Kung Fu Hustle!

I just saw this movie, and it was okay. Once was enough though. It delivers enough action for a recommendation, but any time there wasn't a fight I was yawning and rolling my eyes and thinking about what I would miss if I just stopped watching. For the few moments when the film had to move the story along, it felt tedious and boring.
This movie didn't excite me to the point of giddiness by a long shot. As usual, overhyped.

just saw this and thought it was great. it was really fun, kind of like watching a live action cartoon. looses most of the humor towards the end, which sucks, but its totally worth checking out if you have the chance.

Anyone else notice that the trailer that is accessable from the film's homepage proper is different than the one on the intro page (English Narrator, subtitled dialogue)?

Just saw a commercial for a special movie marathon Comedy Central will show on Sunday, hosted by Stephen Chow! It will be a series of interstitials shown during the commercial breaks, with clips from the film plus little comic riffs from Chow himself.
From http://www.laweekly.com/ink/05/18/film-chute.php
Also, here's a "Who’s who of Kung Fu Hustle" article:

From http://www.laweekly.com/ink/05/18/film-chute.php
So if you tune in to Comedy Central on March 27, you will hear: “I’m Stephen Chow, and you’re watching Savior Sunday on Comedy Central. Go see my new film Kung Fu Hustle, or I’ll kick your ass.”

So, if it's rated R, why digitally remove the copious amount of blood in a few scenes?

1)the mpaa are prudes and threatened with an NC-17
or
2)Chow didn't like the scenes looked.
I wonder if indeed this will be a full wide 1500 plus theaters.

Overall though, I don't think the reduced blood in those scenes will ruin most people's enjoyment.
A final note: The Landlord and Landlady's names are only Paris and Helen of Troy in the English translation. They actually name themselves after a famous historical Chinese couple. I guess the translator tried to pick a Western parallel.

Digitally removing the blook reduces a couple of the best gags in the movie. It already has an "R" rating. I find it difficult to believe that these scenes would cause the movie to be NC-17. There has been much worse in R movies. One day the MPAA will make sense but probably not.

I kind of felt the same the first time I watched it (by myself), but...
Hustle gets better each time I watch it.
A lot of my friends want to see it, but they can't borrow it because it won't play in their dvd players, so I just have them over and watch it with them - I've seen it 6 times already, and not only has it not gotten old, it feels even fresher, moves faster, and is even more fun (there's a lot of little details I notice each time I watch it) - I now like it even better than Shaolin Soccer.
It helps immensely to watch it with a large group of people, as it's a lot more fun this way.

As for the rating -
I'm guessing that they made those cuts themselves before submitting it, hoping for a PG-13, but ending up with an R, they didn't want to go back and reinsert those cuts.

It's silly and sure as hell great at the same time. Even with the edits, it's still very enjoyable and there is a lot of jaw dropping fights in it to warrent the cost of admission if you ask me.
To even relate this to Kung Pow....
please don't, that's an insult to this film which has the heart in the right place and the out of this world action that makes it very damn entertaining to watch.

Martial Arts Star Yuen Qiu Arrested
1 hour, 37 minutes ago
HONG KONG - Martial arts star Yuen Qiu, who plays a landlady in "Kung Fu Hustle," was arrested in an underground mahjong parlor and fined for illegal gambling, a newspaper reported.
Yuen was arrested March 31 along with 10 other women and two men, the Apple Daily reported Wednesday. She pleaded guilty to illegal gambling on April 1 and was fined $510, the report said.
"She knows she did something wrong," Apple Daily quoted an unidentified spokesman at Yuen's management agency as saying.
Police spokeswoman Anita Chow confirmed the raid but didn't provide names of those arrested. Court spokesman Mackenzie Mak said he didn't have any information on Yuen's case.
A contact number for Yuen wasn't immediately available.
Yuen, who played a student who rescues Roger Moore in the 1974 James Bond movie "The Man With the Golden Gun,"
is enjoying a career comeback after appearing in Stephen Chow's film.
Her performance as a no-nonsense landlady who's secretly a kung fu master won her a nomination for best actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
