I agree with you and all, but the simple fact that you used "LOL" in a phrase showing how nerdy the others were...

Just having to sit through the trailer I could tell it was going to tank. Hell, I thought it made the older version look better.

so can we say comic book movies have run their course? I hope so..though I want my Man Thing to come out first.

"Forget it, donnyScot, you're out of your element!"

The punisher has cost Lions Gate 33 million to make. It currently has in it's second weekend $19,793,000 made. That is well above what it needs to fully make up it's budget by the months end at the very latest. The Punisher will make a profit for Lions Gate and Lions Gate has already expressed a big interest to make a sequel. Hellboy will have a sequel even though it is the biggest bomb of movie history as Groucho would back up. Comic book movies have not run there course. Spiderman 2 will break the bank, Spiderman 3 will be in the works. Man thing will come out and THAT will bomb because it has even worse public knowledge then hellboy did. X-men will get it's treatment in a third and so on. Comic book films are FAR from running their course.

the punisher really needs a sequel. Any real fan of the character can tell just by watching the first film that a sequel NEEDS to be made... the character is established... now its time to add some twists, some new meaningful characters (hello micro) and sit back and watch frank deal out some justice. Thats the appeal of the Punisher... so long as our "justice" system remains fawked up and stupid, people will want to live vicariously through guys like the Punisher... no insanity defenses... no cases thrown out on technicalities, no search warrants required, and no mercy when it comes to the violent scum of the world.

The Punisher rocks.

I don't really have anything to add on the future of comic-based films, or even the possibility of a sequel to The Punisher, but I do want to correct a couple of Jack's points here.

First, Lions Gate has invested over $50 million, not $33 million, in the film. The advertising costs are (currently) at $20 million. And second, even if the film were to make $60 million at the box office, that would still not represent a profit for the distributor. Remember, they do not see every dollar of box office revenue. Theater owners get their cut as well. Some say that the basic rule of thumb for profitability of a film is to take the combined production and marketing costs and double them. That is how much a movie really needs to make to be considered profitable. But, even if the ratio is lower, say cost + 50%, The Punisher would need to gross $80 million (which seems somewhat unlikely at this point) just to break even.

The bottom line is that whatever else may or may not happen, this film will probably not be profitable.

Are you even factoring in international take and DVD sales? DVD sales have helped films show a huge profit even if there box office takes was poor.

For the most part Marketing cost aren't generally factored in when doing the numbers on the fly. You check out the budget of the film and then how much it made (in this case, the punisher opened to close to half it's budget. Good enough start for opening weekend) Sure if you want to get technical and add them in for the general idea, but I did a rough number for only fridays take and the upto the day amount it has pulled in. You have to also factor in how much a typical Lions Gate film makes. It's rather small in the food chain of studios and there films don't usually break past the 10 million mark for an opening.

Lions Gate already made it public that they are interested in a sequel if they follow the same steps this one followed. A good small and selective marketing budget and a small production budget. Scot has bashed every film that hasn't opened up with a $30+ figure and stayed that way the following weekend. Then to claim that comic book films have past there time is silly. It's clear they haven't as they still draw the public in and new titles are picked up for production.

The Punisher is no HULK where it bombed terribly compared to what Universal was expecting. The Punisher has pulled in enough, and is forecasted to pull in enough for lions gate that they want another. Clearly it didn't bomb.

Truth be told Punisher will probably break about even if not make a slight profit at the BO but I can hardly imagine Lions Gate wanting to rush a sequel into production. Because after all the prduction costs, marketing costs, costs to put it on DVD, etc. Was the profit really that great? Nope. But even though I hated the first I'd probably still see the sequel. Actually, I'd probably wait for the sequel to hit DVD or the cheap theaters if it does get done.

Honestly the profit will be that great. Sure, domestic BO will only be around 50 mil tops. But let's put it this way...14 million at the box office...Lion's Gates biggest opening weekend EVER. Now, since they've never even reached that number before, you really think they're that disapointed it didn't double that?

And yes, the ancillary markets will fuel the profit on this film. 50 million domestic, match that on international, match that on DVD...this film could rake in 150 million to 200 million dollars revenue, on a 50 million total investment.

But here's the Hollywood logic: If you domestic box office grosses surpasses your production budget, you're doing ok. Not blockbuster, but nonetheless successful. This...will have no problem doing that.
