The Girl Next Door

Just got back from a sneak preview of this, I personally loved it. Pretty cool little movie that actually made you care about the characters involved, a nice change of pace from the typical high school movie.

And of course Elisha Cuthbert is amazingly hot in the movie . . .

They really can't win. If they go your way, some people will complain that it's another stupid teen movie with no plot. This way with a lot of plot, you complain that it isn't like other teen comedies with much simpler plots.

IMO, I think they dropped the ball. Wayyyy too much plot for what shoud've been a simple teen sex comedy. The last 30 minutes was like watching paint dry.
I'm sure you went into Chasing Amy too expecting a classic sex comedy, huh? A man falls in love with a lesbian. Some classic slapstick and crude gross out gags could be made with that one. Did you like the movie Boat Trip while we're at it?

The Girl Next Door, in my opinion, is so far the best film of 2004 (that will change soon, of course, it's only February). The film captures the spirit of The Last American Virgin. On the surface, the film might look like a normal teen sex comedy, but there's more to it than that.

Ever since American Pie, every teen film has been trying to push the limits in gross out boundries. The only ones that have worked since that film are the other two Pie films, Road Trip (people will disagree with me), and National Lampoon's Van Wilder (people will disagree with me this one too, but it's nice to note the same two guys who wrote that film also wrote this film). Eurotrip, which was just recently released, is also another good example of this (but that film doesn't supply too much on "gross-out" crude humor). When a film somehow decides to make a teen comedy with heart, the film gets a blacklash for not supplying the jokes and bringing in the drama.

Look at 100 Girls. A great film nobody saw (but most people who have seen it love it... then there are a few who hate it), but it's one of the best teen sex comedies I've ever seen. It takes a nice blend of comedy and (brief) drama and mixes them together. During that whole 90 minute film, I had a huge gigantic grin on my face (similar to Almost Famous). It doesn't rely too much on gross-out humor (but the language is pretty damn edgy) to get the point across. Now look at The Last American Virgin for the ultimate teen sex comedy that contains serious drama, and I know tons of people on this forum and the HTF who love that film.

There will be haters for this film. "Oh, it goes on too long. Too much plot on such a simple story." When the hell did we have a problem with plot? With most films getting released no containing zero plot, this is a sigh of relief. I personally loved the film, but that's just me. I'm silly like that (hell, I loved The Butterfly Effect and Camp which most other people seem to hate). I thought this film had heart and I felt for the characters during the film's two hours run time. And you know what? You can't say that about most of the shit released to theaters in the past few years.

The film is one big step up from the director of The Animal and the writers of National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

I saw it tonight. man, the first 40 minutes were a hoot, but then it became TERRIBLE. What the hell were people thinking?! I didnt care about the stupid producer and his shit. I didn't want a mushy damn romance. I wanted the teen sex comedy they promised me!

I thought the hirsh kid was great, and elisha is so freaking hot its unbelievable. Infact she is the only reason i saw this film. SO it started off enjoyable. Funny, real sexy. Really was digging it. THen they seemed to forget all about elisha, all about having fun, and pounded us with sub plot after sub plot about shit no one could care less about it. ANd it went on. and on and on and on and on. I just wanted out of there. Shit, and i thought ROTK had multiple endings...

Why cant teen sex comedies be simple? WHy must they always pack so much plot into the film needlessly. THis movie was such a dissapointment. More i see movies like this, more i realize just how fantastic the american pie series were.

Standing ovation after his speech? people started cracking up and saying "what the fu**" when that happened. just so lame, and corny and stupid.

I dont know where this went wrong, but its like the director wanted to make a different movie halfway through shooting it.

What a mess. some good scenes, some nice laughs, and elisha is my #1 crush, but this is just shit.

AHHHH I SO WANTED TO THIS BE GOOD!

by the way, it aint that sexy either. Elisha Cuthbert reading a phone book wearing a wooden barrel would be hot, so this movie does have some nice scenes, but overall its rather tame.

Wow.

So much for a respectful sharing of thoughts and ideas about this movie, huh Matthew?

Is it my imagination, or is this movie placing its marketing platform solely around the notion that Elisha Cuthbert is hot? While will not argue, they might need more than that to draw in men. I doubt having 24's dimwit blonde in a movie peforming sex acts is enough to fill a theater.

It might just be me, but judging by the trailer this appears to be nearly identical to Risky Business.

The film has a Risky Business vibe going, but I won't mention anything else without spoiling the film.

The film was delayed to April 9th to promote the film more. FOX/Regency is shocked by all the positive reviews the film is getting (from the public sneak preview, test screenings, critics' screenings, etc) and is giving the film an additional month of publicity, hoping to attract more of a crowd. Good thing as the film had little publicity to begin with.

That and work has already started on a "Special Uncut Edition" DVD with extras galore.

Ok,the first page lost me with some comments that seemed like posts or pages were deleted.

Since the people complaining about those who expected a standard sex comedy...were ahead of the first post where someone complained about just that. So I am lost. Was there more to this discussion than meets the eye?

Anyway nice to know it being compared to the likes of Risky Business & Last American Virgin. So I am more interested in seeing it now if it handles the drama aspect better than the overrated American Pie(yeesh!) which is about as forced as it can get.

Kind of surprised me that they were delaying this til April 9th, which is a BIG movie day. Let' see, The Alamo opens, the new The Rock movie Walking Tall opens, The Whole Ten Yards, and now The Girl Next Door. Jeez!

What were some other films that came out recently where they decided to release it 1 month later for more publicity. I recall this happened a few months ago to a movie I was excited to see and it turned out to be mediocre. I just can't remember which movie it was!

Hidalgo was bumped for the same reason. they were hoping for a december release and marketing pushed it till this weekend.

See this International trailer, hilarious and sells the movie better in my opinion. Dave's trailer page has a ton of clips also.

I agree with you harosa. Just that I don't think the MPAA would dig the line, "But you can still like her with your penis inside of her."

I wonder if FOX will be releasing any new television spots and trailers soon. FOX posted some clips from the film on their website, but they are highly edited versions than what was shown in the actual film.
