind. It'll be a terrible movie, no doubt, but if it's fun for what it is, I'm there. I'm up for something cheesy and mindless right now. |
I laughed at the trailer before Serenity. But I saw the movie last night expecting the worst, and it was actually... pretty decent. Horror/sci-fi like Resident Evil like a couple people have mentioned in this thread. FPS scene looked goofy in the trailer but worked OK in the movie. Very bloody, the F word, and some fully clothed women who must have been cold. And for the record, I played a lot of Doom years ago on the PC but haven't played the Xbox version.

For a movie like this....I think they might "matter" more than the mainstream critics. |

I can smell what The Rock is cooking, and I'll bet it is tasty between 2 and 5 AM. I will watch this on dvd.

I saw the film this week, and if geek reviews are going to be positive, then so be it. But I would hate for anyone to mistake this for good cinema. IMO, it's junk, and not even "fun," which, shockingly, seems to be the free pass these reviews are handing to it. |

And the reviews are finally coming in at RT, with 29% and 20%.
The trailers look horrible, just horrible, so I doubt that it's anything I even would consider "good" bad. |
Just got in from an advance screening and wanted to toss up some
random thoughts. It wasn't horrible, but it also wasn't close to what it wanted to be (Aliens). The Rock was good for what he is in the film and doesn't grate (considering he's a main character with a lot of onscreen time). There were a few cameo type things thrown in for the game fans that got some hoots out of the crowd, such as the film opening with the Universal Logo revolving around Mars instead of the normal Earth. The FPS viewpoint segment, while I wish had looked/flowed smoother, works well where it is and for how long it lasts. They came up with a decent explanation of the origins of the beasties that went further than the standard generic "they came from hell", and with that, one in particular seemed pretty cool. Spoiler space (not sure how to apply spoiler tags) just in case One flaw was that I felt it needed more action, especially in the 1st half and in the form of more recognizable Doom creatures making appearances. Oh, it also had a twist I definately didn't expect going in. |

uhhh.. dude. I don't think anyone is going into it thinking it's great cinema. They are going for a cheap popcorn flick where shit blows up. How about you stop being so critical of things and just enjoy them for what they are? some people like it. You clearly don't. Then again, I don't remember anything lately you actually enjoyed that wasn't a serious piece or something to really think about. It's a fuck'm popcorn flick and should be taken as just exactly that. |

Okay, that in mind I have liked some movies people here have found abysmal, such as Resident Evil, Blade:Trinity, Van Helsing, and Attack of the Clones ;) . That said, should I catch this at the late show tonight or Stay? I might go with this one, as Universal has a pretty damn good track record when it comes to creature features. |
Considering I have yet to hear anything good about STAY from anyone, I'd say go for DOOM. It seems to deliver more entertainment than anything...heck, even over at Rotten Tomatoes, Doom is at 25%, while Stay is at 18%....not that those mean much, but the online outlets I read have said Stay is a trainwreck.

Not a good release week, or hell release month, in terms of movies getting released that get good reviews. It seems October is just a time to release your cheap thrill horror flicks and blow off critics.
|
Just got back from seeing this. Started slow but ended up a fun movie, if you're a Rock/ DOOM fan you should enjoy this, and if you're a FPS game fan you should definitely have fun with it before it's over :).
|
Is this film 'doomed' in the same way that "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" was doomed back in June?
|
From the sounds of it, it looks like Doom is just another one of those video game movies that I feel are borderline and split the audience between those who find it fun and entertaining or just plain dumb. I felt Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat are pretty good examples of that. I'm still planning on watching the movie, as I'm a fan of The Rock and the Doom games, as well as the fact that I enjoy mindless entertainment. However, I am slightly dissapointed that we still haven't gotten the solid video game film that offers a little more.
|
Was debating on seeing this or Stay up until a couple days ago, but considering the absolute hatred of Stay from the critics, I went with Doom. For a movie like Doom, I could care less what the critics say. But for Stay... Sounded like a complete disaster.
All in all, it was a great film for what it is. Two problems I had... First, Spoiler:
All that said, it still was an excellent movie for what it was. I'm a bit sorry the movie was basically completely taken from Doom 3, but considering the shitty graphics of Doom and Doom 2, I can understand it. The only thing I didn't get was the Arc. Spoiler:
I think this might be one of the few movies taken from a game that end up being viewed as a relatively good movie. A good portion of the crowd actually applauded at the end of the movie, which was rather shocking. I went to The Fog last week, same time, day and theatre. 90% of the crowd was under 25. I expected Doom would skew roughly the same, but instead it was probably 90% over 30... So considering that, I find the applause to be a good sign for the film. |
Sounds like you're thinking too hard, coladar.
|
Saw it. The FPS mode towards the end was worth the price of admission, just to see something like that on the big screen. The audience I was with really got into that part and applauded at several points. That said, the movie was entertaining, but I would rank it as just being alright.
IMO, if you make a video game based movie, you should find a way to incorporate some of the more memorable bad guys into the story. Resident Evil should have had the Tyrant, Tomb Raider should have had a better creature than the statue, and this movie should have at least had a CyberDemon or some of the horned/hoofed demons. I have played Doom II, and a bit of Doom III, and it seems like they decided to pretty much just adapt the third game in the series. While I admire them for making it a hard R and not taking the CGI monster route (which it looks like Slither will be doing, sadly), I didn't like the ending fight that much. I like The Rock, but Spoiler:
That said, I am glad that the performances were not abysmal and that Rock and Karl Urban both turned in decent ones. At least they made the characters interesting. I think this is a movie I will have to re-watch on DVD knowing what it is and what is/isn't in it to fully appreciate it. For now, I give it ** 1/2/****. |
Back up. The audience applauded? I hope you killed everyone in the room with your bare hands when that happened.

