Depp hasn't really had the reputation of being a "serious actor." He's taken a lot of work in silly supernatural thrillers (one opens today) and while he's been great almost consistently, he still gets the stigma of taking on the shitty roles.
Now with two stand-out performances in two films in a row, and an Oscar nomination and SAG award (quelle suprise!) he's finally getting the recognition he deserves.
