As for the mall being the only safe way, I disagree. They never thoroughly checked back the way Sarah Polley's character came from (after she totals her car). They know the road ahead is choked with zombies, but not necessarily the road back. Also, they give no justification as to why the mall would be any safer than going back.
Another thing I didn't like was how Rhame's brother was never mentioned again after they ask him to stay.
About the redhead getting a pass because she's hot, I can't get on board with that. To me, in a survival situation, smarts takes over looks anyday. You can even be stupid as long as you're not dangerously stupid. What she did for the dog put herself and eventually everyone in jeopardy.
And since someone brought up the music, I thought it was atrocious. Completely typical horror movie fare, complete with fake outs and stings. Poorly done.
Again, I must reiterate that even with all these complaints, I still enjoyed the film quite a bit.

Rhames brother was presumed dead. what else did you want them to mention about him?

I liked the movie a lot as a horror film. I disliked it as a member of the Romero Franchise(if you can count it as that).
I have to admit as well, i like my zombies slow moving falling apart pieces of flesh.
But some of the zombies in Re-Animator were somewhat quickmoving(But do most people consider Re-Animator a zombie flick, or a Frankenstein story like Gordon and Yuzna has refered to it as).

You can assume that it isn't a safe way to go through, especially without a car.

As for the brother, it was the main drive of Rhame's character. Then, after one scene, he never even mentions him again? I think this just indicative of the lack of character development all around.

I agree with you on that, but having the Johnny Cash song in the begining kicked so much a**.

I never considered the zombies in Re-Animator to be the focus of the story. The real story was the conflict between Herbert West and the older doctor. I think that film put int adequate reason for its zombies moving the way they did. And by the end

Enjoyed this a lot. Better IMO than 28 Days Later which I didn't like much at all. Course considering the differences in budget that might explain some things for me.
Missed the classic "Brainsssss" or chowing down on innards though. Coulda used more guts.
For a zombie movie for me: 8/10.

I played hookie from work to see it this afternoon and I have to tell you I really had a good time. I am a member of the slow zombie tribe, but I knew that it could still be a tense and fun flick if handled right. Certainly DOtD78 had this one beat in terms of character development, dialogue, score, and intellectual social comentary, but DOtD04 is a popcorn movie and doesn't pretend otherwise. The blood was spraying and the teeth were gnashing. As far as the music... besides the great opening Cash tune, Richard Cheese's version of Down with the Sickness was a great choice, but the rest was a predictably bland McSoundtrack™.
I give it four out of five brainsplattering headshots.

Well if you did leave before the side end story.. you sorta did miss something big as it leaves a big question mark on what exactly happens to the characters.

Hey, that scene towards the end when they're all in the elevator, CJ says "I like this song". I didn't catch what song was playing because there was bit of laughter from the crowd due to the previous scene. Any idea what song it was?

I saw it today and thought it was okay. A lot of it seemed very corny and formulaic, but it had enough shining moments to keep it fresh. I was disappointed in the amount of gore though. Many were hyping how gory it was, but there wasn't anything that really made me go "yuck".
Edit: One more thing. Was it just me or was there a couple seconds of the Paris Hilton sex video in the handheld camera footage during the credits? I could've sworn I saw two people going at it filmed in "nightvision" mode.

Roger Ebert's 3-Star Review (he gave the original a full 4 stars.
This quote from the review sums up my thoughts on the movie perfectly:
Good flick.
This quote from the review sums up my thoughts on the movie perfectly:
The contrast between this new version of "Dawn of the Dead" and the 1979 George Romero original is instructive in the ways that Hollywood has grown more skillful and less daring over the years. From a technical point of view, the new "Dawn" is slicker and more polished, and the acting is better, too. But it lacks the mordant humor of the Romero version, and although both films are mostly set inside a shopping mall, only Romero uses that as an occasion for satirical jabs at a consumer society.

oh and for the end credits, if you've watched the show the Shield, it runs kind of like that. I noticed that they changed the song at the begining. in the 8 min version that was played on usa network, the song was island in the sun by weezer, now its something else.
the only noticible cutting from the mpaa could have been

I noticed the song change at the beginning as well. Though the first 8 minutes shown on U.S.A seemed to be the same one that the folks at the comic con a month ago saw. This was before song copyrights were recieved.
Which is odd since in the test screening in feb they had the song on the radio that is in the final cut, but they replaced a jazz sounding "my heart will go on" with "don't worry, be happy" when they first get in the mall.
