Never knew anything about Hellboy but now I'm a fan...
|
i am a huge comic book movie fan and i only thought Hellboy was pretty good, not mindblowing like when i saw X2
I must admit i have never read a Hellboy comic and i think they affected how much i could enjoy the movie Were some cool FX and cool action sequences but overall i found it a tad bland |
I am going to spend Easter seeing it a second time. I really liked the movie and cant wait for the uncut DVD. The audience in my theatre last week was all into it, clapping, laughing, etc. I wonder if it will be the same tomorrow.
Also I just ordered my 12" Kroenen figure... http://www.sideshowtoy.com/mas_asset...03_image01.jpg Anyone else getting figs or replicas? |
I got in on the Samaritan replica pre-order before sideshow sold out on it. So I'm happy.
|
Aside from the regular Mezco figures, I also got their 18" Hellboy. Good stuff.
The Samaritan was awesome, but I couldn't imagine owning one. |
Never read the comics, but I thought this was a great film. There was enough balance between action and dialogue and the CGI looked really good. Not once was I taken out of the film. Thank you Rick Baker!!! Any film that starts out with Nazis and a both a Tom Waits tune and a Nick Cave cover signals a good film to me! :)

It thought it was quite good. I'd give it ***1/2 out of *****. I have never read the Dark Horse comic, though I have been aware of it for years. I thought they did a great job of setting up the story and executing it. It would have been even better if it had not dragged on during a few moments.

I enjoyed alot of the movie but my brother described it best to me before I saw it, but he didnt like it, he said, Dude, he just fights dogs!

An update from the man himself:
Hi guys!! We are in our 3rd weekend at the Box Office and we are holding real well. We opened in several Asian territories and all box office reports are excellent. I am meeting this week with Sony to firm up teh release dates evereywhere else. We are in talks with Gonzo Anime for the HELLBOY anime series and we are shopping for the best possible videogame publishers -Spyda you are a genius- and possible engines. Mike Mignola and I will be involved inthe plotting of it to make sure that in flows with the mythology of the movie (s) anime, comic, etc, etc Mezco Toys is prepping a SECOND WAVE Hellboy Toys. I know that they're planning a bitchin' NAZI KROENEN and a full-blown PRINCE OF DARKNESS HELLBOY standing over the city rubble. I would like to propose this... Make a poll as to your favorite action figure and I PROMISE I'll fight to get it made in the *" version, how is that??? And, yes, we are talking about a second movie. The B.O. numbers make perfect sense since we were a relatrively "inexpensive" movie at under $70 million and we will make enough domestically. Mike and I are fleshing out ideas and storylines we've been discussing for some time now. Mike thinks there will be no Lobster -sob- but Roger is in for sure. Some of the plotting will have hints of ALMOST COLOSSUS and C. WORM... These days I am finishing MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and will turn it in to Dreamworks in about a week or so... I miss you guys and would love to stay in touch. My "Abe" adress at hotmail is swamped and I haven't had a single moment to adress all letters, but I've read them all. Keep 'em coming. I love to hear from you even if I cannot answer timely... Yours in Heck G del Toro |
Just saw it and I liked it a lot. .
One thing I really dug was how the Jokes and gags actually worked in this movie and they made me laugh. Many movies try to be funny and miss the target. I also liked all of the characters especially: Kroenen...  That Blonde Nazi bitch... I'd hit it.  John Hurt... |
Ok - better late than never - just saw this yesterday, and thought it was TERRIFIC! Solid dialogue, great performances, and a visual style that evokes the same feeling that I felt reading comic books as a kid. Can't ask for more than that!
|
I saw this last week (got drug by a friend) and didn't really care for it.
The characters were lame, the fights weren't exciting, and none of the jokes made me laugh. Just not my cup of tea I guess. |
How the hell did this movie get released with only 9/10ths of a script? Can someone please explain this to me? Huh? Please?
Such a great opening origin scene, so much "pulpy" atmosphere, such delicious scenery chewing by Perlman, such great characters squandered with nothing for them to do. Answer me these (as I haven't read the only 9,000 posts on the subject): (1) What the hell happened to Abe Sapien for the climactic battle? Why did he not join the rest of the team? His character was just unceremoniously dropped 2/3rds of the way through the movie? WTF? (2) What the hell was that ending? Rasputin sucks out "Sparky's" soul. The "Boy Scout" indicates that she has no pulse. "HB" mutters something that was inaudiable and suddenly - wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am - "Sparky's" up and snogging "HB." What the 'eff did I miss? So much promise for so much fizzle. God, what a train wreck. Still, it'll be head-and-shoulders above the "Spiderman" sequel whose cartoon trailer we all got subjected to. Yikes. Did the FX guys get the memo that its "Spiderman" and NOT "Plasticman?" I guess the biggest issue with the original film simply wasn't addressed in the sequel: namely the cheap CGI. I've said it before and I'll say it again. This looks to be the worst summer on record in terms of "blockbuster" films. [Jar-Jar] Pee-eew-sa! [/Jar-Jar] |
Come on grunter, Seeing red without a shirt must have atleast been a highlight for you.. ;)
|
Jack, you know me.
No belly, no love. ;) |
I finally got around to seeing this today. I didn't follow the comic at all, but I enjoyed the film. Above average comic flick. One problem I had though and I noticed someone addressed it previously, but I didn't really see an answer.

