I hate movies like this without a decent ending. Too lazy to come up with something interesting, so we will just throw out another scare, not explain it, and then go to credits. Lame.

40 million is nothing to shake at. But expect a 50%+ decline next week, as competition has come in the form of SAW.

Heavens, if SAW is the is number one movie next week, I will just cry. What a lackluster, terribly performed film. I didn't like GRUDGE either, but it deserves more success than junk like SAW.

I think you might have touched on it briefly in the Saw thread, but is there a chance you could post why you disliked Saw so much without giving away any spoilers???

I'm foaming at the mouth for this thing to come out, but is it really that bad? Did you maybe see a rough cut?

Grudge made back its budget and promotion already and then some so even a 50% drop will be fine by the studio. I saw SAW and while I think it really is HYPED beyond belief on some sites (coupled with some truly bad scenes) it is an enjoyable movie, although there are no real scares in the movie, just stuff more along the line of what the ads were saying"How messed up is that?" SAW probably wont be no.1 just for the lack of advertising, I have not seen any ads on tv for it.

We must watch different channels then cuz I've been seeing commercials for SAW like every 5 minutes.

It's advertised a lot on the Viacom channels (VH1, MTV, Comedy Central), but little elsewhere from what I've seen. could be wrong.

Same here... And there are ads all in the subway as well.

Watched the Grudge this weekend and thought it was mildly entertaining. I wonder if people would have liked it better if there was better acting. I dont know what it is about SMG, hot and all, but not the best actress to come down the pike. And whoever was playing her boyfriend was pretty craptastic as well. I havent watched the original, but this was as good as the Ring and had its moments.

I agree with a lot of what you just said but
Spoiler:
what happens in the house at the end alone
is worth me recommending people go see it, I thought it was creepy as hell.

Even though the acting wasn't all that, it still didn't prevent me for caring about what happened to the characters.....It wasn't nowhere near that bad (but not the greatest either).

I actually liked this one quite a bit, although, I haven't seen the original. I would rate it 7 out 10.
It's true there were plot holes and poor character development but the scares were there. I felt this movie was one of the creepiest I have seen and Kayako has to be one of the scariest characters ever.
I don't really understand all the bashing of this film, next to most American horror movies this is "The Godfather" of the hooror genre. OK maybe not that good, but definitely not as bad as everyone seems to think.

I also liked this one quite a bit. I've seen better horror movies, but not any that creeped me out more. I found even scenes where I knew exactly what was coming to be very creepy as I didn't want to see what I knew was going to be shown.

Hey, the flick had flaws, but it worked very well as a horror movie.

Had some decent scares, but they got predictable and old fast.

I think it really suffered from trying to explain why the Americans were there, and how they were connected. I didn't see the original, but I feel the story just didn't come through as well as it probably did in the orignal version, but maybe I'm wrong.

The best actor I thought though was the Japanese detective. Was that Laura Palmer's mom?

You're wrong.

The Japanese version was just as murky - more so since it actually skipped around by years at a time to show connections between one victim and a kin several years down the line.

Points about SAW:

Spoiler:
The story/visual style owes everything to Argento, except the filmmaker (James Wan) is no Argento.

Everything in the film is explained. No mystery, which ruins the fun. Plus, the actors talk and explain their way through each sequence, and the cast is Danny Glover, Monica Potter, and Cary Elwes, so you don’t really want to hear these severely limited actors speak.

A couple of the shots are straight out of the film/music video school (they look ridiculous), and Wan even resorts to sped-up footage by the end of the film (Benny Hill style).

And Elwes again? Seriously, the worst performance of the year. You won’t believe your eyes and ears.

The killer revelation is a big time cheat. And although I am not a logic Nazi like some people on this board, nor do I expect much from a horror film, but the ending strains every last drop of credibility and believability right out of this already rancid picture.

Basically, it’s a 5-minute idea stretched to 100. I think it’s one of the worst films of the year.

Fin.

yeah, the original was very shakey when it came to story telling.

Most of the horror movies I've seen have little or no plot and still don't deliver any true scares. I don't see why the plot has become such an issue with this movie. Yes, there were alot of holes, but I still felt chills up my spine quite a few times. If it scares me, it's worth the price I paid.

The Japanese version was preceeded by 2 tv movies which provided (especially the 1st one) a lot of background info and insight into the characters/story. No wonder the film feels "murky" for those who haven't seen the tv movies.

No, Ju-on: The Grudge is still murky, even with seeing the original made-for-video/shot-on-video Ju-ons. I've seen all 4, and while Ju-on: The Grudge omitted some obvious things from the first two movies, it was still a bit on the murky side.

Ju-on : The Grudge 2 was also a bit murky in spots, but was a vast improvement in narrative over the original.

Bottom line. Ebert didn't like it because he found it confusing. Imagine if he saw the original, which wasn't dumbed down.

Both Ebert and Roeper said they wanted to walk out of this one... both citing that they couldn't follow what was going on and they didn't really care anyway. This one was far less confusing than Juon, and even that one wasn't too tough to follow. I think they both have ADD or something.

I'm pretty sure this was a comic book first. Seems like it would work a lot better that way (especially after reading stuff like Uzimaki and Tomie)

Anyway, I thought it sucked. Ring at least had a cool gimmick with the tape. This was just "OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE!!" revenge. Pretty lame.

I don't even know why they had to film this in Japan.

This movie scared the crap outta me. And it did it very well. Nice & creepy atmosphere. And even though every single scare was built up with no subtlety, it still scared me. Not sure why people found it hard to follow. I've seen none of the originals, read no reviews, and turned away from commercials as to not spoil anything and the story seemed pretty easy to follow once all the pieces were given.

Sorry to interrupt. Can somebody point me to the "Saw" thread which was mentioned previously? I'm having a devil of a time finding it.....
