Here are the #'s for Saturday

IMO yes, I think people were just stupid if they didn't think Passion of the Christ wasn't going to do what it did. A controversial film, with one of the biggest stars in the world directing & backing it, with an already built in fan base of millions upon millions of people. I cannot understand why everyone is so amazed at the amount of money it made. It's opening weekend was exactly what it should have been. Dodgeball is much more of surprise considering it didn't have any major stars going up agains a movie by Spieldberg, starring Hanks, that has been getting critical ravings reviews.

Looks like Around the World is the next Alamo. NOt a very good opening weekend at all.

I doubt many people even knew Spielberg directed it or what it was even about. And I hardly think movie reviews have any weight to the general public. Look at Scooby Doo which got terrible reviews, then look at Iron Giant which got rave reviews!

Wow Shrek 2 is now # 6 all time.

I find it hard to feel sorry for some of these films or the process in general......the industry needs to start rethinking the whole release process. They save all their popcorn flicks for this small summer window where the crowding becomes worse with each passing year. Release some of these movies in April or September and they could conceivably gross twice as much money, but release them with cornerstone projects like Spidey 2 and Harry Potter 3 and Shrek 2 and poof, they tank profit-wise. I watch movies year round, not just in the summertime!

This one is beyond me...... I was majorly disappointed. Anybody remember when there was all the hullaballoo over Meyers even agreeing to do the first one, trying to get another film done as part of the deal? They had to coax him into doing Shrek and now he's making mountains of money off what has become a franchise. I loved the Wayne's World and the Austin movies and yup, I liked the first Shrek movie but now we get The Cat In The Hat and Shrek 2.......people pan Carrey and Sandler but at least they're still funny. 6th all time? GEEZ. Why????? I know I know, the first struck a chord with both kids and adults and kid movies in the summer is like baseball and hot dogs.......but 6th all time?

what critical raving reviews? Last I checked, it's been getting pretty limp reviews (Especially for a Spielberg/Hanks flick)

edit: on a second note, Dodgeball and The Terminal are actually neck and neck in terms of reviews.

I thought the hullabaloo was over the fact that the part was Chris Farley's.

Disney didn't finance 80 DAYS, they just paid a distribution fee.

I'm not saying it will be profitable, but Disney DID NOT kick in the 110 million dollar budget figure that Box Office Mojo reported. Let's not get crazy here...

Suuuuuuuuuuuuure....you KNEW Passion was going to make 125 million over it's opening weekend and pull in almost 400 million in the US. Even though NO ONE predicted even close to those numbers, and two months prior many were saying the thing would bomb. You also knew Titanic would become the biggest movie ever huh...suuuure... But hey hindsight...20-20. :p

Nonetheless, regardless of that, I don't see how this is that incredible. Dodgeball is a bonafide success, but how a amusing comedy making in the end perhaps 100 million dollars at most is remarkable is beyond me. I seem to recall Ben Stiller hacving another comedy in this vein open to 28 million and gross 90 million dollars at the box office. Considering this ain't gonna do much better really, I don't see THAT remarkable going on save for a well played comedy hit.


Nonetheless, the box office seems to be fairly quiet for the next couple weeks until Spiderman hits. Then I think we're going to see...quite possibly even bigger numbers than Shrek. That'll be interesting to see.

IMDB (although not always accurate) has Walt Disney Pictures as one of the production companies, the other 2 companies don't look like much of anything:

Actually, yes, I said before it opened that I thought Passion would having the largest opening weekend in movie history, I even posted in somewhere here & people flamed me for thinking that. Like I said, I think people, critics, experts, were stupid for thinking it wasn't going to be that big. Never had any thoughts about titanic, still haven't seen it.

I'm surprised that Riddick actually pulled in what it did over the weekend.

I think this film suits the fall, darker season, Riddick I think was watered down a bit for the summer, marketed as such, it feels like a fall release.

And I don't think it was a great date anyway for it to be released.

I hope it does 60 million at least, 70 million wishful thinking, and much better world wide, and big on dvd.

I think they could of done without a big budget for this film, until it was profitable, scale it down, make it different, just more risky now for a sequel.

It didn't help Riddick it was playing on 1000 screens less then Potter on its opening weekend, if it had those 1000 screens extra, it would of been no 1 last week, and bit better this week. 1000 screens less and more competition did hurt it.

As of today, I have seen eight of the films in this weekend's top ten. I am happy that I am a teenager who has no time on his hands other than to go to the movies so I can say I have seen more films currently playing in theaters than most of the DVD Talk population.

Thoughts About This Weekend:
1. I hope Dodgeball and The Terminal both have legs in the weeks to come.
2. It's sad that Harry Potter might top out under $250 million (the fourth one will probably do less).
3. Shrek 2's drop might be less than of what it was this weekend.
4. Everything else will probably be history as of next weekend.

Next Week:
White Chicks = Wayans Brothers do a PG-13 gross-out comedy that will guarantee them big money from the teenage movie going audience. This film WILL BE NUMBER ONE at the box office next weekend, I guarantee that. I PREDICT OVER A $50 MILLION WEEKEND. If Scary Movie 3 can do it, so can this film.

Fahrenheit 9/11 might become one of the highest grossing documentaries ever. I predict that it might make over $30 million total at the box office. :)

The Notebook will be dead on arrival and Two Brothers won't even last two days, let alone two weeks, at the box office.

Having seen WHITE CHICKS, 50 million seems a little high, but not impossible. The Wednesday opening will help them.

NOTEBOOK has done very well with test audiences and WOM screenings... I wouldn't call it dead just yet.

And TWO BROTHERS is a great family film. If there was any justice in the world, this film will find an audience. I recommend it highly to everybody here.