Finally got a chance to check this out on Tuesday and I gotta say it was fun. There were only a handful of people in the theater (12:30 matinee) but everyone was laughing in all the right places and they seemed to have fun. Definately worth the price of admission.

I don't recall seeing this mentioned in this thread yet, but if it was, please disregard. When John was being shown around the BRPD for the first time, the baby in a jar from The Devil's Backbone was among the items in the background.

Well, I just watched this on DVD. I was very underwhelmed.
I agree with many of the detractors here. Even though there was plenty of action I felt bored and impatient. I didn't care about any of the characters and was often lost in the plot. Hell, you don't even know what the villain's goal is until the last 10 minutes of the film, let alone his plan. I know the new FBI character was meant to be an mechanism for the audience to catch up to the story, but I still felt out of the loop. It almost had a Men in Black feel, but not done nearly as well (and not just because the actor lacked Will Smith's charisma). We barely get a glimpse of Hellboy's activities before the major storyline begins and we get almost no insight into Hellboy and Liz's relationship. A (monotonous) montage of Weekly World News headlines doesn't cut it. It's not clear what exactly Hellboy and Liz's relationship even is at the start of the movie. It's painfully obvious that he cares for her, but you don't know if he's told her or she's rejected him or they were together and then separated. Blair's dead performance doesn't help matters. You aren't given any sense of how the organization works, or what exactly it is they do. It would have been nice to see Hellboy on a mission that wasn't part of the confusing and prolonged main plot. The sad part is they could have easily trimmed the hell hound segments (and the overlong opening) down to fit something like that in. And it probably would have given the audience a much better connection with the characters then the overdone 'character development' sections of the movie. And the plot (once you 'figure it out') is just non-sense. The villains motivations are so stereotypical and generic they don't even bother explaining them. Their actions aren't explained either or even logical. Spoiler:
And finally, the ending was completely unsatisfactory on every level. The 'god' monster wasn't anything new (either in terms of cinema or even within the movie itself), and the resolution with Liz was both dumb and emotionally dead. |
I understand all of the gripes that people had with this movie and still thought it was entertaining. I loved how the character of Hellboy tried to fit in. Gave the character a tragic charm.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. Even though the movie didn't make that much, I'm glad there's a sequel coming. |
Just watched this DVD tonight. Stinker. Had the Tomb Raider vibe. Actually, this reminded me of Xmen (take your pick of which one)... just kind of THERE. I try over and over to get into movies like this and more often than not I feel like I just wasted an evening.

I got my DVD signed by Guillermo, along with my copy of The Devil's Backbone. So that's cool.
