JAWS re-release

Re: JAWS re-release
I just got back from seeing it. Never saw it on the big screen and this was the first IMAX presentation. It’s probably been many years since I saw it. Maybe as far back as the DVD days. The movie looks phenomenal in IMAX. I know there are some here who don’t give a crap about the theater experience, but this is something that really exemplifies why movie theaters are still a great way to see movies.
If there is such a thing as a “perfect” movie this might be it. Action, suspense, realism in that it was shot practically.
A great fucking movie.

Unless you are a big 3D guy, go with the IMAX. I saw it on our screen a few years ago for the last rerelease, and it looked and sounded phenomenal.

Re: JAWS re-release
We caught a local screening at a smaller theater. One of the best movies of all time. So hard to find flaws. The theater experience wasn’t bad but I’m at the point where watching at home works for me. Either way, glad they are releasing these classics like this.

I have two A-List slots left, and I think I'll be doing Prince Sign o the Times IMAX this afternoon for one of them, so now I need to decide on Jaws or Batman Returns tomorrow.

If you have never seen it on the big screen, I suggest an IMAX viewing.
3D if you've seen it a number of times on the big screen, just for something different that's beautiful and enhances your experience because you don't need to follow the story that closely.

On the flip side, I saw Titanic in 3D during its theatrical re-release and it was one of the best 3D experiences I’ve ever had. It added so much depth to so many shots!

Nice to see the rerelease made some money this weekend!

Re: JAWS re-release
While far from my favorite Spielberg movie, my dad and I just had a nice afternoon seeing this at the Kentucky Theatre. The box office and lobby were decked out with inflatable sharks and they had a Narragansett beer standee that you could put your face inside and pose as Quint for photo ops. They even printed up some great souvenir tickets... and the price at the door was only $6.14.

Just got back from an IMAX showing, first time as well seeing it on the big screen! (I was sad to miss the release a few years ago but figured there was a good chance they'd do something for the 50th) They've kept this nicely restored, as you'd expect with one of the studio's crown jewels. I kept looking around at all the background details as well, I'd never noticed the shooting stars. Just a masterclass in editing and cinematography - the background/foreground compositions are still some of the all time best.
Loving this trend of anniversary releases, especially to help fill in the slower months - up next, Apollo 13!

Re: JAWS re-release
I didn't go see the Jaws re-release, but I did watch Jaws: The Revenge for the first time ever tonight. No surprise, it was really, really bad.
That said, no way is it worse than Jaws 3. Jaws 3 is clearly just a crass 3d cash-in and is borderline unwatchable. I guess The Revenge loses points because it seems to be trying to be a real movie and failing so spectacularly, but at least it's good for a laugh. And for all the static Michael Caine gets for being in the movie, I thought he was just fine. It's not his fault everything around him is so terrible.
Anyway, the original is pretty good. I bet it looks nice in IMAX.

Re: JAWS re-release
Watched Jaws@50 last week. It was decent. Fun seeing a bunch of big name Hollywood insiders get interviewed but it's mostly just a puff piece. The Shark is Still Working still reigns supreme for Jaws documentaries. I can't imagine I'd ever rewatch it, unlike TSiSW.

It appears IMAX edited the intro slightly at 1:01 to remove his mentions of "4DX, 3D and standard formats". I was seeing it in standard and all versions got namechecked.

Re: JAWS re-release
No intro for me, unless it was before the trailers. No IMAX posters either, but it seems my local theater always puts them out after the first weekend.
Looked amazing on IMAX. One of the things I love about old (1970s) movies is the desire to make conversations overlapping and realistic. This left the sound mix a little troubling for me, as I could not pick out primary dialogue in several scenes.
Adding this to my list of "always see on a big screen when it is out" list, along with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones movies.

Here in Los Angeles, they just had a screening of CEot3K in 70mm a couple weeks ago. Maybe Sony or Fandango will screen it for its 50th in 2 years. It already had a 4K restoration for its 40th though.

Looked it up . . . I guess it may have been. It had two-day release last year, but I know I didn't see it last year.
Would love to see a 70mm run . . . There is a theater that does the 70mm runs 3 hours away, but I have never bit the bullet and drove to Indy.

Saw it in 3D 4DX. it was fun. the 3d was pretty good. I saw it in IMAX 2 years ago and would probably stick to IMAX with future viewings (when possible)

Monday Movie Club showing was great. Boo's every time the mayor showed up, singing along with the boys on the boat, and some passable audience jokes ("That's a great white!" when Hooper mentions bringing white and red wine being the highlight). My daughter enjoyed it about as much as an 11 year old can. She was amazed by the shooting star and clapped when Hooper told off the mayor so basically everything hit.

I bought clip on 3D shades for my glasses and tried them out this. An absolute upgrade over the disposables. This ended up being one of the best post-conversions I’ve seen and remains a masterpiece. Turnout for my screening was a little sad with only 7 total.

Re: JAWS re-release
There were a couple of times I'd get put off by the film not taking up the entire screen, but those quickly faded when I refocused on how huge the image still was

Re: JAWS re-release
My kids, 8 and 12, have heard me rave about this movie for years and wanted to join me for the rerelease. They have seen all the Jurassic Park movies so I figured they would be fine. I forgot how scary that Ben Gardner scene is, especially going from low music to that loud stringed instrument when you see the head. Both boys damn near jumped to the roof and the 8 year old looked at me like "what have you done to me". We were sitting in the back away from others so I gave them a few more warnings as things were coming up, but they ultimately enjoyed it and have been telling all their friends about it.
For me, Jaws is a top 3 movie so it was awesome to finally get to see it on the big screen.

Re: JAWS re-release
If I was still young, I probably would have been freaked out at the scene where Jaws got Quint, chomped on his legs and stomach. And then you could see him in pain with the blood coming out of his mouth. That was an intense sequence, especially for a PG movie.
