Can anyone tell me anything about "The Dreamers"?
So, I got an email from Amazon today telling me that, since I purchased th NR version of Swimming Pool (even though I didn't buy it from them
), that they wanted to let me know about the NC-17 release of The Dreamers that is coming up. After reading up a little on it, it looked like a movie that I might enjoy, but I wanted to get some opinions from "people that I trust".
Does anyone have any opinions of this film that they'd like to share?
P.S. - If you need more information on my tastes in movies in order to make a recommendation, take your pick from the links in my sig.

Can I tell you anything about it? Yes, don't watch it with your mom.

The film is somewhat pretentious but I liked the setting of 1960s Paris and the use of old film clips. I liked that these characters were film geeks like me
What I did not like is the brother/sister relationship is not explored beyond the sexual. Also, the director did not include the homosexual themes from the novel.
talemyn I suggest that if possible, rent it first. Be sure to rent the NC-17 version and not the toned-down cut (most likely for Blockbuster).
I don't think it was "highly overrated" since the reviews were mixed. Overall, I would give it a "B-".

Would call it self-important before pretentious, the distinction being that Bertolucci doesn't appear to be talking down to the audience. Rather he is engulfed in his obsessions, distancing his characters' situations from the viewers. A more pretentious film might force the audience to relate and sympathize. In The Dreamers, our sympathies lie with the films, or the joy of consuming this art form (at least for me).
The film is stunning to watch, beautifully composed and poetic in its structure. It also has one of my favorite opening credit sequences this year.

It looks like this is a well made film technically, but is hit or miss on the content. I'm still intrigued . . . I may have to hunt it down and rent it (if I can find a place around here that carries the full version). Results are a little too mixed so far for a blind buy.

Same ol' Bertolluci bullshit. An overrated, pretentious mess of a film. Stupid characters. Terrible last third. Good soundtrack, though.

is an english version of "the dreamers" with Dicaprio coming soon?
when i saw ghost in the shell 2 today, i saw a prieview for "the dreamers" it was from the same director, and from all looks of it, leo decaprio was the lead. is this an old trailer, or is the director remaking it for an american audience?

Okay . . . time to dredge up my old thread to bring it to some closure. I ended up blind buying this last Fall after some significant debate (and the realization that I was never going to rent the "full version" in Charlotte) and just watched it yesterday (the upside to being sick and told to get rest by your doctor is that you have an excuse to watch movies all day long
).
I must say, this film has me torn . . . but in a good way.
There is so much that bothered me about this film, that made me uncomfortable, that I thought was sad/depressing, etc. . . . but at the same time, everytime I try to analyze each thing that got to me, I found that they really fit in with the rest of the movie and made it stronger. So, in the long run, I sort of grew to appreciate the things that bothered me.
It was also a beautifully made film with some very interesting special features on the DVD that I thought really added to the enjoyment of the film.
Anyway . . . just felt like I needed to bring my thread full-circle.

Curious to know when what part constitutes the "last third"? In other words, in terms of the story, at what point did you think it started to go South?
And don't say "the last third" . . .
