His son Chris Candy, who produced the documentary – which is the opening night film at TIFF 50 tonight – penned a nice article in the Toronto Star today. The comments also have some ‘my John Candy story’ posts:

I popped down to the ‘TIFF street’ today (no movies until Sunday midnight) to kill some time downtown, and just saw this parked on the street for photo ops, outside the theater where the doc premiered last night. :thumbsup:

Forgot to mention they had the passenger seat rigged with hydraulics so it went back and forth. :)

I’d imagine this many years later that the TIFF car is a recreation and not a screen-used prop (?). Found this interesting article about the model they chose for the movie.

Yeah embarrassing would be holding back your emotions whatever they may be. I recently responded to someone else talking about crying in the embarrassing admission thread with details on all the things that make me cry. Afterwards I kind of wanted to point out that i’m not embarrassed by that but was just confirming that I too, an alarmingly straight cis man, also cry and that’s fine. Felt kind of douche to go back in to just proclaim that though so i didn’t. Instead being kind of douche here.

I well up every time I watch this scene ...




... and I imagine I'll be doing the same while I'm watching this doc. I've loved John Candy since his SCTV days, some of which were filmed here in Edmonton.

What a celebration of life. As Bill Murray said in the beginning no one had a bad thing to say about him. He was living large and it showed in every movie he was in. I like me, my wife likes me… is one of my favorite lines of dialogue of any film and it just defined such a wonderful life. Until it wasn’t. Uncle Buck, one of my all time favs, showed everything this man was about. It showed his humor, his drama, his love for life and people. John Hughes and Candy had a symbiotic relationship as they created great, tender and genuine moments. This movie had heart, comedy, emotions, great talking heads, I’m convinced Macaulay Culkin is on speed. I loved John Candy. He was the every man that you really wanted to root for. From Stripes to Home Alone to Planes, Trains and Automobiles, he was just great. Funny and sad at once. This celebrated him so very well. It couldn’t have been better. Colin Hanks deftly directed this with heart and it shows. John Candy lived a hell of a life and his downfall was that more tragic. To celebrate a life in such a way was glorious to see. Oh, I shed a tear, no doubt, but we’ll have his films and I have Stripes and Splash on tap to watch. Bravo. Great movie, great man, tragic end, but overall just a fantastic tribute to a legendary comedian.

Watched I LIKE ME last night and this morning. It was a NICE tribute to Candy with people having a lot of NICE things to say about him.

It didn't give me any real insight into who he was as a person or an actor. I liked the interviews with Mac Caulkin where talked about how he, as a child, understood Candy's heart because he was so different from Mac's father. I'm glad this movie exists as a document that people can go to as an overview remembrance of him and his career.

Maybe it's because it hit me so hard when I was young, and it has been out of the public eye, but SCTV is his greatest work. Uncle Buck and PT&A are his go-to best starring roles. But scanning his filmography, there are a lot of small parts and bad movies.

To answer the question, I guess I fall into that category where I know these people are not really part of my life, so when they go I do not miss them. And like they say, they never completely go away because we have their work to remember them and see them whenever we want.