I’m not sure why “shit blows up” should get a free pass simply because it’s mindless. I know you subscribe to this thought process, but I don’t share it. Dumb can be great, and dumb can be bad. I found DOOM to be “big dumb” is a very bad way. If you liked it, great. Post about its merits. But trying to steamroll over a number of my posts continuously bellyaching that I don’t like junk seems hostile at this point. Besides, the IMO in my original post means IN MY OPINION. If you really don’t care for anything I say, I suggest the ignore option, or apply to become a moderator. |

Uh..dude, I have read enough of his posts to know that he doesn't. He merely looks at movies more from the business perspective than you do, and even then he has an eye for what is good "shit blows up" and what is "big and dumb." In this case I would more or less agree with him. Wasn't perfect, but I wasn't looking for heavy stuff when I went into the movie. What's worst are movies that think they're being heavy cerebreal stuff and are really just dumb, which seems to be the case with Stay. |

But hey, I'm glad you get something out of DOOM that I couldn't. |
Jackskeleton? We all know he's just a puppet for Fox. That is, if there even is a Jackskeleton.

Like it or not, Doom is on track to maybe make close to $20 million this weekend.

Besides, the IMO in my original post means IN MY OPINION. If you really don’t care for anything I say, I suggest the ignore option, or apply to become a moderator. Yes, it is your own opinion, but I find fault with it and I will point it out. Here I'm pointing out that the standards you hold in a film towards this specific film shouldn't be the same that you hold for better scripted, better filmed and fleshed out story filled films. DOOM doesn't advertise what it isn't. It lays it pretty out on the table. Then again, using that backwords logic, I could have very well said, if you weren't into that sort of thing, you should have placed doom on your ignore list or applied to be a movie director. |
Doom is teh suck.
Okay, it wasn't horrible, but it was horribly uninspired. Just think Aliens without ANY of the character development or cool dialogue or cool action scenes. The only midly interesting event was already spoiled above, apparently by The Rock himself. This movie was loud and without substance. I don't mind popcorn fare (Mortal Kombat, The Mummy Returns, Speed), but this movie was completely by the numbers and barely breathed enough to insert any amount of plot or character development into the story. It literally was like watching a videogame. Which is fine if you're playing a game, but it doesn't quite work for a movie. |
Saw it tonight. I went in with low expectations, only hoping for some fun monster-on-human killing, and vice-versa...I gotta say, I was somewhat dissapointed. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it. But quite a bit of the movie just seemed sloppily written/acted/etc...
It's funny, if they don't have any character development, people will come to message boards and say "They could have developed the characters some!"...but with this movie, I actually got a bit restless waiting for the action to begin. At one point I just thought "Enough with the talking! Please start killing people, preferably the horribly annoying guy, who Spoiler:
The FPS sequence was very cool and well done, I enjoyed this bit the most out of anything in the movie. I thought that some parts were filmed in too much darkness. When the monsters were attacking, I couldn't understand what was going on. I assumed it was something violent, but I couldn't really see it. And as far as the violence, it really wasn't as violent as I was expecting. I've seen far more violent things in theaters in recent months. This stuff might sound like I didn't enjoy the movie, but that's not the case. Like I said, I enjoyed it, it just wasn't as much fun as I was hoping for. |
So are the Cyberdemons and big spider-things in it?
|
The only 2 good things about this movie were possessed by Rosamund Pike, I'm afraid. Oh, and maybe the BFG.

You responded to my opinions not with thorough criticisms or objections, but went after me personally, actually telling me what I can or cannot post. See the difference? That's the rub here. I held DOOM to no standard. Like any film, I wanted it to work, and for me it didn't. So I posted here, like anybody else. Show me my posts where I was hoping it would be bad. Looks bad in one thing, but I wasn't wishing ill against it. I have no template of thought for every film. That would be nonsense. Again, please prove me wrong. Then again, using that backwords logic, I could have very well said, if you weren't into that sort of thing, you should have placed doom on your ignore list or applied to be a movie director. So where are your thoughts on the film, since mine do not meet your standards? |

Loved the FPS scene and the BFG... overall, an OK piece of action fluff. Worth the matinee I saw it on...but I also was pissed at The Rock for his Daily Show spoiler the night before...I'm sure a Universal suit was furious....
