Personally, I loved it.
A few things tho'.
I can't decide if they was all dead or not. Part of it fits the idea they was all dead (Rose and Cybil crashing). Then another part doesn't fit in with them being dead (him smelling her perfume).
I actually prefer the idea that they was all dead and the evil was allowed to manifest itself further.
-shrugs-
Some of the CG was iffy and the acting wasn't all that, but damnit, Pyramid Head rocks.

Actually the concept of an underground coal fire is taken from the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. The working title of the movie was called "Silent Hill: Centralia." Not sure why they changed the state to WV though. I guess WV is more associated with coal than even PA is.
Centralia, Pennsylvania - a notable ghost town.

The movie played out like a living strategy guide "Left Left Right Left", Shit I forgot to duck. But that aside, was fairly entertaining, it's a high budget late night B-movie that will be looked back on favorably, just because theres some damn cool sets and scenes in it.
Good movie? No. Good for what it set out to be (a living videogame, as silly as it got)? Yes.
Lots of unintentional humor, but I was never bored (though frustrated in a few parts, namely anything having to do with a certain hotel).

To those of you who haven't played the game, here's the intro movie to the first title.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eds1i...20hill%20intro
I like how even small details like the car Rose was driving (a Jeep Liberty) is similar but slightly different to the car being driven in the intro (looks dead on like a Wrangler). Also the music should sound kind of familar (at least the opening part).
The game was really really great, the darkness portions would freak me out.

It's a PSP "game" that has lots of Silent Hill extras, like the two comics, lots of behind the scenes-type stuff from the movie, and I guess music from the movie and games too.
Pretty cool. The comics are animated, which is neat and they have both of them on there. It's also got music from all four games, game trailers, the movie trailer, and interviews with Christopher Gans and Akira Yamaoka. It also has the "fukuoku" video and a couple of others that I can't remember the name of right now. Good stuff for fans of the series. It's kind of like having all the extras on the movie DVD way before the DVD comes out. I paid too much for it ($28.95) but it's only supposed to be $19.99

You know, I read this whole thread after seeing Silent Hill the other night and you guys provided some great info and theories. I'm also getting the urge to see it again in the theaters. I would love to see Pyramid Head and that Cop chick again.
Knowing the theories behind what Pyramid Head represents in the game put a whole meaning to what he did to that girl in the movie. I remember that when he

Wow. What a HUGE disappointment. A few weeks ago, I suffered through Night Watch because a friend recommended it. I hated it and let him know. So I was a little apprehensive when the same friend told me I had to see Silent Hill. So I asked him, just to be sure "this isn't anything like Night Watch is it?"
He replied "What do you mean?"
So I just flat out asked "well, just tell me a few things. First off, the movie isn't all style and no substance is it? I mean, like some cool cinematography and effects, but an incoherent story, laughable dialogue, horrible acting, plot threads that come out of nowhere and make little to no sense. Long dragged out scenes of people looking horrified and running away from something that is never explained? Lots of action sequences that look like they were shot by a blind man with ADHD? An utter and complete lack of any cool gore, outside of a few CG scenes that are dimly lit and end up being too little too late? Not to mention, some of the worst acting put to film in recent memory...and an ending that is not only anticlimactic, but totally tacked on and nonsensical? Just tell me that the movie doesn't have those elements, and I'll trust you and go and see it."
My friend of course, laughing said "Oh hell no, this is really a great horror pic, you'll love it!"
What an asshole. My friend is dead to me. This movie was everything I had hoped it was not. I am still stunned at how bad it was, and how utterly LONG the movie was. People at my screening seemed just as perplexed afterwards. There have been many threads where I've complained about the injustice of the Box Office and the general public, but after having to suffer through this film that made over 20mil on the weekend, and having recently seen SLITHER, a GREAT horror flick that NOBODY SAW, it just makes me want to grab the public by the ears and shake some sense into them. Frustrating.
So my overall opinion of the film is not good...I wasn't a fan of the videogames, but if that was a prerequisite for understanding the movie, then I'd still have the same LOW opinion of it. A complete and utter waste of time and Gans did nothing to help his career move forward IMO. (thought BOTW was good, but it could have been a fluke).

I wanted to see Slither, but was unable to for the two weeks it played. I'm hoping, at the very least, the dollar theater gets it.
That said, you shouldn't ditch people for having bad taste in movies. But it's your call, I'd be more of a loner if I did that. That said, Silent Hill was a flat out B-movie with a few inspired moments and a fairly effective final moment. The acting, dialogue, horrible plot progression (it was watching somebody play a game, not a movie), and overall filmmaking wasn't the hottest, but it had its charm. But man, whoever said "The only thing we used CG on was for the fog" was completely full of shit. And the witch trial ending was just.. bad. Also, I never played more than 20 minutes of the game, but understood the movie just fine, and yes, the plot for the most part was downright idiotic.
Oh, and yeah, I looked at my phone about 1 hour in and groaned that there was still an hour left.

WOW.....that was what the word trippy was created for.
I played the first game way back when PS1 was the shiznit. Loved the game. Had ta see the movie.
Had a Hellraiser feel to me. (I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if that was redundant.)
I enjoyed it for what it was. A 'trippy' lil flick that fans of the game would enjoy. Amazed it did so well. Kinda sends Hollywood the 'make more R rated horror' hint I hope.

Just saw this yesterday. I'm undecided as to how I feel about it. I think the style of the movie was pretty good and close to the game. I never played them, but know of them. The acting was pretty weak and special effects were nothing to crow about. But, the story was interesting and kept my attention. I think I need to watch it again when it comes out on DVD to truly get an opinion on it.

You're welcome. When I was a kid I remember driving there with my family to look around. It's about an hour or so from where I grew up. I don't remember much except there is not much left there to see anymore. Pretty much what I remember is what that arial photo looks like on the wikipedia site.

I thought this movies was a pretty decent horror movie and have already seen it twice this past week. I'd even be willing to see it again this weekend, which ranks it way above most of the horror movies that I've seen this past year.
Oh, and I never played the game.

I saw this tonight. I haven't seen a horror movie probably since The Sixth Sense but since this was the guy that did Brotherhood of the Wolf I thought I'd check it out.
I thought it was alright. The atmosphere and style was pretty cool. I thought it was good until the end where it became super cheesy and almost insulting.
It was alright and when I say it was alright I mean it was alright in a mainstream public type of way. I apologize if I sound elitist but this movie made me remember why I don't like 90% of the movies released every year.
I also thought it was quite obvious that

I saw it again this afternoon, with parts of this thread in mind, and I am still in the camp of "they're not dead." At this particular screening, the credits were greeted with a mixture of clapping and "that wuz sum stupid shit, yo" (direct quote by the way).
I liked the movie and like it still after the second viewing, my only issue is that the explanation is overly long. This movie couldn't get through the Hollywood machine and give us no explanation, but they gave us too much. She was good/they burned her/she's mad, now move on with the Super 8 home movie version. (I say only issues because I ignored all the Sean Bean stuff)
I liked the church scene even more this time around, I think it just shocked me the first time I saw it, but this time around I appreciated its sickness, right down the the overly evil organ music, the movie is about a hell of the little girls making, right?

I saw it tonight and liked it for the most part .... but it just got too corney from the explanation till the end .... I would have rather they figured out the secrets themselves I guess kinda like in the ring. The first half or so was really scarey though, the monsters and all.. they did a real good job on all that stuff
