Grudge Review

There was a lot of scared people watching this. The lady behind me kept kicking my seat in fear. People would laugh when about to be scared to hide their fear. The audience reaction to the end of the movie they felt like they had been cheated. There were a lot of screams. Defiantly worth bringing a girl and watching her scared. The dialogue was crappy and the origin left me in question. However, the surprise placements were above par than the normal Horror.

If you seen and the liked the original, you probably wont like it. I havent seen the original, but the guy behind said the original is scarier.

Yeah.......

Flick is getting what seems to be a lot of mixed praise - 2.5 out of 4 type reviews. Not surprising, granted, the original wasn't anything to write home about.

Most encouraging review I've read so far (from TVGuide.com):

Screenwriter Stephen Susco and Shimizu reconfigured not one, but three films — Shimizu's JU-ON: THE CURSE, JU-ON: THE CURSE 2 and JU-ON: THE GRUDGE — into this profoundly creepy feature, which actually betters RINGU's (1998) transformation into THE RING (2002). They cherry-pick the best bits of the JU-ON series and add Western characters, whose cultural dislocation introduces a subtle but resonant subtext without diluting the original films' fundamentally Japanese spirit. Producers Sam Raimi and Bob Tapert resisted the temptation to beef up the special effects, which remain subordinate to atmosphere, and the result is one of the flat-out creepiest films ever released by a major American studio.

I liked it alot, comparisons to the original are inevitable, especially since they released it a few months before but it is a good, scary ride, definetly has more chills than SAW this Halloween season. For those seeing this after seeing the original , dont expect anything new with the exception of them streamlining the plot.

"'The Grudge' will scare the easily susceptible, no doubt, but in trying to expand the story and cater to American acting egos, the filmmakers have left the film an even more puzzling enterprise. Much like the lukewarm 'Ring' remake experience, 'The Grudge' doesn’t learn from the original’s mistakes, but makes all new ones."

"Good news is though; I got to get my Jockeys in a twist anyways through this sit down with 'The Grudge' whacking me 'dead on' on the fear bone 85 percent of the time via its many 'boo scares'. And when it wasn’t playing that game of Polo, it was creeping me out 75 percent of the time with its grand collection of macabre imagery and horrific sounds (all about that rasping noise…brrr)."

I disagree. I've seen and loved the original. was scared the shit out of. But I loved the remake just as much. It provided slightly twisted versions of the original so it's fresh for folks who have seen the original, but also close enough to feel alright with.

Can someone post the ending in spoiler tags? I want to hear how it's different from the original's.

I know nothing of the movie, but what I saw in the trailer. From just that however, it looks like Buffy meets The Ring. Nothing there to excite me.

I accidently stumbled into a advance private sceening of this last night, and decided to stay (once I found a seat).

I haven't seen the originals, and I don't watch any trailers ever ... so that being said, I throughly enjoyed it. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be once I saw the name Sarah Michelle Gellar in the opening credits.

It's not Buffy vs the Ring, and people who saw the original need to get off their high horse and judge the movie on its own merits before blindly disparaging it without seeing it.

Sure.

Spoiler:
Instead of Rika rushing into the house to chase after her friend Mariko, it is instead Karen (Gellar) and Doug (who decides to pay a visit to the house after seeing the paper trail of detective work that his girlfriend left lying on her desk). A timeslip occurs with Peter, the professor, and we see the daisy chain of events that led him to toss himself off a building in the opening scene. As Gellar dashes out of the house after realizing the source of the curse, she passes by the entryway mirror, and feels something strange. She looks into the mirror, and...

Doug, her boyfriend, suddenly clutches her feet, gasping for air. Kayako is now crawling down from the second floor, croaking loudly and advancing on the two. Despite Karen's best efforts to pull her loved one away, the ghost grabs Doug, sucks the life clean out of him, then immediately sets her eyes on his significant other. But Karen, in a show of bravery, decides to set the house on fire, using two conveniently placed gasoline tanks (left there by another character, earlier in the film) and a lighter. Fade to black.

