Nice. I imagine the plot is fleshed out a little more than they are letting on ... hopefully.

My friends and I are all going to see it tomorrow after work. Can't wait! It's been too long since I've seen a real good horror film.

Saw this tonight at a preview. I thought it was visually interesting but I found it pretty dumb. Lots and lots of mind-numbing dialogue, poor acting, and muddled plot. There were some laugh at loud dialogue and it wasn't intentional. Like the Cell, imo, the only reason to really go see it is because of the art direction and visual effects.

Ebert's 1 1/2-star review here.

I had a nice conversation with seven or eight people coming down on the escalator after we all saw "Silent Hill." They wanted me to explain it to them. I said I didn't have a clue. They said, "You're supposed to be a movie critic, aren't you?" I said, "Supposed to be. But we work mostly with movies." "Yeah," said the girl in the Harley t-shirt. "I guess this was like a video game that you like had to play in order to like understand the movie."

As much I am a fan of the game, I am really big on the completeness of movies. If something like plot or dialogue drops off, it can totally ruin the experience for me. I'll still end up seeing it, but I won't keep my hopes up. A movie with tons of visuals and no concrete plot will leave me feeling let down.

Just saw it and i didnt like it, not scary but they nailed the look and feel of the silent hill games. Some great images but not scary and pretty boring in lot of places, bad dialouge especailly in the church, hated the female police officer,

It started off wierd and didnt really explain much in the movie, and ended lousy.

the things i did like was the visuals and art direction the pyriamid guy was creepy and did an amazing job with him, plus an awesome scene when he rips the skin off of someone., the lead actress wasnt bad and she was pretty hot. The town felt like silent hill. I did like that there were some moments lifted right out of the game too.

but as creepy and scary as the games were this was not scary at all. plus the music felt out of place, even though it fits in the games I thought it didnt fit in the movie.

overall very disapointed C-

Saw it. Never really played the games but upon reflection pretty much what the above guy said. Visually this movie was quite impressive, and it had some nice creepy images in it, which I do like more of in my horror movies as opposed to something jumping out and saying "boo," for a scare. Maybe if I was a gamer I would have enjoyed it more; even though I spoke to two different people who were devout fans of the game and one thought it missed the mark totally and another said it was dead on. Go figure.

Movie was ok...It left you in the dark alot, but I dont understand those who didnt "get it", it was a little out there, but I didnt find it that confusing. Very nice visually, but somethings were missing. Never played the game or have no clue what it is about. The things I liked the most were the look of the film, the music, and the sirens going off. I guess the thing that put me off the most was the length. It seemed to really drag in certain parts.

Didn't find out until after I had left that it was about two hours long. That's too much for a horror movie inspired by a game IMO. The whole subplot with Sean Bean's character seemed tacked on, and from what I have read it was, as the people in charge weren't comfortable with a horror movie featuring an all female cast.

It looks like I just about called this one on the last page:

I just wanna toss this one out there.

I've seen many people get very excited about this flick, in a big way. I think it's quite possible that this could be one of the biggest letdowns of the entire year, which is why I haven't allowed myself to get my hopes up at all.

I'm just sayin', it might not be the film that many are expecting it to be. It wouldn't shock me at all for this one to get horrible, horrible reviews (as well as, you know, being a flat out bad movie).

I hope I'm wrong though.
I'd be willing to bet that many, if not most, of the fans of the video game will find something to like about this one. However, those of us who don't care that it's based on the game (I'm a big fan of the game) and just want to see a good movie will more than likely be let down, once again. Right now it's sitting at 33% overall and 0% CotC (then again, the CotC only has two reviews posted so far).

"Silent Hill has plenty of bad acting, bad dialogue and a confusing plot -- all of which become exponentially more painful when the movie goes on forever."

-- Peter Hartlaub, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"This one is dumber than a bag of coffin nails, despite the directing hand of Christophe Gans."

-- Peter Howell, TORONTO STAR

"The problem is, Hill gets lost in the foaming desire by Gans to maintain the movement and depth of the game, leaving the action lifeless and dreadfully repetitive."

-- Brian Orndorf, EFILMCRITIC.COM

"Uwe Boll had nothing to do with this movie, but it has his general feeling of murkiness and poor plot structure."

-- Kevin Carr, 7M PICTURES

"It's like a video game - the visual effects and the setting are carefully constructed, but without that core element provided by the player: a reason to care."

-- Sean Means, SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

"While this latest video game adaptation will most likely thrill its legions of fans with its graphic demonic depictions, the overblown plot deters the film from being a true fright fest."

-- Kit Bowen, HOLLYWOOD.COM

i'm not suprised about the reviews. i figured it'd get bashed by critics whether it was good or bad. that being said rt fails yeet again. it's sad when you can guess what the critics are gonna say before the movies come out. this is why i don't put much stock in rt.

Just gotta keep in mind that most of these critics are going in it to view it as a straight up film, don't forget that. To me, that's the way it should be, at least for all of the main critics.

If you want the views of those who have played the game and/or hardcore horror fans, then you know where to look for those types of reviews I'm sure.

no, reviews are opinion. but they tend to look for things in certain films they shouldn't. it's like saying they go into every film expecting to see the godfather or la dolce vita. look at the top picks every year, it's all oscar winners or award winners. now, don't get me wrong, of course great movies deserve to be at the top, but it's like they're taking teh easy way out. horror movies should not be reviewed by critics, because it's obvious what they'll think.

That's not really fair to say.

Just go to the following link to RottenTomatoes. It's a list of 350 horror flicks with a rating of 60%+ (anything 60%+ = fresh):

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/browse...mat=&x=38&y=12

There are even a few on that list, such as Halloween, Jaws, The Evil Dead, Night of the Living Dead, and Psycho that are sitting at 100%.

There is such a thing as a flat out high quality horror movie, just as there are high quality dramas. These critics just want to see a horror movie that can be viewed as a solid film, regardless of the genre.

When they run into a horror movie, that is high quality, most critics let you know just that. I'm glad that we have both the fanboy types of horror critics as well as the straight up "normal" critics to review the horror flicks.

The Chud reviewer is familiar with horror films (heck, the site is called chud), and he's also played the games - yet he gave it a 3.5/10, so there you go.
