Blade: Trinity review

Blade was a good movie, Blade 2 was an excellent movie (as for the fight scenes, watch it with the Snipes commentary on as he explains what moves Blade is doing and exactly why that move was chosen, it gives a much deeper appreciation for the fights in part 2). Withtout trying to post spoilers here is what Blade 3 did right:
1) The Nightstalker: They are badass and done very well, especially Hannibal King (he is funny when he needs to be, but has no problem getting physical either). Abby is a decent character who is played well by Biel, she just is not very well written, which is not the fault of the actress.
2) The action: I definitely prefer the more down to earth fight scenes of Trinity than the CGI fights of Blade 2, but Goyer just seems too unsure of what he is doing with the scenes so part 2 ends up with better fight scenes, but Trinity's aren't that bad.
Now for what Blade Trinity does wrong:
1) The Villains: Not a single villain in this movie comes close to matching Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), Reinhardt (Ron Perlman), or Nomak (Luke Goss) in either viciousness, strength of character, screen presence, or flat out being a physical threat to Blade or his partners. Not only that but, the majority of the villains are poorly played for comic relief (especially Parker Posey and Triple H), and the actors playing them (ESPECIALLY Park Posey) are not very good.
2) The Plot: I'm still not sure what the hell the plot was. A plot thread is started, then dropped just as quickly for another plot thread, which is then dropped and replaced by another plot, and so on and so forth, with almost no resolution to any of them. The "Plot" reeks of an identity crisis that was never resolved.
3) Human on Vampire Action: This is where it is hard to not give things away, but the vampires are a bunch of wimps in this movie. What happened to their super speed from Blade 1 (Remember Deacon Forst easily dodging bullets?), or their enhanced strength? I'm sorry, but after seeing the first two Blade movies, I cannot understand how simple humans are able to EASILY take down multiple vampires in hand to hand combat.
4) The Acting: Snipes is bored with Blade, or at least that was the feel I got watching this movie. Also the villains were all terrible, especially Parker Posey. I really feel sorry for Dominic Purcell (Dracula) though. You could see he was trying hard with an extremely poorly written character, and in the end it just looked pitiful. I would like to see him in something else though, because he seemed like he would be talented in a better written part.
5) The Voice Over: Sorry, but the opening voice over kills all suspense in the movie by telling you right off the bat who wins.
6) The resolution: I'm sorry, was it a resolution? Wouldn't that mean something gets resolved? Nothing in the movie gets resolved. For the final movie in the series, it felt like watching a cliffhanger ending to a TV season only to find out the show was canceled and won't be returning. Not only that but the final battle is completely anticlimatic (nothing like Blade vs Nomak) and just destorys the movie, which is made even worse by the fact that it is never made clear why Dracula is there or what the vampires are planning that Blade has to stop (as for what the humans are after, that is fully explained).
If a spinoff or another Blade movie are made, I hoep the Nightstalkers do return because they were the only truly redeeming factor of Blade Trinity, and they deserve a much better movie to star in.

Starseed,
I was thinking more about it after posting. I have to agree with what you said about the characters never really being in danger, and have to add more. The main problem was that there was no urgency. Because the vampire plot was never fully revealed, you never feel like the characters are fighting against something terrible (where as in Blade 2 they have to stop the Reapers from propagating because they multiply so quickly or in Blade 1 where they have to stop Frost from releasing the Blood God). That just severely hurts the movie even more.

I don't go to Blade movies to see a great story. The story was serviceable enough to set up Blade kick ass with his weapons and the Nightstalkers were not an annoying addition, which was a pleasant surpise (Abigail, Hannibal). The rest of the crew was really annoying though. The story in Blade 2 was pretty damn bad as well but it was enjoyeable.
I don't get what the problems with Posey and the rest of vamps were - there were the same annoying Goth vamps in the first one too.
A few of the disappoing things"

As far as Posey... maybe it was just poor acting, rather then the character itself.