The last scene occurs in a hospital. Karen apparently survived the blazing inferno, and we overhear, so did the house (good job, firefighters). She's brought in to identify Doug's corpse, which lies on an examining table, underneath a white sheet. After the medical staff leaves, she thinks she sees it turn blue for a second, and black hair begins to grow at a tremendous rate from underneath the sheet. Karen senses something ominous lurking behind her, and sure enough, there's Kayako, waiting to pounce. Fade to black, roll credits.

I personally think this hokey ending isn't nearly as good as the original's, which had Rika entering a timeslip of sorts and re-living Kayako's murder at the hands of her husband Takeo. I found this to be a very harrowing denouement. I only wish the filmmakers were brave enough to duplicate it.

I saw it tonight, and I didn't really like it at all. It was creepy, and that was cool, but as a film overall it was really lacking.

I'll post a review soon.

I liked it a lot. Very creepy! The girl was very similar to the one in the Ring, but the Ring only had a handful of scenes where they came face to face with her. The girl’s face in this movie was twice as creepy as well! I had the most fun grabbing my friend whenever something startling happened. He’d jump a foot in the air every time!

Saw this today and enjoyed it. Much better than The Village and The Forgotten. Ebert's review is idiotic. I get the feeling he didn't even try to understand the story. Everything connects together well, unless he saw a differant movie than I did. Ultimately, this is not a great film, but it is a good one and has some nice scares. It's not a bad way to spend an hour and a half, and it's a good movie to see with a chick!

No, that's just my overall thoughts. My review will actually go into why I came away with that opinion.

It wasn't all bad, and I'll own the DVD. It just wasn't what it should have been, that's all.

didn't know what to expect, but overall I didn't care for it. SMG was not good, the acting in general was pretty weak. had some sweet moments, but as a whole I was unimpressed.

You guys have to see this in a packed theater. I've never heard people screaming so loud. Some people were actually leaving and then coming back in later when the scarier stuff passed. I've seen the original and this version is much more coherent (but still somewhat riddled with plot holes). But if you forget the plot and let the images take over, it's one scary movie. I jumped a few times because I just wasn't expecting it (the original didn't make me jump as much as this one). I had a ball with this movie just seeing how others were reacting. People were screaming and then laughing. When leaving the theater everybody was laughing at how scared they were and I heard lots of people saying it was one of the scariest movies they had seen. It's ain't the best movie ever. Sarah Michelle Gellar can't act, everybody was incredibly wooden, and the plot is muddled, but damn if I didn't have a great time watching it!

Definitely gonna watch this version then. I thought the original was pretty good but I got a little confused with the storyline towards the end.

Sam Raimi said the original was the scariest movie he saw his entire life, which prompted him to get the same director to translate it to the US version; whether he succeeds or not in the end isn't clear, but by and large from what it sounds like most people will be scared shitless.

And man, I hate the f'ing poster...it gives me the creeps.

I was surprised that they were able to turn Ju-On into a good film. The more I've seen or thought about Juon, the less I like it. I think at first I reviewed it as a 7/10 and later gave it a 6.5/10 - watched it again today and thought it barely deserved a 5. And here's why I don't judge a movie I haven't seen yet - I hate SMG... I think she's complete crap. I wasn't too jazzed about the original. I also think Hollywood has a spotty track record remaking foreign films. So based on that and the fact that the trailer didn't do anything for me, (if I operated like alot of people here) I would've just written this off and told people I thought it was crap even though I never saw it. Good thing I'm not like that - I saw it tonight and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was heaps better than the original (which was laughable and hardly scary). Oh, and when I say 'original' - I speak only of the first theatrical movie (3rd film overall) since I haven't seen the tv movies yet.

Anyhow - it didn't blow me away or scare me much or anything, but it was a solid film. Had I never seen such things before, I would've been scared I'm sure. Some of the performances were off, but forgiveable.

Great remake! Loved the original, loved the fresh take on the American version. The theatre I was in loved it throughout and did groan at the end, but I remember groaning at the end of the original as well, as I was trying to determine what the frig just happened...

Anybody seen Ju-On 2? Was the thumping near the end a take off on the thumping in Ju-On 2?

Thoughts?
