Blade: Trinity review

Saw a screening last night and I was quite impressed. I was a huge fan of the original Blade but was very disappointed in the sequel, mainly due to the wrestling style fight scenes and the semi forced love interest angle. I was very happy to see what Goyer did with the material; his love for it really comes true. The music use is much better than the sequel (nearly as good as the original) and the action scenes are much more similar to the first - guns, swords, and fists. The film even throws in a couple of odes to the first film that will be appreciated by most Blade fans.

What surprised me about the film was that it did not end on as definitive note as the trailers made it seem it would. I have never read the comics, so I am not sure if the film follows the comic arc, but in the end
Spoiler:
Blade defeats the original vampire using a virus created by the Nightstalkers and continues fighting vampires - the film ends with the narrator (Hannibal King) saying that Blade is fighting a war, and that wars never end. Maybe the assumption is that he will use the virus mixed with Dracula's blood to kill all the vampires in the world - that is the only definitive conclusion I could see in this film.

I'm not a big fan of Parker Posey, but she actually fairly good as the bitchy villainess. Surprisingly, despite all the negative reactions from people when he was first cast, I really liked Ryan Reynolds in the role of Hannibal King. Surprisingly (thankfully) he is not superhuman in his strength, we actually comes off as kind of weak at times
Spoiler:
especially when is repeatedly captured and beaten up. Also, in his last big fight, why doesn't he just pull out a gun? Fist fights when guns are all around are something the Blade series usually avoids, so the scene seems even more unusual.
Reynolds brings a good sense of humor to the film and many of his lines got a huge reaction from the crowd I saw the film with. Blade also has some great lines - I love his response to a familiar saying to him "I can't tell you, they'll kill me." That line always annoyed me and Snipes' response is perfect.

Biel actually has a fairly small role as far as dialogue is concerned, she may have a page of lines throughout the whole movie. Overall she does fairly well with her role, but
Spoiler:
she has one of the most gratuitous shower scenes I have ever seen – it serves no purpose
.

I also liked how the villain Drake is handled, though I wish they had gone a bit more into his backstory. The plot points about Blade being troubled by media attention is also a nice touch as it brings some realism to the film. No police department ever captures a superhero, so it put a good twist on this film.

In the end, a very satisfying movie. Maybe not as good as the first, but damn close.

B+

Spoiler:
After all, how can you not like a movie with a vampire Pomeranian?

Also, I’ll be interviewing David Goyer next Monday, so if you have any questions about Blade or the new Batman film (which he is writing) just post them. I’ll try to ask as many as possible and post the responses.

Every thread about this movie seems to devolve into a conversation about the hotness of Jessica Biel.

That said, I am curious as to how HHH, the wrestler, performs in this movie.

Mmmm....I still have my issue of Gear magazine (I think that was the mag) from a few years ago. That was when she decided she wanted to get out of her contract and do those nude shots. Good times.

I don't know the first thing about wrestling, so I am not familiar with HHH, but he was quite good in this movie. He had a very small role originally, but he did so well they beefed up his role with more dialogue. He plays the assistant to Parker Posey's character and his verbal sparring with Hannibal King is entertaining. He played the "dumb strong man" nearly perfectly. His character reminded me of Frost's assistant Quinn in the first one
Spoiler:
because he ends up getting beat up quite a bit without dying, including an arrow through his skull early in the film. His big final fight is the one with King that I described earlier that involved no guns

I didn't read any spoilers, but it seems like good news!
I'm a big fan of the Blade series, even though I admit it has quite a bit of cheese here and there.

I liked the first one and found the second highly entertaining. Is there a good chance I will like this one as well?

I didn't see the second one in the theater because I didn't like the look of the previews and well, didn't have the time. When I finally saw it on DVD I thought it was quite good and wished I had seen it.
What makes this one different is that it is being released right around X-Mas and I really don't think I could bring myself to watch a gory vampire movie while there is a lot of holiday type stuff to do. Blade just doesn't seem to be the right thing to release for the Holidays IMO.

Hope it makes up for Part II. That was a waste for all involved.

I didn't realize that there was so much hate for the sequel.

Now see, I was on the flip side. I thought pretty much everyone disliked it until I saw the responses in this thread saying it was enjoyed.

Go figure? Personally, I've tried to watch the sequel twice, and both times real life events have distracted me while watching it, so I can't really say if I liked it or not.

Of the parts I did see, I just thought it was so-so. My biggest hang-up was how much bigger Snipes looked in the first one compared to the second.

Didn't its success help del Toro get Hellboy? Or at least give him a little more freedom with the project.

Regardless, i absolutely love both films so far, and looking forward to the third.

I hope New Line has a sweet trilogy box lined up in the future!

I'd probably say so. Also, about your worry about a very gory vampire movie during Christmas season, the film is not overly gory. Lots of vampires burning up and some brief bloody shots, but nothing too bad. Nothing I can think of would make the average person really want to turn away. Probably the least bloody of the trilogy as it goes more often for straight gun/fist action. Additionally, though the film is still takes itself seriously, it is definitely the funniest of the three, which overall lightens the mood, even when some gore is present.

I'd say if you're a fan of the series (or even for those who loved the first but not the second) definitely see this film. I really had a good time and was satisfied with it as an ending to the series.

And, forgot to mention before
Spoiler:
Those who have watched the deleted scenes fom the first film may remember a scene in which Frost explains what vampires would do if the humans were all turned. He had a freezer with humans that he used to harvest blood. He mentioned that they were dozens of places like that all over the world. Goyer uses that idea in nearly the exact same way in this movie except on a much larger scale - huge warehouses exist where vampires harvest blood from humans kept alive in a frozen brain dead state.

Looks like they really changed the ending.

They test screened this earlier this year (like Feb) and the ending was

Spoiler:
Blade had to kill himself to kill Dracula by mixing his blood with some drug or something like that, so he dies but Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel will continue to fight vampires. I guess Blade dying really didn't fly with test audiences so they changed it. Look for the original ending on the DVD

I'm probably in the minority, but I preferred the second to the original. I thought the original had a weak second act. Still a good movie, but I thought the second was stronger.

They could have gotten someone better that Jessica (Just Bad) Biel to do this movie. Sorry just dont like her at all. There are way better girls to go with than her.

You can put me in that category as well. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first, but the second was even better.

Good grief, man. Is there a movie out there that you DO like? I'm beginning to think you throw stuff out there as bait for other folks. Is there a way to place some people on "ignore" in these forums

Anyways, put me in the camp that loves both of them (though I do like the first a tad bit more). I have watched both several times and I am still not tired of them. I talked a few folks here at work into seeing the first one when it was theatrically released. We all had to go back for Blade II and will be there for this one, too.

Damn, it's hard not to highlight the spoilers above.....must...resist.....

The sequel seemed to have more of an emphasis on action while the first still had more of a horror aspect.
In all honesty, the only problem I had with the sequel was when Blade fought the "ninja" and the CGI made it obvious they were, well, CGI. Really took me out of the movie.

Wow, I actually really prefer that ending. It would have really finished the series properly and it makes more sense especially considering

Spoiler:
the opening narration that said something to the extent that the war against vampires began and ended with Blade. That, I thought, was to foreshadow his death. It really doesn't make too much sense with the current ending. Also, if you were interested in the full change to the ending, Dracula as a "parting gift" morphs into Blade right before he dies. So when the cops find his body they think they found Blade. He only morphs back when they are about to start an autopsy.
