:jawdrop:

The East shows its rich visual history and art again in cinema...but is the story worthwhile? Anyone aware of this film? I don't visit AICN much anymore, they talking about it there?

Giantrobo 03-24-04 02:00 AM

That was amazing

I would love to see it.

Geezus! There are some kick ass artsy fartsy movies coming out over there. Did you see the GOD + DIVA trailer? It looks like Stargate on ACID.

I added this page to my Favorites. All you have to do it mouse over the link and at the bottom of IE it shows what it says in English.

outcastja 03-24-04 02:24 AM

harosa 03-24-04 05:49 AM

and God+Diva isnt an asian film.

Trigger 03-24-04 06:03 AM

yeah it is... isn't it? It's from a Japanese film company and is being released in Japan. The trailer looks like it has caucasian actors in it, but it was so short I couldn't tell much about it. Looks really cool though - http://www.god-diva.jp/#

harosa 03-24-04 08:15 AM

Its originally titled IMMORTEL, its a french film based on some french comic, looks like Fifth Element and Stargate had a baby. http://immortel-lefilm.com/ for the official site.

Trigger 03-24-04 09:31 AM

Well that explains the anglos...

Jepthah 03-24-04 11:36 AM

So it seems the craze in Japan are live action adaptations of their anime.

That's what Casshern is too, to a degree:

I wouldn't say it is a "craze". They have been doing it for a long time. Craze implies "fad", atleast to me.

Of course you could just say that they are into making live action adaptations of their manga, since a fair number of anime titles began as manga. Films like the Tomie series and Uzumaki were manga originally too.

devilshalo 03-24-04 11:43 AM

-eek-

Now if they could do a kick ass Kikaida movie...
I was a little disappointed with Hakaider: Mechanical Violator, it had so much potential with my all time favorite Kikaida nemesis.

I know it's been done in the past, but I think now with the advances in digital filmmaking the activity is just exploding. I mean, Casshern made for $6 freakin' million?! -eek-

What are we doing wrong over here?!! ;)

Our comic books aren't nearly as interesting or good (IMO) here, so that screws up our comic book movies. Though, Hellboy looks promising and there have been others in the past (Ghost World, Batman, etc.).

Tarantino 03-24-04 12:33 PM

I believe he meant in regards to the budgeting...Casshern made for 6 mil, in comparison to our flicks that look like that ringing in at like 150 mil.

Yeah you are right, my bad.

harosa 03-24-04 12:58 PM

I'll judge it all when the movie hits, all the money shots could be in the trailer, and quick cuts isnt the best way to judge f/x.

Tell me I don't have to download RealPlayer to watch the God*Diva trailer...

Please, please, please....

beefjerky 03-24-04 02:49 PM

I knew that the visual style for this movie looked familiar, but I couldn't place my finger on it. Turns out it's directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, who did some of Hikaru Utada's videos (and is also her husband).

ArchibaldTuttle 03-24-04 03:45 PM

I never heard of this movie immortel, looks cool

rexinnih 03-24-04 05:02 PM

First time I've heard of this but that trailer kicks some serious butt!
Bummer is that it starts Golden Week (late April) and I'm leaving Japan April 1st. Oh well, I'll wait for the expensive DVD to come out and enjoy it at home.

PopcornTreeCt 03-24-04 08:36 PM

Stuff looks kewl. It looks like their comic book movies are actually good. :)

KenobiKid22 03-24-04 11:53 PM

Here's a link with more info on the anime series it's based on. I dug this up from the official sites message board.

If this doesn't get picked up for a US release, it'll definitely be time to get a region free player.

Damn, but that is cool!

It was made for 6 million YEN, which equals about $40 million in US money.

You kiddin'? This movie costs around 700 BILLION Yen.

Plain and simple, most Hollywood films are very bloated, excessive production values. And they rarely show up in the final product.

Umm... 6 million yen is $56,364.40 in US dollars.

Trigger 04-10-04 05:26 AM

my guess would be that this film cost about a billion yen.

mytzplyx 05-15-04 11:46 AM

I'll be going to watch this next weekend and I was wondering if any of the DVDtalkers living here in Japan have seen it yet?

All the reviews I've read about it say that it remains true to the manga storyline and that there's a good level of character/plot development mixed in with the action.

Would be nice to know if some of you had good opinions of this movie before I drop my 1800 yen ($16.50 U.S.) on a movie ticket. This should be my fourth movie in 2 years here in Japan. Haha.

Fincher Fan 05-16-04 10:41 PM

If that trailer can't make you part with $16.50 I don't know what can! Let us know how it is.

The only thing that can make me part with $16.50 is the good possibility of getting action after the movie from the person I bought an extra ticket for.

Hmm, the only movies I watched in theater here are LOTR: TT, Matrix Reloaded, and Harry Potter Chamber of Crap (<--peer pressured by a girl). I figure if this movie is at least better than HP, then I'll consider it a decent expense.

I'll definitely post a review of it if I make it there.
