I also didn't like Rushmore even though it had been recommended to me by several people. Oddly enough i love the Royal Tan. but didn't like Rushmore.

Donnie Darko
Rushmore
Dead Alive

OldBoy 06-13-04 01:01 PM

"Near Dark"

Didn't think it was a good vampire movie, horror movie or any movie at all.

I think Boondock Saints is the most overrated film by my peers. it seems every teenager loves that movie. It's good, sure, but I think anyone that ranks that in their top 5 should see more movies.

On a side note, I hate these kinds of threads. I always wind up losing some respect for a poster. Rivall11 for instance, I usually agree with him, but I see him mention Rushmore, and it's like a shot to the heart. Oh well, I guess that's just the nature of opinions. :)

don't lose respect for me my friend - Wes is a brilliant director, no doubt about it (but of course this isn't all about Wes), but I can't stand Rushmore, never have and never will.

I knew someone would say something to me - but hey, that's just how it goes, how do you think us Tarantino buffs (hey, maybe you're one of us to) feel everytime we start a thread trying to discuss news about him or whatever else and then some cheeseball comes in and says "this isn't Taratinos movie" - while this has nothing to do about my opinion on Rushmore, I'm just trying to let you know that I know how it feels.

Donnie Darko - God this movie sucked.

I never got the humor in Dead Alive. I love Evil Dead II. One of my friends was a huge cult-movie enthusiast. I used to watch a lot of off-the-wall stuff with him.. some I liked, some I didn't. He raved about Dead Alive. When I watched it, I didn't find it funny at all. I thought it was pretty stupid and boring. There some good one-liners, etc, but for the most part I hated the movie.

I don't lose respect for people, but sometimes I don't like reading people's trashings of movies I love.

But then, I just turn around and trash their favorite movies. ;)

im gonna be burned at the stack for this, but i really didn't find EVIL DEAD 2 that great at all. i haven't seen the 3rd yet but i really enjoyed the first one. but the second... i dunno. just wasn't that good. got annoying

Don't feel too bad.

Alot of people would agree with you on this one.

However, I forgot where I buried them....

EVIL DEAD 2 IS A HOLY WORK.

Calculon 06-13-04 09:48 PM

1. Escape from New York

2. 'Dead Alive' was easily the worst movie I've seen in years (and I'm a PJ fan).

Best movie ever.

Terrell 06-13-04 10:04 PM

This one will most definitely get me burned at the stake, but I'd say without a doubt, Night of the Living Dead is highly overrated. Not only is it not scary in the least, but the acting is the absolute worst I've ever seen. The makeup isn't all that good. The story isn't all that good either. Hell, I thought the '90 remake was better. It certainly had better acting and makeup effects. I aslo found it to be slightly more frightening as well.

Then again, that's just my opinion. Get the gasoline ready! ;)

I actually somewhat agree with you here. NotLD is a "horror classic" due solely to its influence on the genre. It really has little else going for it. Like you said, the makeup and acting suck, and it's not scary.

But then you must consider that if NotLD had never been made, neither would some of the greatest horror movies ever. That fact alone makes it a pretty ok flick in my book.

Giantrobo 06-13-04 10:38 PM

The Ginger Snaps series.

pretty corny stuff

Numanoid 06-13-04 11:16 PM

This whole discussion is rather silly. Cult Classics, by definition, appeal to only a select group (you know, the "cult" part). Which naturally means that the majority will not be big fans. If you consider one to be "overrated", I guess that means you just don't happen to be in that particular cult.

Groucho 06-13-04 11:19 PM

Numanoid pretty much summed it up. If anything, the films are UNDERrated by the majority.

videodrome 06-13-04 11:28 PM

Liquid Sky (though Ann Carlisle is fantastic)and Cafe Flesh.

shaggy 06-14-04 12:10 AM

Wow this thread is killing me. You guys are picking overrated films, and it reads like my top 10 list. I love Rushmore, Donnie Darko , Ginger Snaps, Full Metal Jacket, Holy Grail, and Evil Dead 2.

I do agree NOTLD is overrated. Dawn of the Dead is way better.

Right but the thread is for fans of cult classics and people who know which films fall into the category regardless of which "cult" they come from.