I think this film suffered a lot from some of the casting choices for the bad guys, especially Domenic Purcell, but Parker Posey did what she had to work with.
The action scenes in the first half of the film are poor and uninvolving, the problem is not in the way of hyper-chaotic camerawork, but had more to do with lack of good camera angles and positioning. The editing just felt awkward, not at all smooth or seamless. Goyer's lack of directorial experience was on display in abundance in the first half. Pretty soon, the viewer gets losts in the action scenes in a confusing way. It does get a little better in the last act, barely, but again, there is still a lot of uninspired staged action sequences that don't do justice to the action pedigree of the earlier Blade films.
The plot in the beginning starts in one direction, but spirals into something less, not more. There is one sequence in the film towards the middle that just felt so awkward, like an idea that should have inspired revulsion, but, again, the scene just never has the right ominous tone, and feels like it was just put in to pile on the vampire hate. It could have easily been excised from the film with little impact on it.
But, as a comedy, Blade Trinity works during the humorous scenes, most of them feature Ryan Reynolds in them, so, for an action film, it made me laugh. Some of the dialogue in those scenes are so over-the-top and sharp and aim below the belt (both figuratively and literally at time), you can't help but laugh at the character's assessment of the situation at hand.
At times I wondered why Blade is saddled with so little in terms of dialogue, rarely managing a complete sentence in most of the scenes. Wesley Snipes might have been paid $10,000 for every word he uttered in the film, if not more (just speculating). Yes, I get that Blade is a brooder, a man of little words, but a man of action.
Jessica Biel tries to make us believe she's the more than the capable daughter of Whistler, but after a while, you just roll with the punches and just accept that she can kick some serious vampire butt.
Domenic Purcell is badly miscast as Dracula, I could never really buy into him in this role, even with the establishing scenes to make him all scary and fearsome.
So, if you're looking for some laughs, show up about an hour into the film, but if you're looking for a tight, action-packed film, you might need to look elsewhere.
I give it 2 stars or a grade of C.

I cringed when I heard David Goyer was going to direct Trinity. I was hoping i would be wrong, but from the posts it seemed like he did a bad job. Blade 1 and 2 had a great look. Based on the previews, Trinity's cinematography looks really cheap. Going to check it out tonight!

I think its funny people are critcizing the fighting in this movie - when most of the fighting in Blade 2 was crappy CGI! The only part of Blade 2 that had good real fighting was the first fight between Blade and Namok, and the very beginning and the end where Blade takes on the electrical stick guys. Other than that we are treated to a fight full of CGI that goes nowehere - the initial Nyssa and Blade fight...the fight at the very end that had a CGI Blade bouncing off walls. At least we got some real chop suey and lots of exploding vamps

But he does have a point. The action in this film was a lot better than the second which was all CGI and very noticable in every scene that I recall from it.

The only real problem i had with the CGI in Blade 2, as far as fights go, is the Blade/Nyssa/Other Guy fight in front of the lights. I didn't really mind it in other places, and in fact found the final battle between Blade and Nomak quite enjoyable.

Blade leaps from a building onto the street;
Blade and Nyssa, at the end of their fight, get very cartoony;
Nomak hops and crawls along a wall at high speed after he and Blade fight for the first time;
Blade and Nomak get a bit too cartoony in the wrestling moves in their last fight
... all of which amount to a matter of seconds total, the CG's hardly obtrusive. There's TONS of CG in that film, too. The vampires turning to ash? Looks good!
About the only other bad CG part, where CG overpowers the scene, would be the flash grenades with the, um, clouds of UV light.
Not to mention the first film, which had La Magra connecting himself back together with what looked like bubbling red jello from Lawnmower Man, or the souls of the purebloods flying out of their mouths... or the new film's awful CG in some scenes, such as Drake's morphing, or in the Blade/Drake fight at the end (where they crash into the floor and make a huge impression, for instance).
CG is a problem when it is obtrusive, yes, when it overpowers an otherwise good scene. In the first two films, however, the action wasn't bad at all. In the new film, the action is bland, unimaginative, slow, poorly shot and poorly edited. The problem is not the CG abuse, which all three films are guilty of, but the orchestration of the action.

Just watched it. I think the director is to blame for this movie. Acting was really bad, music placement was crap, Dracula looked fake as hell. Got carried away with his transitional scenes. Action scenes were okay. Police station scene was cool. Too bad the last action piece didn't totally focus on Blade, unlike the first two. If this was directed by someone who knew how to tell a story, this would have been a very entertaining flick. It felt like it wasn't complete. Overall, a grade of C+.

