I saw the SH poster awhile back and instantly thought the girl looks like Alexis Bledel ( Gilmore Girls ) in her Chilton uniform with her mouth blurred-out. I saw the movie today, and thought it was good visually and atmospherically. I also thought it was kind of boring, and not very scary.

P.S. Another for Pyramid Head.

Hopefully the sequel (and if it does well, there will be a sequel since everyone involved wants to do one) will be better now that the whole ridiculous "origin of Silent Hill" story has been told.

LOS ANGELES - A real scary movie bumped off the spoof variety at the box office. Sony's fright flick "Silent Hill," set in an eerie ghost town, debuted with $20.2 million.

It took over the top spot from the Weinstein Co. comedy "Scary Movie 4," which slipped to No. 2 with $17 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The White House assassination tale "The Sentinel," a 20th Century Fox thriller starring
Michael Douglas,
Kiefer Sutherland and
Eva Longoria, opened in third place with $14.65 million.

The weekend's other new major debut, Universal's George W. Bush-"American Idol" parody "American Dreamz" featuring
Dennis Quaid and
Hugh Grant, debuted a weak No. 8 with $3.7 million.

After two weekends in limited release,
Jennifer Aniston's comic drama "Friends With Money" expanded nationwide and came in at No. 10 with $3.55 million. Aniston plays a down-on-her-luck housecleaner with three well-to-do pals (
Frances McDormand,
Catherine Keener and
Joan Cusack).

Lifted by box-office leaders that included 20th Century Fox's animated hit "Ice Age: The Meltdown" at No. 4 with $12.8 million, Hollywood revenues rose for the fifth-straight weekend.

The top-12 movies took in $100.4 million, up 22 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Interpreter" debuted at No. 1 with $22.8 million.

After a prolonged dry spell in 2005, when movie attendance fell 8 percent, Hollywood is on solid footing this year heading into a potentially big summer. A surge over the past month has attendance running 4 percent ahead of last year's, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"This is exactly where the industry wants to be as we approach the biggest moviegoing season of the year," Dergarabedian said. "It's night and day from where we were last year."

The industry has a stronger early-summer lineup this time compared to last year, when Hollywood got off to a slow start with "Kingdom of Heaven," "Kicking and Screaming" and "Monster-in-Law."

Coming over the first three weekends this May are
Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible III,"
Tom Hanks and
Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code," the animated comedy "Over the Hedge" and "Poseidon," a remake of "The Poseidon Adventure."

"Not only has the box office continued to be up, and up significantly the last several weeks, but we're headed into what looks to be a terrific May," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, which is releasing "The Da Vinci Code."

Sony scored its fourth No. 1 opening of the year with "Silent Hill," starring
Radha Mitchell as a mom hunting for her ailing daughter in a mysterious town. Along with "Silent Hill," two of Sony's other top debuts were horror movies that were not shown to critics beforehand, part of a growing trend where studios skip critic screenings when they expect bad reviews.

Two-thirds of the audience for "Silent Hill" was under 25, an age group less likely to pay attention to reviews, and the horror genre tends to pull in fans over opening weekend no matter what the critics say.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.

Caught it at a matinee today. I vividly remember playing the original Silent Hill on the PSX when it first came out and a few years later I got a chance to play Silent Hill 2 on the XBox. With that in mind, the movie was good but I think it tried to do too much. The whole
I dug all of the subtle nods to the games (the music, some of the scenes shot for shot were just like the games). Overall it was visually very strong but I feel they made it too long and lost my interest by trying to explain alot. Overall I'd say it was worth seeing theatrically as the sound mix was very good. I was kinda bummed though that the imps didn't have knives like they did in the first game though

Woah, you're not kidding! A sealed copy of the Greatest Hits version of SH1 is selling for $60 with an hour left to go!! Mint non-GH copies seem to selling for about the same. I'd sell mine while the market's riding high, but now I want to play it again too.

Hahahha...i felt like playing it too....but at this price...i think i can wait till the price cools down and play it later.

Considering Sean Bean's character was tacked on to please the studios, I think it would be a wonderful turning of the tables to give him and Rose a really cool backstory that would make him a credible main character for the second and also give Pryamid Head the significance he had in the video game.



Also, I subscribe more to Joe Molotov's interpretation, especially because Gans in an interview (posted in this thread, I believe), mentions that Rose goes unconscious after the car accident, and is transported to the nightmare Silent Hill.

I agree 100% with your second spoiler, Suprmallet (and by extension, Joe Molotov's as well). In fact, I had posted something similar earlier today, but my browser crashed and I said heck with it. But your take is right on - having played through all of the games several times, and read extensively other folks interpretations of the Silent Hill mythology, I think I have a pretty good grasp on how the game designers intended us to understand Silent Hill. And I definitely believe the filmmakers' intentions were consistent with that, so the interpretation you have spelled out seems right on to me (and was definitely how I interpreted the plot and ending of the film).

I'm a big fan of the game, but still haven't seen the movie. I heard that as of today it’s #1 at the Box Office. Anyone seen or have this: http://www.konami.com/silenthill/she/ ? It's a PSP "game" that has lots of Silent Hill extras, like the two comics, lots of behind the scenes-type stuff from the movie, and I guess music from the movie and games too.

I am not certain if I saw these in this movie or not, but I can't help but think I did. It seems that when Rose is in the school she sees pictures of saints on a wall. I distinctly remember the last two being Joan of Arc with the word "Duty" written below it and the other one seeming to be the Virgin Mary with the word "Love" written below. It wasn't anything major, just a "blink and you'll miss it" type thing.
If these were the images I saw in this movie, that could actually be interpreted as symbols for Rose and the Cop lady. It was love driving Rose, and duty driving the Cop. Again, maybe it's just me seeing or remembering something that wasn't there, but if it was, it adds more to the whole symbolic thing.

Those pictures actually creeped me out.

I just got back from this movie, very creepy and messed up images. But I was suprised at how bad some of the dialogue was considering how well done the other aspects of the movie were.

I loved the creatures though, and although I've never played the games, I understood and followed the story fine, even though its apparent the ending is up for debate.

Though to tell you the truth, I dunno what was more disturbing, the movie itself, or the fact that I saw a man bring his two young kids with him, who couldn't have been older than 4-5. And also a family with an infant walked in midway through the flick. Gotta love going to the theaters every once and while, its an experience in how mind-blowingly dumb people can be.

Steve: you pretty much summed up why I choose to see certain things first showing available wheter it be matinee or midnight showing. You're almost guaranteed to get an audience of people who know what's going on and won't pull anything stupid like bringing kids.
I remember meeting a kid over this past summer who wanted to go see The Devil's Rejects, and he couldn't have been more than eight years old! Apparently he had actually seen the Chainsaw Massacre remake, so I guess parents don't care what their kids watch anymore as long as it keeps them quiet.

Saw it today at a 4:15 showing. I had the whole back row to myself then I'll be damned if a Family of four with Mom , Dad, and two teens didn't sit one seat away from me in "my" row. Of course the Boy(15 or 16) who sat nearest to me had to be "chatty'. BASTARD! Then 3 teens(boy and 2 girls) sat in the row ahead of me and naturally the two bitches were talking THROUGH THE WHOLE MOVIE. I mean how can you watch an intense flick like this and get totally into it with 2 bitches running their mouths and not even trying to lower their voices? Sigh--- I really hate people...


Anyway, I liked the movie although I couldn't get into the games. I would like to get more into the Mythos of the Silent Hill World.

I'll have to check that out.
