Just yesterday I picked up all the 8" figures (except I still need the Hellboy w/corpse figure), and the Mez-its. I also got the regular 18" Hellboy, without horns, but with coat.
As for my comment about The Hulk, let me stress that Hellboy is nothing like The Hulk, I just happened to think The Hulk was a very high quality film. I tried to also compare it to other superhero films (i.e. I liked it as much as Spider-Man and more than both X-Men movies), but people just seem to focus on The Hulk thing. |
I liked the Hulk, but X2 and Spider-Man were superior IMO ... and Hellboy was easily on par with those two (if not better). I was sort of worried that my praise of the film was filtered through comic fanboy lenses, but my brother assured me that the movie was damn enjoyable, even to a neophyte.

The first 3/4 of the movie was really good.

I'd give this movie a B- |
exactly how old is actor Rupert Evans in some shots of him in the trailer and a still pic in today's Style section of the Washington Post, he looks like he is 15 years old.

All in all Hellboy is a bitter disappointment
The direction and story is a mess. Even at an exasperating 132 minutes, the story faults in too many plot holes and lost character exposition, buried amongst repetitious ear assaulting monster fights. Del Toro and his screenwriters can’t see the forest amongst the trees to bring Hellboy any surprises or flair to a rather typical good monster battling evil scenario. Perlman is adequately cast as Hellboy, as well as John Hurt, but the rest of cast is terminally lost and upstaged by CGI monsters and poorly executed fight scenes (Del Toro did a much better job at this for Blade II). This movie panders to the 14 year old almost exclusively, and ultimately fails for any one older looking for a fantasy action pic with more depth. |
A co-worker of mine saw a preview screening last night and he said 2 boys beside him fell asleep, as well as the guy who invited him to come. He said there was too much talking and not enough action. *shrug*
I'll probably still see it, but not as soon as I'd planned to before. |

It is doing well at rottentomatoes.com. As of now it is 76%: Fresh: 59 Rotten: 19
Still not sure if I will see it in theaters; which ain't saying anything since I have only seen one film there this year. |
I was disappointed with Hellyboy.
I'm not a fan of the comic, but I found the premise to be interesting nonetheless. So, going in with a relatively open mind, I left, as I said, pretty disappointed. A couple things I find odd--some of which are complaints, some are just random thoughts. In the opening narration, Professor Bruttenholm says that the following events "Not only changed the course of history, but altered his life forever," or something to that effect. Shouldn't it be the other way around? The fights were redudant. How many times does Hellboy really have to fight the tentacled creature? Geesh. And then, on top of that... Spoiler:
I thought there should have been more Abe Sapien. I thought there should have been a bit more of the Nazi assasin (I don't remember his name, but I still thought he was the coolest character in the film). I thought there should have been a whole lot loss of Dr. Tom Manning, the FBI head. Was I the only one that found this character to be extremely annoying? I was just waiting for Hellboy to crush his skull or something. Alas. The love-triangle also fell flat for me. Complaints aside, though, I thought it was decent. The wisecracks were pretty funny. In comparison to other comic book adaptions, I'd place this above The Hulk and Daredevil, but below Spider-Man and both X-Men movies. |

Originally posted by Corvin I figured that was so, but it didn't make the fight any less redundant for me. I saw two sneak previews and seeing it again tonight (maybe twice in a row). |
hellboy might be a fanboy movie only. i was lost. really really ****ing lost. very confusing flick, with a lot of mumbo jumbo that seemed interesting, but came off as silly and confusing in the film. I do want to read the comic though. Pearlman kicked ass, but hellboy's sly humor started to dry out a bit. The movie strangly went from being very serious, to silly and then to soap oprahish. I was honestly bored by it, though that villian in the gas mask was great. Also, the sets, the props, everything in the movie reeked of being too animated. It reminded me of a teenage mutant ninja turtle film. plus the special effects were very lame in many scenes. this film was NOT made in the same time period as when the LOTR films were made. In terms of fight scenes, special effects, costumes, props, del toron did far better handling blade 2, one of my favorite action films of all time.

I remember Ebert asking "Why are people bothering to fight people who can't die?" and Sammiel reminded me of this. Personally, I like the fights in Pirates and Hellboy. This movie owned! I had loads of fun and might go see it again this weekend. I hope it gets #1!!!
Kroenen was one scary lookin mutha who ruled all! |
I've never read the comic book and have only a passing awareness of the premise of the source material, so I went in pretty fresh. But I found the movie uniteresting. Not bad, per se, it just failed to engage me at any level...even on that momentary visceral thrill level that even schlock like Torque can reach.
I followed the story and even was able to make the leaps in logic that the film required, but I didn't find myself cheering for Hellboy because I made any connection with the character, only because the only other choice is the Nazi bent on world domination. I found myself thinking the worse thing you can think while watching a movie at the theater....how long has the movie been on, shouldn't it be over by now? Again, not bad, just...eh. Del Toro has shown himself as a director who can create new worlds and looks....so why did this movie look like it took place in the same city as Blade II. I half expected to see Blade chasing some reapers in the tunnels with his case of timed explosives. |
This movie Was SOOOOOOOOOO LONG. I felt like I was watching the Extended version of this movie. The editing ruin this movie for me. Rental or C-

This is probably the worst comic book movie out there. I mean DareDevil was pretty bad, but at least it was somewhat watchable. I could sit through it. I wanted to leave the theater so badly this time! That's a pretty rare feeling. Definitely one of the worst movies that I've ever seen in the theaters.
I'm going to guess that this is a fanboy movie. I had no idea what was happening half of the time or how they did some stuff or why some things happened. I give Hellboy an F-. |
I was nodding off, guy next to me was snoring, in other words I was bored as hell. Amazing considering just how much action is in the movie, D+ at best.
|
wow, a lot of nay sayers even though it's getting good reviews.
|
Wow, I am surprised. Alot if not most of the ppl in the theatre here were laughing, cheering, and even a few claps during some good scenes. I think I will go see it again just for fun. I cant wait for the SE dvd later this year.

Never read the comics...but I LOVED the movie. Hellboy ****ing rocked. The character himself is great...flaws and all. The effects were pretty damn good at points and overall I thought the pacing was fine... sure, the Russia bit gets a little long, but still not enough to destroy the movie.
My only complaint is that Abe Sapien kicked so much ass and was really underused.... he totally should have been along for the ride in the last half.... In closing, I thought Hellboy was a great time at the movies, I'm gonna go see it again, and hopefully it does well enough for a Hellboy 2 sometime in the future. MATT p.s. the friend I saw it with wasn't impressed at all.... different strokes. |
Did it jump parts at all in the film?