Dracula looked fake as hell.
Was there much of a story to tell anyways? The whole reasoning for bringing Dracula back from the big sleep seemed to be just to kill of blade. seems like a stretch to me.

- Last I heard, reapers were fake as well, only they looked more believable....ahh what the hell, you are right...if it's based on a fake character it's okay to make it look fake.

First I loved the original Blade,
Second blade 2 was okay but a little disappointing
Blade 3 has much better action and fight scenes then blade 2 but does not have the plot and villian of blade. drake, dracula, is never really givin a reason to exist in the movie other then to kill blade and vamps almost did it without him on how many occasions in the past. Purcell is okay at best and parker posey is terrible in this movie. the nightstalkers are cool but not used real well. beal has no story other then kill vamps even though her estranged father...has a problem. hannibal king is cool at times but sometimes a little over the top, he needed to be a little more manly and tough. a little love triangle between beal, posey and reynolds would have added to the plot. and humanblood donors, that should have been the main part of the plot but never gets going.

I was also disappointed by many of the possible sub-plots that weren't furthered. The pacing was downright awful, and the ending was too abrupt. Overall, it was a mediocre flick, and it delivered action and laughs.

the action was great. the villains & plot (lack thereof) sucked.
I have no idea why the vamps raised Dracula. Was it just to kill Blade? And, speaking of Dracula, this version is actually worse than the one in Van Helsing. These villains reminded me of the coyote against the roadrunner - BEEP BEEP!! When Blade and Abby opened the doors to the warehouse, I half expected to see a bunch of crates with "ACME" stamped on them.
I was very worried about the casting of Blade's sidekicks. I didn't think I could buy that chick from 7th Heaven and Van Wilder as human vamp hunters, but they were highlights in this film. I was really impressed with both.
The

overall, i enjoyed it. I loved the first, loved the 2nd even more, but the 3rd is pretty average. I can forgive lots of things with these kind of movies, but I can't forgive silly, non-menacing villains.

At work, the new running joke is "possible subplots they could use for Blade4"; the more outlandish the better, since they can't be worse than anything else they've tried.
I like the following (since they are silly, you see):
- Blade fights vampire ninjas
- Blade fights werewolves (cool ones, not Underworld ones)
- Billy Dee Williams as Blade's father!
- Blade fights a bunch of not-quite-vampire zombies (like Curtis from the first film)
- Vampires build a ROBOT BLADE to kill Blade, which bites cars, bikes etc. and sucks their gasolene/oil/whatnot
- Woody Harrelson as a competing vampire hunter in "White Men Can't Slay"
- Abigail strangles a vampire Record Company
Exec with her iPod headphones, in a scene of remarkable symbolism
- Blade fights Freddy & Jason (hey, it's all New Line)

I have no idea if anyone reads these this far into the thread but as maybe the biggest Blade fan at the forum, I've got in constant arguments here saying the original is one of the most underrated movies in the past 10 years & I liked the second one even more, here is my take.
Blade: Trinity is a god awful movie, with an even worse script, with an ever WORSE performance by the once great Snipes, BUT. . . the cast was really good.
The directing made this movie hard to watch. What made the first 2 movies stand out so much, was them being American made movies with tremendous fight sequences, maybe the best I've ever seen from the states. The action in Trinity was sooooo bad. Typcial MTV-shaky camer with quick edits zoomed in to one inch from the actors with the unbelievably loud & awful soundtrack blasting to attempt to compensate for the poor action.
- The other HUGE thing tha drove me nuts was that this movie really dragged in some spots, somethinig the first 2 never did even for one second. The script was just brutally bad.
Snipes just slept through the role & clearly did not even get into shape for the movie. He is F'n ripped for the second film & this one he wore a turtle neck the whole movie to cover up his build. He never once projected the cool he had the first 2 films.
The cast however, all around, which was my biggest concern was tremendous. Except for the dreadfully bad Dracula. I definitely liked what Reynolds brought to the screen. Biel was ripped & I could buy her kickin some ass even though it looked awful. I really enjoyed Parker Posey hamming it up as a villain & I actually liked HHH who I went in thinking for sure I would hate him.
It was a very frustrating film b/c it's just so bad & the first two I think are both brilliant action movies.
