USA 20 August 2004 (limited)

However, I think this trailer has REALLY caught on..

Audiably speaking, at least nights Kill Bill showing.

when they said "from the producers of crouching tiger", someone said out loud "no shit" i wonder if tarantino and miramax will simplify the subs, and put the opening and ending in english.

the colors looked washed out where I saw it tonight - I hope it was just the trailer. I remember it being much more vibrant. The voiceover on the trailer for Hero was a bunch of nonsense... It didn't even sound like the same movie - and they gave away the ending.

This is the one you want, it's legit, it's Region 1, it's DTS...

I own a DVD of this, and the color in the theater I saw it in, originally, absolutely annihilated the color on that particular DVD. It was absolutely gorgeous.

That said, I saw it again, on a bigger screen, and the color wasn't quite as bold - so I guess it varies print to print.

This may indeed be the version you want (I hope so, I just ordered it from a different place), but it isn't really Region 1.

The site itself says:

Region: All Code, NTSC, Anamorphic Letterbox

And you might want to check out HKFLIX.com since they don't sell bootlegs. They have 3 versions of HERO on DVD, all out-of-print (at least legally in the U.S., thanks Disney)

HERO [2002] [CHINESE DD5.1 VERSION]
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

HERO [2002] [CHINESE DTS VERSION]
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

HERO [2002] [HK 2-DISC SET]
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

All are still 98 minutes

EDIT: HKFLIX reports the 2-disc set as a DVD, but asiandiscs.com has it as a VCD.

Yeah I made a type-o. I was thinking Region 0, but typed Region 1.

There's a site that compared the two. I think it said R2 had a sharper image, but R3 had better sound. I have the R3 and I'm perfectly happy wth it until I can find the director's cut.

I was underwhelmed by Crouching Tiger, as I posted in one of the Kill Bill threads. I felt the plot to be boring, the characters weren't fleshed out enough, and the fights became monotonous by the end. Granted, some of the fights were visually stunning, but not enough for me to enjoy the film as a whole.

Hero, on the other hand, not only put the visuals in Crouching Tiger to shame, but the plot, reminiscent of Kurosawa's Rashomon, held my interest the entire time. The characters and their relationships were also adequately explained that I felt connected to them. I keep calling this film, "The film Crouching Tiger should have been," and I mean it. If Crouching Tiger had been as well made as Hero, it would have deserved all the praise and money heaped on it.

Man was that a lousy Miramax trailer. Jet Li is the star? He's a hero who has to unite the nation? Uh, did anyone actually see this film?

Yeah, the trailer managed to misrepresent the film while also giving away the ending. I remember seeing a German trailer that had no dialogue at all. That's the trailer that made me know I had to see the film. I'm really glad I saw the film before I saw this American trailer.

Yeah, but it basically flat out says that
Spoiler:
Jet Li is there to kill the emperor
which we don't find out until the end. It was just badly done.

As i was watching the trailer I thought, man, is this the same movie I saw? A gross misrepresentation in showing Li as the total star, selling it as an action movie and they give away HUGE spoilers from the movie.

There are several sites that have compared the R2J and thr various R3-releases, and the general view has been that the R2J wins for both sound and picture ( DVD Debate and DVD Beaver ). The extended cut is afaik only legally available w/o English subtitles on EVD (Chinese hi-def non-compatible system).
Edited for spelling.
