Ah, my specialty! :rubs hands together:
On the Beach - either the original w/Gregory Peck or the remake (also great) with Armand Assante. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Last Night - Canadian film (1998), very very good.
The Stand - good, but an epic, not really a movie. It's about 6.5 hours long
Miracle Mile - enjoyable because of its oddness. But the female main character is a dog (big time) and the love story seems completely forced.
Deep Impact - Hollywood-ized and some questionable acting, but still a good story and manages to pack some emotion as well.
Testament - 1983. There's a reason why Jane Alexander was nominated for best actress. A fantastic movie in the vein of "On the Beach." Depressing, though. Has cameos by Kevin Costner and Rebecca DeMornay. Finally comes out on DVD next month.
12 Monkeys - smart sci-fi with good performances all around (even Madeline Stowe is bearable!
)
For the record, I did not enjoy "The Last Man on Earth" and felt it was inferior to Night/Dawn/etc. (and yes I know it was made first).
Threads and The Day After are both very good apocolyptic movies but depressing as hell. (Of the two, I felt "The Day After" told a better story.)

Threads, sort of a British version of the Day After but darker in tone.

A made for TV movie back in the 70s? I think the title was Where Have All the People Gone or something like that. It starred Peter Graves.
I think he and kids were camping and then some type of solar event made everyone dead leaving their clothes and only dust within it. So the story is he and his kids are trying to go home to see if his wife is ok and along the way tried to solve what happened and escape "bad" guys from the anarchy closed by this "event".
Or something like that. It's been a long time.

Another vote for Threads, but finding a copy would probably be a challenge.

I'll second the comment that The Quiet Earth is a very underrated film, not a lot of people know it.
The Stand is one of my favorite books ever, even though I'm not a Stephen King fan, and the miniseries did an excellent job.
I'd *love* to see Special Bulletin again, but I haven't seen it since it was aired, what, 20 years ago? Anyone know if it's available anywhere?

Also, there was a great TV series several years back called WOOPS! that documented the lives of the last survivors on earth after a nuclear war. No zombies, but there was a really scary monster turkey.
Hopefully this critically acclaimed show gets released on DVD sometime in the future.

Not really centered on "the end of the world", but I like the world of Mad Max.
Good entries already mentioned, Dr. Strangelove, 12 Monkeys, Damnation Alley (ever gonna get a release on DVD??)...
If you like post-apoclyptic (sp) themes like Mad Max, try Fallout and Fallout2 on the PC, if you can find 'em... good stuff!

They've both been mentioned before, but these two are great:
Miracle Mile
Dr. Strangelove
Definately check it out, it's a movie that you will remember.

Re: Recommend a Good End of the World movie
necro bump!
I'm bumping this old-ass thread for two reasons.
1.
Yes, this. I only saw it for the first time in February of this year (I know... I know...), but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I bought the soundtrack, and have been listening to it non-stop for the last week or so.
2.
I just saw Fish Story (which came out in 2009, but has never had a proper US release) on the weekend, and absolutely loved it. It's one of those flicks that's probably better to see knowing as little as possible going in, but the one-sentence synopsis I got was along the lines of: It's about a Japanese punk band, the end of the world, and will make you feel good.
