well, filmmaking is not exactly his only profession anyway, so I think Houseof1000's box office take is irrelevent if he really, really wanted to make a sequel. which apparently, and unfortunately, he did. :p

I thought House was a pretty good throwback to the old horror films that used to play at drive-ins back in the day. This one seems to take it to the next level and nix the monster movie mode of House. While I loved the visual style and sets employed by Zombie in House, they really seemed out of the blue when they popped up at the end.
My only question is: how do Danny Trejo and the other guys in the pic with the family figure into the movie? They aren't relatives are they? Also, a big  to Zombie for getting the guy from Hills Have Eyes to make an appearance, he is like icing on the cake for this kind of movie.

EDIT: after visiting the site and seeing the RIP Jimmy clip, I am convinced that Rob Zombie might very well have made the most balls to the wall movie in several years, and the was from just one clip!
Spoiler:
I was shocked not only at the violence, but the fact that they had a girl totally nude in the clip. Very old school and raw approach by Rob.

I was shocked as well upon viewing that clip and I totally agree that it was an

I enjoyed the first movie and will probably see the sequel.
Can anyone explain to me what all those weird creatures and things were underground (towards the end of the movie). That's something we were a bit confused about while viewing it.

The Devil's Rejects can't come out soon enough. I have complete faith in Rob Zombie, so this along with Land of the Dead are my most anticipated theatrical films to come out in a long time.

Terrell 06-06-05 11:36 PM

I wonder how Hollywood allows Rob Zombie to ever make a film, or why they distribute it. The guy is the worst ever. In fact, he should never get within a hundred feet of a film camera. I saw House on cable, watched it for 10 minutes. The absolute worst 10 minutes of any film I've ever seen. That's not an exxageration.

Yeah, I know! I'll shutup and move along.

Matthew Chmiel 06-06-05 11:48 PM

I've never seen House of 1000 Corpses, but I do have passes to see The Devil's Rejects when it plays CineVegas next week.

Meaning that I should rent House of 1000 Corpses sometime this week. :)

Troy Stiffler 06-07-05 12:58 AM

I'm still eager to see this. Will see it opening night.

I saw Rob on MTV's Cribs the other day. Not that I watch it much. Is it getting hot in here, heh'? Anyways, it's good too see a filmmaker that's actually a big film buff. He's definately apt to oddball, ballsy horror.

steebo777 06-07-05 10:46 AM

Saw this about a month ago and was pretty impressed. The score is outstanding (nice southern classic rock) and there are some pretty raunchy scenes. Luckily the choppy camera work and quick editing is gone. It was much better than I anticipated but House of 1000 Corpses really disappointed me, so I didn't hold out much for this. Ken Foree owns in it.

Matthew Chmiel 06-18-05 02:42 AM

I just saw the "premiere" of this film at CineVegas with Rob Zombie, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Nicolas Cage in attendence. Why Nick Cage was there, I don't know, but it sure surprised a lot of us. So it was a few hundred horror film fanatics and three celebrities (with friends and family). And on that note...

I would just like to come out and say that House of 1000 Corpses was a piece of shit, however, The Devil's Rejects is one of the better horror efforts released so far this year. What made it even more enjoyable viewing was seeing it with a crowd who knew what they were getting into. The audience cheered, screamed, laughed, and applauded during the film's entire 100 minute run time and it made the film a lot more fun to watch. I don't think I would see the film again in theaters, but I'll be sure to pick up the DVD.

It's definitely one to catch at the end of July.

Spoiler:
And during the Q&A that followed the film, Rob Zombie said that some of the deleted footage may be on the DVD. The specific "deleted footage" mentioned involved a scene with Dr. Satan and Rosario Dawson.

Just letting anyone interested know, tonight, Wednesday July 6, Spike TV will will play the first ten minutes of The Devil's Reject's. I'm not sure if it is before, during, or after the movie they have playing, Silence of the Lambs.

Here's a great closing paragraph from Ebert's 3-star review here:

OK, now, listen up, people. I don't want to get any e-mail messages from readers complaining that I gave the movie three stars, and so they went to it expecting to have a good time, and it was the sickest and most disgusting movie they've ever seen. My review has accurately described the movie and explained why some of you might appreciate it and most of you will not, and if you decide to go, please don't claim you were uninformed.

As a horror fan who also thought House of 1000 Corpses was a piece of shit, this is the most encouraging thing I've read yet about this movie.

Dr. DVD 07-22-05 11:21 AM

I am really surprised to find most of the reviews for this to be positive, at least the ones I have read. Seems Zombie has a bit of a filmmaker in him afterall.

I didn't find CORPSES to be "shit," as it had too much potential to be a total wipeout, but REJECTS is a huge improvement.

One of the better pictures I've seen this year.

I've still seen varying reviews. NY Times gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars. Eberts review has been discussed. In the Phoenix paper, the reviewer gave it 1.5 out of 5 stars.

I dunno. I think NY Times and Ebert are a bit more credible than a local critic. :)

Julie Walker 07-22-05 12:59 PM

Our local critic Chris Hewit gave the film 3 1/2 out of 4 stars much to my surprise!

He usually gives the majority of horror films that are on the more grim side a bad review. For example he gave High Tension 0 stars for being a 'cruel disgusting mean spirited' film. Yet from what I have heard/read,Rejects is far more cruel and sadistic, lol.

He did rave about Zombies filmmaking skills this time around, and said it was a huge improvement from Corpses(which he gave either 1 or 0 stars at the time).

Anyway I will be seeing a midnight showing of this tomorrow night after work and can not wait:D

Of course. I'm just saying that I'm surprised to see good and bad reviews for this. Usually flicks like this get all bad reviews.

Judging Ebert by his reviews over the last 2 years, that is highly questionable.

Which is why I won't see Devil's Reject. Zombie is just horrid. He's not even a filmmaker, nor does he know anything about it judging from House of 1000 Corpses. The problem with horror is we've replaced master horror filmmakers like Carpenter with people like Zombie who thinks throwing a bunch of gore and disturbing images on the screen makes for a great horror film. I'd like to see some talented new horror directors churn out more films on the level of Halloween, The Thing, and even The Fog. Throw Nightmare On Elm Street and The Exorcist in there as well. That's what will help the horror genre in my opinion, not Zombie.

Sorry for the rant. I love the horror genre done right.

Zodiac_Speaking 07-22-05 01:42 PM

I'm stoked for seeing this tonight. Ken Foree,Steve Railsback, P.J. Soles, and Micheal Berryman-any movie that has these cult icons is worth a see. Plus, review-wise, this is the horror film I've been waiting for.

Dawg 07-22-05 02:15 PM

Just caught the film this morning and was pleasantly surprised. A MAJOR step up from House of 1000 Corpses. It flowed really well and never lost my attention. This really didn't feel anything like a horror film to me. More just like a brutal action pic. Also, it may just be me but I didn't really find the film as gory and depraved as everyone has been saying. If anything it could have been a little more sadistic. Terror was always alleviated by light-heartedness.

Overall, I highly recommend it. :)

Did not really care for House (even fast forward thru most of the end), but this one has gotten my interest. I even picked up the soundtrack on a whim and very much enjoyed it and liked what I heard for the most part on the dialogue bits. Thinking about checking it out this weekend, which considering I very rarely go to the theater is saying a lot.

Exactly the way I viewed the movie.

cactusoly 07-22-05 10:22 PM

I'd recommend to anyone who hasn't seen House of 1000 Corpses to wait. Devil's Rejects is a much better film and works well on its own. Then watch House afterwards for the back story.
