Saw it today. It wasn't perfect by any means but it is a very rewarding experience for cinephiles. I recognized virtually every clip except the 'girl rolling down the hill.'
On the positive side I'm glad it wasn't totally formulaic with a plot of excalating sexuality to shock the audience, though a case can be made for that. On the other hand I can't help but feel that the characters are acting as if they realize they're in a movie and some of their decisions/quirks are very contrived but cinematic. Don't know if that makes sense.
7/10
I hear Eva Green, who plays Isabelle has a part in Ridley Scott's new film, Kingdom of Heaven so it looks like she's headed for bigger and hopefully better.

As for the movie, quite enjoyable. I liked Michael Pitt a lot in Bully and he was good here. This movie probably has some of the most valuable end credits, listing the films referenced.
I agree that the movie is silly in its plot, but the exuberance of its execution more than makes up for it. There's quite a few beautiful moments here.
And I wonder why there wasn't a specific cross reference with Lolita. Eva Green pretty much mimics the first shot of Sue Lyon in Kubrick's film. Perhaps it was a rights issue.

I saw it yesterday. The projectionist ruined the film by misframing the movie by about 10%. Parts of subtitles were cut off. I will probably write a complaint to the the theater.
Anyway I like the Dreamers. It reminds me of Last Tango in Paris and Cinema Paradiso...

Well, guess I'm the only one (so far) who didn't like this film. In fact, none of the people I went with like it either. It just didn't do anything for me.

Ultimately, perhaps Bertollucci wanted to capture the spirit of political unrest of the late 1960's, but to do so with the 3 main characters (Matthew, Theo, Isabelle), none of whom capable of engaging the audience enough to garner any sort of empathy in their world views and plight, it was a strange, flaccid letdown by the time the credit roll.
Given its payoff, the film is just frustrating enough because there's some fun bits of the characters playing out scenes from classic cinema (interspliced with the real footage), and there's a sadness watching such immaturity on display while these 3 characters stumble around and possibly succumb to the opportunity of falling victim to even more cinematic "solutions" for the predicament they find themselves in as the climax of their days without parental supervision comes to a head.
Can't recommend it heartily (but Eva Green is one beautiful gal, she's brave to commit to this material).
I give it 2.5 stars or a grade of C+.

To me, Michael Pitt is a real ringer for Leo DiCaprio. His physical resemblance is eerie, and his acting style (even his voice) is even more eerie.
I thought it was a very fine film. Bertolucci's imagination and creativity were in top form. While not as urgently original as "Last Tango in Paris" and not as brilliant as "The Last Emperor" or "The Conformist," I still found "The Dreamers" to be one of his better films.
I have to agree with above poster regarding immaturity of the three main characters' behavior. And it did seem like their actions were coordinated to fit a script rather than emulate natural, real life. A lot of it was rather self-conscious.
Still, when you look around and see the product that's usually out there in theatres, a film like this should be commended for at least having the ambition and vision that is usually lacking in most standard cinemplex fare.
About the NC-17 rating....I can see why it was slapped with it. This film certainly earns its NC-17. Nudity was abundant and, in a couple of scenes, fairly explicit. One of the first times I've seen actual vagina lips in a non-porno.

Michael Pitt is the "wide-eye-deer-in-the-headlights" version of Leo DiCaprio. They could easily play brothers if the right film came along. Both have eerily the same body type too.
I think I have the serious HOT for Eva Green, though...

Actually, her entire bod is 2die4. Plus, she's got screen presence, her face is quite enticing. She'll be appearing in a Ridley Scott film next year, Kingdom of Heaven.
Love this shot from the film.
